Regarding Jax's outwardly abrasive and aloof personality, I feel like his mischievous, pranksterish streak is a coping strategy: since he's trapped in the Digital Circus with everyone else and doesn't have any control over his world, he uses those random pranks and snide comments as a way to _reclaim_ some degree of autonomy -- provoking emotional reactions from his fellow prisoners in a sort of 'I _prank,_ therefore I _am'_ affirmation that he's still _himself._ But it's a _facade,_ and we see the mask slip off very briefly at the end of the second episode: when Ragatha and Kinger bring up Kaufmo's funeral, for a brief moment, a saddened expression crosses Jax's face, right before he shakes it off and walks away. He _knows_ his coping strategy has _limits,_ and seeing Kaufmo lose his mind was an irrefutable reminder of how _little_ control he actually _has_ -- so he threw himself into the next adventure as a _distraction,_ using Denial, Anger and Bargaining to avoid having to confront Sorrow. (I'm sure he's watched enough people Abstract to know that the fourth step of Kübler-Ross is what _breaks_ people, and he'd rather run from his feelings than follow that same path.)

I think that the creator also said that, other than Kingler, Jax has been there the longest (or the 3rd longest, Zooble might be ahead of him there), and I think is one of the 2 youngest there, and that Jax and Zooble basically grew up in the Digital Circus, arriving when they were just teens (hence Jax's maladaptive coping mechanisms).

Didn’t Jax protect Kinger and Gangle from abstracted Kaufmo too? And he seemed a bit angry when Kaufmo was locked away by Caine too
@Nitrinoxus
@Nitrinoxus Ай бұрын
@AnInsideJoke That makes sense. The two of them definitely come across like they're younger, while their level of detachment speaks to being more used to the Circus's quirks -- though neither of them is as detached as Kinger, whose near-total dissociation from reality ironically makes him the _least_ likely to Abstract (he stopped questioning his reality some time ago, and aside from his brief moments of lucidity, he just takes everything at face value, no matter how absurd it is).
@firelight3806
@firelight3806 28 күн бұрын
Jax is unironically correct. Gangle and Kinger are some of the most mentally stable of the bunch. Kinger with what you said about disassociation and Gangle being almost constantly depressed means the threshold to break her mind is higher due to needing much stronger depressive situations to break her mind further (kinda similar to the shifting of the Overton Window). Zooble is has a pretty healthy way of dealing with it but as with Jax, it’s a mask that will eventually slip off. Gangle figuratively and literally can’t unmask and Kinger doesn’t have the ability to process what’s going on for extended periods to start breaking down further. Ragatha is mostly denial. She enthusiastically plays into her role much like Jax does as a distraction but takes very little to nudge her over the edge.

At the end when Pomni's nightmare from the beginning replays, everyone in the group is seen grabbing her hand to save her except Jax's. So Pomni definitely doesn't consider Jax a friend due to his worst behavior and wouldn't expect him to have her back like the others. This is even more notable because Pomni still imagines Gangle's hand (or ribbon). Keep in mind, Pomni literally hasn't shared a single conversation with Gangle yet, but she'd rather entrust her life to somebody who is effectively a total stranger than someone like Jax. Granted, Gangle is nothing like Jax and doesn't have a mean bone in her body, but again, she and Pomni have yet to properly communicate, so the point still stands.
@joshuaagee-bass4049
@joshuaagee-bass4049 Ай бұрын
Because Jax skipped the funeral and Pomni was looking at Ragatha when he showed his (split second) ounce of sadness. We as the audience have hints that Jax might not be heartless (he saved saved Kinger and Gangle, was upset as Caine locked Kaufmo away) but Pomni has every reason to believe Jax is a complete sociopath.

I'm do glad you did Digital Circus. Out of all the characters, I definitely see myself in Pomni the most. We act just alike. I struggle a lot with being social and I'm shy, but I will comfort people if needed. Whether it's face to face or over text. Even if I'm struggling myself, I can open up to people that I also let open up to me so I can relate to them. This is why I find a lot comfort in Pomni's character. My second favorite and the one I see myself in is Gangle. We're very sensitive and we have depression. But we have a happy mask. And the third is a bit of Ragatha. Because we are people pleasers. I see flaws I know I have in her. And sometimes we'll lie to make people feel better, while trying so hard not to hold a grudge and be understanding.

It's amazing how much depth we can gleam from the main cast in only the first two episodes. I, for one, look forward to Gangle, Kinger, and Zooble-centered episodes, since while I feel like I have a good understanding of the kind of personalities for Pomni, Ragatha, and Jax and how they cope with being in the Digital Circus, I feel like we could use a bit more insight about the others, like is Gangle's mood-swinging actually tied to her masks, or just how aware is Kinger when it comes to any given situation. I'm especially intrigued by how the series will handle Zooble, since they aren't interested in Caine's wacky adventures and, unless forced to otherwise, won't bother participating in any of them, which initially had me somewhat concerned that they won't get enough screentime for use to get to know them, but Gooseworx did eventually confirm that every episode will have a focus on at least one of the main characters (I believe she said the "Jax episode" won't come until at least after episode 4).

God damn these designs are genius in a way I didn't even realize! In Jax's case, I personally think he cares more than he's letting on. When you consider things like taking steps to protect kinger and gangle, but only when he knows there's real danger, and also the way he hesitates before leaving kaufmo's funeral like he has to actively remind himself not to get too close, I doubt that a sociopath would need to practice that behavior
@vigorouslethargy
@vigorouslethargy Ай бұрын
It's definitely a case of him not wanting to make strong friendships with people, because from his perspective they *will* eventually abstract and he doesn't want to feel that loss. It's easier on his psyche if he can tell himself "We never liked each other anyway" after they're gone.

I'm definitely a super feeler like Pomni, with uncertainty, and because of it I get exhausted, and can either start or end an interaction like Zooble. Been told on multiple occasions that I am too "cold" and "Frigid" or "rude" , and I am always confused because I always feel like I was doing what I was doing or saying needed to be said in the most simple way. But I've noticed that its just me spreading myself in a way that I think is manageable for myself, I can't put all my energy into one thing otherwise i burn out. Alot of people don't like my baseline, lots of people think I'm a very rude person, but the people who have stuck around always tell me, "No you're not rude you're straightforward, blunt, you're always thinking about other people that you often forget about yourself.

To me, Jax feels like a guy who loves messing around in the circus because he knows that they're in a video game. In the circus, everyone's immune to starvation, sleep deprivation and presumably can't feel pain unless it's through an abstracted individual. That's why he's stopped taking things that seriously and horses around with the safety with the other residents- his life and others' lives suddenly have very few stakes. He especially enjoys how others take the circus really seriously, which is why he teases Pomni so much.

I'm a psychology major who loves TADC, so of course this video was right up my alley (I also liked watching your Hazbin Hotel ones earlier this year)! I really enjoyed watching this and think your interpretations of the characters are very interesting, and quite accurate. Jax in particular is a tough character to read, but you might be right about him being more of an understimulated troublemaker trying to preserve himself, versus someone truly evil and lacking all remorse. I was thinking he was going to shape up to be the latter until a blink-and-you-miss-it moment late in the second episode, where he very briefly looks mournful right before Kaufmo's funeral, then instantly shakes it off and rolls his eyes. I think in Jax we have a very emotionally repressed and potentially very traumatized character, and I'm interested to see his further development in the series (the creator of the show, Gooseworx, confirms the sixth episode spotlights Jax). I think the only interpretation of yours where I personally see the character quite differently is Kinger. I definitely can understand the ADHD interpretation, and the sense he's been sheltered, but my (again, personal and subjective) interpretation leans more towards him having PTSD, and some symptoms of dissociation as well (which may be the reason why he forgets who he's around and what he's talking about so quickly, and gets startled so easily). This is more niche info found on Gooseworx's tumblr, but Kinger has been in the circus the longest, and there was also a character named Queenie, who was a Queen chess piece, who abstracted in the circus. We don't know anything about her as of now, but I have a feeling that Kinger's time trapped in the circus, along with likely seeing Queenie abstract, contributed to his dissociative symptoms and gave him trauma, if not PTSD. Thank you if you did read my long paragraph (and thank you to any strangers in the comments reading it), I like talking about this stuff!

OooOOOoo If you're tackling Gltich shows, do murder drones too! Oh and Lackadaisy (after they have a few episodes out) One of the BIG advantages of these indie animations on YT, Like Hazbin, Helluva Boss, Digital Circus, is productions takes a LONG time, and the writers can iterate the script all the way to the last scene drawn. This gives them TIME to TRULY be creative, get every personality right, ever line written perfect. These Indie YT animations are a lot like the very early Simpsons or Family Guy shows, production took time, so writing had quality. Mainstream stuff these days uses 2D puppet rigs, and episode could be decently produced in a week. Rip writing and 'natural' character development.

Actually their designs reflect their personality and a form of entertainment: 1:49 . Like you said, Ragatha is a ragdoll because people throw her around, but also because a ragdoll’s purpose is to bring you comfort as you hug it, which is why she’s a people pleasing caretaker; . Jax is based on trickster rabbits from cartoons, like Bugs Bunny, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit…; . Gangle represents theater and she wears masks to hide her insecurities, leaving her a weeping mess whenever she’s a unmasked, not unlike many comedian actors; . Zooble is based on a toy that Goose used to play and since they can change body parts many times, they lost their sense of gender; . Kinger is the oldest among the players, therefore he’s based on one of the oldest games (chess) and he’s crazy and weak because in chess the King is the weakest pawn of the game; . Pomni is a jester because people don’t take her seriously, even though, at least in Italian culture, jesters are known to be very observant and to tell us harsh truths hidden behind their jokes, in Arlecchino’s style.

Did you catch Jax's facial expressions when Kaufmo's funeral was mentioned? For a split second, he looks sad, but then he shakes it off and leaves. He is masking.

I think Jax wants blood, violence, and chaos because he wants to be entertained. He’s to be more disappointed than depressed when it doesn’t happen, and I mean, if you want substantial evidence, he literally admitted it himself. “I’m fine with doing whatever. As long as I get to funny things happen to people.”

Im definitely a kinger with some traits of zooble and gangle. Lots of ADHD, easily distracted, for years i were stuck in my own shell and feared the outside world building my own little safe haven and couldnt emotionally cope when in stressful scenarios. Overtime ive learnt to think of the world as exciting rather than frightful, to recognise when a situation is stressful and leave to regain myself before resuming, and make a lot of reminders so i dont forget certain tasks or can come back to them later as i tend to multitask :)

I'm kind of a mix of Pomni and Ragatha with a dash of Gangle, and all these ring true tbh. That said, Caine still remains my favourite character in this series thus far, and while it may sound awful, I did laugh when Gummigoo exploded...but not because I didn't feel as Pomni did, because I did (I get emotionally attached to fictional characters very easily), but because as a creative storyteller myself, I understood why it happened and it was just so violently funny to do it in that particular way. It was a weird mish-mash of "OMFG" (horrified) and "Omfg, that was brilliant!" (admirable)

When it comes to Jax, my thoughts are that he's doing what he does just to keep himself from going insane, and ultimately becoming abstracted. Laughing at others' misery is his way of keeping him distracted from the cold truth that he's stuck in a virtual world with (seemingly) no way out. That doesn't excuse his actions, of course.

One of the doors in the hallway of character's rooms was a queen piece. Kinger was also there the longest, according to Jax. I think it's not unreasonable to assume that Kinger is repressing most of his own life as a survival mechanism, including most likely, the insanity and loss of his other half.
@jlokison

Kinger is also dealing with, poorly, the loss of Queenie and I thought it was mentioned his distracted, inattentive and disassociating got much worse after she disappeared or abstracted.

I am a total Ragatha (sp?). In my childhood it was so bad I married my entire identity to my SO. If they didn't like something, I stopped doing it. If they didn't like someone, I stopped talking to them. It actually made our relationship extremely toxic. It wasn't until my 30s that I started to advocate for myself and draw boundaries. The moment I did, the most fascinating thing happened - my SO was HAPPY for the first time in years. They looked at me and said: "I have been trapped, raising you, thinking for you - BEING you - for as long as I have known you. But all I wanted, all this time, was a partner. Someone to stand next to me instead of behind me. You have no idea how much of a relief it is, to finally have that."

Jax is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT defensive. There are scenes where he shows he cares and he especially tried to hide the abstraction thing as to not cause distress for the others. He also has this scene where when the funeral for Kaufmo takes place, his facial expression softens, and then he kind of shakes it off looking mad. That man is probably really genuinely caring, but also terrified.
@_FatNuggets_
@_FatNuggets_ 25 күн бұрын
I think he's trying to keep himself distant from the others to avoid any genuine connection since abstracting is a very common thing, plus it would reveal his emotions, making him vulnerable in his eyes.

jaxs square eyes seem to be his true eyes, so if you look in that in the animation it might help, you see it a few times throughout the episodes with jax you notice he never opens his teeth (oh his own his character modle getting scuffed from zooble doesnt count) so the phrase "lying through your teeth" comes to mind when i think of him, so when you want to see what he really thinks look at his eyes, its pretty interesting tbh
@NS_Light123

6:42 Okay, from my view of this, he was hiding from Kaufmo, he doesnt care about the others (in this part) but he knew if he went in the hole himself, he'd had to deal with the gloink queen, so he threw the ball at them just so he can hide from the monster while also not needing to exactly be apart of the adventure. 7:55 And for this, pretty sure he just likes being an a-hole, its nothing related with trauma, just fun cuz why not? Oh and, near the end where they talk about Kaufmo's funeral, I know Jax looked sad for a split second i did not miss that, but it probably just means that despite messing around with others genuinely because its fun, its still possible to be feeling upset about their disappearance, from out of Jax's view, we can kinda perceive him as the kind to "miss you when you're gone", but of course, he'll never admit to it. Point is, though he's truly finding amusement in torture, he does feel empathy for others, yet he'll push it down as to not show weakness, to him, being weak is stupid especially if he's the jerkiest of the group.

Another great video, love to see it! I would love if you made an analysis on God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok, there is a lot to look into the characters of Kratos, Atreus and many other characters there, especially knowing the kind of flawed character Kratos was in the previous games and the atrocities he has done in his past and the way he grew to be better, and of course you don't need to see the entire game saga to do it with many videos on youtube resuming his story up to the last two games which are the ones worth watching for the purposes of the video

Wow I'm here 59 seconds in, talk about making it before the one minute mark! And can't wait to watch! The Digital Circus chars are so very interesting, Jax in particular considering what a jax@ss he is, and the fact we don't know what sort of motivation he may have for this, like if he's just naturally a jerk or if it's a result of his situation, or if he was already like that but made worse by his situation Edit: I always thought of him as saving them, especially since he lies to spare their feelings, reassuring them that there’s nothing to worry about, and then saving them but passing it off as just him being his usual mischievous self Though it *is* interesting that he’d do that considering it’s basically the *only* nice thing we’ve seen him done (and given the creator’s comments that he’ll only get worse as the show progress, we probably wasn’t there to plant the idea that he has redeeming moments that’ll become more prominent over time)
