The spike thingy is a fid used for rope-work, e.g. making splices or working knots. The groove at the butt end is for tying a lanyard that would be tied to your person so you could take it up in the rig and not lose it if you dropped it.

You're right duck. It's a splicing needle or spike. I used a pair of splicing needles on steel haulage rope down the pit, somthing I qas taught by a rope man when I was 17 back in 1977 .it actually served me well throughout my career working in the ripping, headings, and back rips, etc. Another dying skill. Have a wonderful New Year, duck.

Do yourself a favor and order a rear view camera for your bike! I did and it was a game changer! No pesky mirrors to deal with and you'll never be looking over your shoulder

Concretions like the ones with the coin and the thimble are often the result of 2 dissimilar metals in close proximity in an electrolyte such as brackish water or water with tannic acid content. Decaying vegetation such as is found in river bottom mud can produce tannins. Always check the concretion ('crud') for more inclusions. Nice Bike BTW. Happy New Year Si!

@@Sifinds -- Yep! Those things look amazing -- Northern Mudlarks got a pair and they work really well for them. I'd love to get one since regular biking is now difficult with my artrhitic knee, but they are expensive *AND* in my area they get stolen (with serious chains/locks even) often.... Hmmm -- I am remembering a way to wire up the ignition coil of an old (6V) VW Beetle so that when anyone touches any of the metal on the bike, they'd get a serious shock! Haha!!!

The spike is called a Marlin Spike, it's used to loosen rope from its moorings and for fancy knot work. The groove is for a line to keep it attached to the belt.

I love your bike.It’s the perfect thing for larking about London 😊. It certainly beats the days I cycled about England on my Raleigh Ladies Touring Bike ,no gears ,facing such challenges as an almighty steep hill alongside ( if memory serves me)Chesil beach. As my family andi go up along to the Thames regularly that plot where you went near the hotel could you answer: every time we look down onto the back of the beach bit there are hundreds of pipe stems, is there a particular reason, there is also piles of bones mixed in with the stones that i understand would be from the tanneries, thanks Si

Hi Kim. That is a very historic area, probably the busiest in centuries gone by. It was a Saxon dock too so has seen thousands of people coming and going. That area you talk about it actually off-limits, so the pipe stems shouldn’t really be taken because it’s scheduled land

Happy NY to you Si , Just watched this vlog , love the bike , great colour combo too ! In 2003 we moved from NZ to Cornwall , amongst our possessions that were packed was a beautiful clay pipe complete with a bearded head on the bowl , sadly the pipe was either taken by a packer or thrown out with paper etc when we unpacked at our new home , can you please advise where we may be able to purchase another ? We now live in Queensland , Australia . Cheers for any advice .

Si, be sure and always secure your e-bike well. In America they are currently the #1 item stolen because they are easily sellable due to demand. I use 2 uncuttable locks. Happy New Year 2024.

expensive e-bikes are being stolen while the owner is literally holding the bike Eg one guy was using an EFTPOS machine the bike was behind him he was holding it by a handlebar as he typed in his PIN another guy ran up behind grabbed the bike so quick he was gone riding down the street b4 the owner had a chance and never skimp on a lock ,what i do is take off the plastic guard behind the spockets and the moment a thief changes down gears for a speedy getaway the chain will seize behind the largest sprocket it takes many minutes to fix, i know not to put bike in that easiest gear so it doesnt effect me

Definitely leave the coin, but you need to put the whole thing in a container of Foreshore water. It needs to very slowly be allowed to acclimate to freshwater & then slowly reduce the moisture content. Otherwise it will all just break apart and crumble away. ❤lovely find! The round cut of the jewel or stone, is it a cabuchon. For a tie-stud. Am well-jel of your new wheels. That wooden peg looks like something you could use today
