Hi...just came across your channel while doing some research about possibly retiring early to Thailand. My wife and I are almost 50 years old (NJ residents) and ready for a big change. Like you, after weighing all of the options out there, Thailand offers so much in terms of scenery, flexibility and value for our money. Thank you for your videos. My Thai wife and I purchased property in Krabi, about 20 minutes from the beach. Ao Nang is too touristy, Can go for fun, but like Railay beach is the best. Beautiful beaches, Island close, and not as big and crazy as Phuket. We will be building soon, one year from now.

I've been working on them. That's a great tip for everyone, no matter where you're headed. Learn at least a few words, common greetings, and be about to do some basic counting. I taught myself greetings and counting on the 12 hour flight from Doha to Bangkok. It doesn't take long and it is VERY helpful.

Good video! I had the same thought as you for the choice of countries, and the same end result... ;-) As for your choice of locations in Thailand, Krebi is good, but you should also consider the region of Prachuap Khiri khan, the towns of Hua Hin and Cha-am. Super quiet region, central country, and with beautiful beaches. 2h from BKK. I am at the same stage as you, 2024 will also be my mouving year. Good luck in your research.

Thank you! Hua Hin is definitely on my radar. I've only seen a few videos on Prachuap Khiri Khan. I will be checking out new spots in September when I go for another visit and more once I move before I settle into a more fixed location.

@@b4bmm the nice beaches are in tué south Hua Hin. Not in the city. Type on YT, there is a selection. It's beaches for thais and not to crowded. Not tourist beaches

Michael! Sawadee kap! Yes! It's amazing that your journey, explorations, and ultimate choices/decisions have been similar to mine. Panama, Costa Rica, and Mexico were considered. I've traveled and lived extensively in Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Bali, India, and Cambodia. You are correct that Central America cannot compete with Asia (on many levels). And you helped me realize Bali's drawbacks (being small, albeit magical) and the Philippines; you're RIGHT! PI would be great...EXCEPT for all the island hopping required. GREAT points! I also really appreciate and am inspired by how methodological and practical your mind is - preparing to move. (and selling everything in the states etc.) Thanks, Michael, for paving the way and sharing your story. We aspire to follow in your footsteps. (and will give you a shout when we reach Pattaya and Jomtien!)

@@RetiringToAsia my wife's Thai, we live in Calif now but I'm retiring soon. Her daughter is with us now starting JC. So my kids are done and working so we're looking to retire there PT. Hua Hin is our second option. It has everything my wife wants lol and has my golf courses and beaches. More affordable the greater pattaya area. That's our #1. East and jomtiem area. We like entertainment options lol when I'm there, I always meet expats since there's so many. But good luck in finding your spot

Left the uk sold everything and came to hua Hin been here two years I've got no plans on leaving been visiting Thailand for 15yrs see alot of it the islands are expensive and over run with Europeans escaping the war south is nice but can get very humid so it wasn't for me I have friends in ao nang so I like to visit. Good luck and enjoy you trip. It's easy to move here there's nothing to worry about.

Hey another smart person retiring over to Asia where the money goes further. Im curious, I live in PA and thinking about retirement as well. Where will you forward your mail when you make the big decision to sell everything? Another question would be banking and smartphone? Everytime we need to access our banking institution it always need to send us a verification code to access our information. Don't know how most expats gain access to their banking everytime we have to login. Would Wifi just work? Good luck on your journey and look forward to you moving there.

All of those are things I've been researching and my plans are to make videos about getting all of that set up as part of my preparations and when I arrive so stay tuned! As far as a banking, I'll be opening a Thai bank account (mandatory for a retirement visa) and I'm already using Wise (see the link in the video description) so I can make transfers. I will keep a US bank account and simply transfer funds to my Thai account as needed. Phone seems to be very easy. Simple swap of the SIM card and you're up and running. Most bank verifications will allow the input of a different country code. You can also use a Google Voice or similar number. On the computer you can use a VPN and select a US location. Definitely several videos on all of those coming soon.
