I agree with the diversity concept for women of color. However, I want to see newer, fresh faces, not the same ones. I'm sick of seeing Beyonce and Rhianna and Lupita. I want to see various skin-tones, more representation of darker-skinned models of other races (South East Asia, India, Cuba, Polynesian etc) who have not been "white-washed" either. I want to see more Black models wearing their natural hair --which has been better lately--and not these very dark-skinned models with no hair or extremely androgynous features and looking masculine.

I remember reading that editors complained that newsstand sales drop when they put women of color on the cover. I know magazines make the bulk of their money from ads and subscriptions, not much from newsstand sales so I felt that was an excuse. If it is true that sales do drop, it’s very sad. This is why customers have to go out buy and support these covers. The good news is with so many fashion magazines featuring women of color during one of the magazines’ most important months- the Sept issue, it will be interesting to see what sales will be this year. I’m confident sales will be good 😊

Hey Karen! I did purchase the September and enjoyed the diversity on the cover and the article about Rhianna. However, I was disappointed in the content as I didn't relate to the articles. I wanted more fashion for the season change. I do love that the fashion community is showing many different women including older gals like me, Asian, Native and every type of people. This is an important step. As kids, we all loved to read about fashion if you loved clothes and makeup. Great video about your favorites. Loved it!

Hi Karen, I've been a subscriber for a bit and although our styles are completely different, I enjoy the fact that you are an import from Britain with Caribbean back ground, as so am I. I so enjoy your St. Lucia blogs. I have the oiliest skin allowed and never ever ever thought I could use a face oil; frankly the thought freaked me out. Well, when you spoke of Luna beginning at 13.06, I thought I would give it a try. I got it, applied it with trembling fingers for the first time 6 days ago and boy! you were spot on (pun intended). The thing instantly started to clear up 2 stubborn zits on my left cheek and has proceeded to smooth out my texture. I have also used Retin-A but let up on that so I can use Luna only. Thank you for being real and honest about products and please do not change on here. There are far too many disingenuous KZbinrs. Be blessed.

Fashion designers have realized how beautiful their unique creations look on elegant black women. Black women are showcases for vibrant colors. They make white look fantastic! Not to mention the neutrals. And I believe African women have been wearing the mixture of colorful-pattern-fabrics for years. Look at the model,and Nyakim Gatwech. She has said that a Uber driver told her she should bleach her skin. I taught at a Miami-Dade middle school where the majority population is still African American. I was amazed when we went to a Carol City High School pep rally (with a talented band and cheerleaders), to hear the girls remarking how "ugly" the cheerleaders were because they were too black. I told them that I thought they were beautiful. I am elated that the fashion industry is embracing dark skinned women. They truly are roll models for our young girls of all shades of color. And as a result, I believe, as a whole, we can all appreciate ourselves and eac other. (Look inside of "In Style" magazine. You will see a great mixture of ethnicity.)
@nicoleguise69366 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. It was a rarity to see brown and blackfaces on popular magazine covers. The truth is that we are all uniquely beautiful and should be celebrated. I hope that the fashion/beauty industry is catching up to what is real and are consistent. It truly matters, especially to young people as they grow and develop their sense of self. I enjoy your Channel. It is refreshing to interject the reality and error in Beauty and Fashion industry as it serves as a reminder as to what needs work!

I think it’s about time magazines recognized the diversity and embraces beauty in all forms. In fact, why stop at even colour, I’d like magazines embracing people of different abilities as well. Ever seen a model in a wheelchair? You know how empowering it would be to an entire segment of people aching to have inclusion. Although I’d tread carefully, like you said Karen..and not just believe that these magazines are genuinely invested unless I see them doing this as a long term thing. Love your videos as always! Btw, where did you get that beautiful coin necklace? I’ve been meaning to get something like that! I’m a sucker for these minimalist, elegant styles of jewellery

Karen, you have brought up a good point. Children do take in the underlying message when they only see people on the covers of magazines who look nothing like them. Adults do as well. The dominance of one race, age and/or body type being displayed/promoted on style, beauty, news anchors, actresses/actors, in shops, on runways, in the magazine shelf TIME & TIME again devalues all others. I hope this is not a one-off. I hope there is more diversity. As a petite woman of a certain age, I was told everything I could not do when I was young: You are too short to be a model...you are too short to be an airline hostess, girls are not allowed in little league (back in the 1950's/1960's) you are a woman so you will not do well in mathematics, science, architecture...you are too old to wear your hair long....you are too old...too short... I was always too something...sigh... SO I earned my Advanced Degree in Mathematics, I took to instagram on the other side of young, and I wear platforms (lol)

Given history, its hard to trust this wasn't a PR "one-up" moment for all of these magazines that have historically shunned us. I want to think September 2018 is the beginning of an epic love story for us and our glory, but its hard Karen. Now as a Virgo black spirited woman who is insane for fashion and all things visually, artistically driven I have lived my entire life this birthday month seeing this sea of melanin meet me at the news stands and checkout isles (I thought Queen B's take-over of Vogue was birthday gift enough...wont he do it?!) I hope we show our power with our dollar and buy any and every cover of us we can. If we are talking about the "non-celebrities" featuring lets talk about you Star. I saw you in that check/plaid bit you had the NERVE to upload on IG today and hunty! I would suggest YOU up next. Girl listen. You brought back the punk plaid days for me. I spazzed seeing you walk out of that bodega with those fucking white boots and moisturized afro in the wind. At-ti-tude! I am so pleased that you have made a point of shouting out to the editors about black women on covers of fashion mags. I live and work in South Africa, although I am originally from the UK, and for me, even as a white woman, I despair at how few top black models there are and how few make the covers of magazine. Things have improved, yes, but as you say, let this not be about tokenism -- let this be about how bloody FABULOUS fashion looks on a black skin! That's the bottom line, is it not? May fashion and magazine editors realise that, as you say, black models rock but they are not seen often enough on the main editorial pages to inspire the little girls who feel somehow that they are being overlooked because of their black skin. So here's to you, @KarenBritChick for pointing this out. You go, girl!

Black women along with latin woman and asian women are hard to find on covers and it is sad for young people looking for someone to relate. I'm sort of cynical on this one, Karen. But, truthfully speaking. My Mom would always buy all of the Fall Big fashion mags every September, even Seventeen mag, from 1960s and so on. Always white skinned. Items are much more expensive these days and it is well known that blacks spend millions more than any others in most marketplaces. Now this...yeah! because socially it's all women of color or blacks, is it ; and boo! Because its politics and economics. Who is getting the real benefit? Wealth. Powerful move. I would buy every one, just to frame the covers. Then draw from their stories, make patterns, sew and enjoy my own designs. Yes, fashion for me is empowering, creative and fun; yet, now and new for me more conscious of dressing my inner being than my other. I still and will always ĺove clothing ...and as an ART form as its value is More in Utility and Functionality, rather than in "DESIGNER". People are suffering unimaginable ills around the world and I think my passion for fashion must turn to compassion for the hearts of billions. Many don't even have clean drinking water and their are little brown babies lost to their parents because of derilects deflecting our attention to darn magazine covers. Yup, feeling guilty. No apologies. Just my 2cents. P.S. .. that leopard skirt.

I agree about photographing diverse people on the covers of magazines as well as doing fashion spreads with diverse people. It is about time that this does become mainstream and should have been all along. People are people and we are all equal. The problem though is that there will never be satisfaction felt by any group if we continue to see ourselves as a subgroup. I realize that history has created the monster but I am afraid that the future has a lot of apologizing to make up for history's bad manners. The instant that a white, blond, skinny, person gets photographed the irk of the non represented will rise once again. I believe that we should see ourselves as worthy and forget about what people have tried to make us believe about ourselves. It starts with each individual person. To be honest, I as an ethnic woman have never ever understood what people are talking about when they complain about being discriminated against. I have had my share of being mistreated but I saw it as more of "their" problem than mine. I was annoyed but I saw the person with the comments and actions against me as a very unenlightened person. I realize that I may have to work harder than most to be recognized but white males do as well when competing against each other. How does one measure the "work harder than another person" anyways? Do NOT let anyone make you believe that you are less important than them....ever!

I really apreciate the end of the video, your statement about diversity...Diversity should be the future, I mean, the visibility of diversity, because this already exist...People are EVERYONE, not only the white ones, not only the straight ones, not only the rich ones, not only christians....We should exercise this everyday, for instance with inclusive language and with RESPECT to all of them.

For the magazines I’ve seen more diverse covers and insides the last 2-3 years in Scandinavia which hasn’t a huge black population but more a mix of everything which isn’t our native- ultra white perhaps with right now a little bit more of Arabic descent ( sounds like toothpaste doesn’t i)
