Paul n Greg continue to delve into what are the best overland vehicles for long distance expeditions/trips. Fortunately he's got a popular 79 series and a 76 series Land Cruiser in the workshop to go through some of the pros and cons - on episode 9 of Responsible Overlanding.
Presented by Gregory Simpson.

I'm really interested in the question V6 4.2 vs. V8 4.5 in the 70 series - is it worth the higher price considering the weaknesses and strenghts like fuel, simplicity to maintain and repair, fuel consumption, power, reliability, knowledge about the engine as well as spare parts etc. etc. Furthermore I'm interested in price ranges for such kind of outfitted, sort of refurbished 2nd hand cars. Just to get an impression where does it start for a proper 'low budget' truck, what is the mid range and what would be a very nice and well equipped one. Just some thoughts which could be interesting for me and I guess for a lot of other viewers out here :) GREAT WORK!!! I absolutely appreciate the work of both of you! Thank you for this valuable content ! ! !

Hi TundZ In terms of budget entry level truck for overlanding, the cheapest would be the petrol V8 80 series. Very reliable/strong engine, and the extra you pay on fuel will be offset by cheaper price. Can get a good one for around 150k. Then next you'll be looking at a 4.2 petrol 80 or 105 series. Good one will be north of R200k. Then next up is the 76 series station wagon. Normally has the 4.2 which in my mind is best engine, reliability is primary for long trips. Not as much space as the 79 and Troopy. Then at the top of the class, is the 79 series land cruiser and Troopy. Troopys are rare in most countries, but you can live inside. In terms of buying a fitted used overland truck, be careful that is has not been smashed offroad. If you are on a tight budget, I'd go for an 80 series, ideally the 4.2 straight 6 if you have the budget and slowly build up the truck. The V8 D4D is a great engine, but struggles with rubbish diesel on the newer 79 if you want to go very remote. Anyways, I'm going to collect all the viewer questions and have a Q n A with Paul when business opens up again. Thanks for the support.

Paul, great info! One question, I conduct quite a few of my expeditions with 3 people (so 4 in total), thus rear seats need to be comfortable and recline a bit, so I guess an SUV would be the more obvious choice. Taking the type of motor, robustness, comfort and utilizing of maximum load space for basics, i.e. fridge, drawers etc.., into consideration, would you go for a LC76, a LC100/105HZ, a Fortuner or what else is there?
@Africasideways
@Africasideways 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question ASD, I'll add it to the list for Paul to answer. IMO you'll be tight on space with an SUV with 4 people plus gear. You might need to consider a Hilux (which is more comfortable than the LC79), or tow a small trailer behind the LC100/105.

I live in Australia and have a fully kitted out LC200 (with the VDJ motor). I have it detailed on my channel Jafffa Adventures if you are interested. I’m in the preliminary stages of researching global overlanding and am considering a 12 month Africa trip, all camping/overlanding based. Pretty much exactly what you did with ASPW on the Canning stock route. The question is, do I ship my rig over and use it, or do I buy a common Toyota model in SA (or other African country), kit it out as necessary, use it in Africa and then sell it. It’s a seriously complex question, but I trust you can answer one specific part of my consideration. Is the 200 Series turbo diesel available in Africa and can I get parts for mine should I run into any serious mechanical issues? I will carry the usual spares, but if I blow a steering rack for example, can I get replacement parts? Any assistance would be very welcomed Paul. Cheers, Terry

Hi Jaffa, thanks for the question, will check out your channel. I'll pass it on to Paul. IMO it depends where in Africa you are going to travel. In Southern Africa the V8 diesel will be fine on fuel and spares - In SA, Bots, Zim, Moz and Nam. The 200 is sold in South Africa. If you want to travel deeper into Africa, Paul normally suggests the older Ihz engine. You can get dodgy fuel and wreck in the V8, which is harder to fix in remote Africa and less spares. I'd suggest you give Paul a call and do a build in SA, use it and sell when you return to Aus. Cheers.

Doubt that 8cyl vehicle gets more than 12mpg. Better have a dual gas tank. Modern gasoline engines are much more tolerant of bad gas than modern diesel engines are tolerant of high sulfur diesel fuel. Do those set up have 40+ liters onboard water storage with filtration going in and going out?
