Thank you very much, Myk! I love packing cubes. They don't offer much compression, but lots of organization. Also you can just take them out in the hotel and use the backpack for daytrips for instance.

I would not go for packing cubes tho bcoz it can be quite stiff & you can't maximize the space. I like DIY so I create small bags from used or torn shopping bag (canvas/woven fibre) & used it to separate my stuff.

@@Youknowthebo Hi, I'm looking for a backpack that can carry an A3 size display book, but I'm having difficulty finding one. I'm also a smaller person, but I don't mind a larger bag as long as I can fit A3 size pads and books. I prefer to carry them in a bag rather than in my hands. Do you have any suggestions? I'm looking to replace my current backpack, which does fit A3 books. I use it for college. If I can use the same backpack for short trips that would be great

It also depends on the shape of the items you're trying to fit. If the items are rigid like a laptop or books, it's going to be difficult. However, clothes can be folded and shaped according to the space you have left so that you can fit everything.

Agreed. This video is definitely far from being very scientific, but I hope it gives you a basic idea on which volume size you might need. ;-)

For a weekend trip, you would take all of the stuff you take on a daily basis in addition to the clothes. The second scenario would have been much more helpful stuffing all of the combined stuff into a bag. (hence the need for a bigger bag. Also the different openings do different things. The clam-shell allows full access to all your stuff, but doesn't pack as well as a stuff drawstring type pack. The worst opening is the 50% zipper opening because you can't access your stuff and you can't access everything. It would be good to see a full comparison. Very helpful though for buying things online.

Great video! :) One thing I will add to this video next time is how a bag size looks on your back. You talked about how a 35L might be better as a daypack for a taller person than on a shorter person because how large it is. I think one of the problems when it comes searching a bag size is also how does it fit on your back depending on your height.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Kenny! That's a valid point. I guess my point only refers to looks rather than fit. I usually look like a giant walking turtle if I carry a 35L bag haha

Very useful video, not just to show how much certain litre bags can hold but also to show that the design of the bag is really important. A few tips that I find useful in maximising space: - if a pack has good organisation and layout, it can carry A LOT more than it looks. For example the 5.11 LV18 (which I bought recently) appears to be quite small at first but it can handle a lot - used it on a weekend trip to Germany recently and it was perfect. And I could still fit a laptop in! - for clothes, the "army roll" method really helps with thinner/smaller items e.g. boxers, t-shirts, long sleeved tops; but for bulkier items like jeans it's best to pack them flat - the design of any external water bottle pouches is important. On some bags, they interfere with internal space if you use too large a bottle. - you can buy vacuum bags as an alternative to packing cubes: you just fill the bag, then pump out the air and it compresses down so so much. Probably more useful for suitcases though. - a pack that has external straps or loops/molle for lashings can come in handy. So if you have a bulky item, e.g. jacket, tripod etc you can just have it located externally on the bag. Also, general molle/loops etc on the outside can be used to attach items such as a rain cover.

I agree wholeheartedly with your unscientific scientific-type approach to this topic. The only nitpick is with the clothes, as there will be differing climates that will affect the size and type of garments packed for a trip. Just my two cents...

I bought one of these after my Nomatic backpack (with expandable compartment) got stolen. What I did not like about my Nomatic backpack was the appearance, the material (not truly water proof esp the small easy access compartment), the deformed shape after 6 months use and the service (keep packing wrong accessories I purchase). However, I do really like the way things are compartmentalised (very well thought out and convenient). I got a modular backpack with sports accessory. It has only been 24 hours so I will talk about the things I missed from the Nomatic backpack and what I like about it. I really like the material, the appearance of it. In fact I carry quite heavy gears and I find the so called' ugly ' shoulder straps very comfortable. The exterior design is very futuristic and tech - go with people who likes tech wear) However I missed a top, front easy excess pocket for gums, keys, USB, coins (The small pouch that came with the sport pouch is not easy access). As a result, I purchased another pouch for 45 dollars that allow me to have easy access. I also immediately noticed that there isn't a 'sleeve' or space that allow the handle of wheeled luggage to go through, for the bag to sit on a luggage. Haven't actually place the backpack in use in my daily work life. Will see.

Another fantastic video, Bo! I own a GORUCK 15L Bullet, 34L GR2, and 20L Rucker. It's funny that even though the Bullet is billed as a daypack, I like the Rucker (when I'm not using it for training, of course) as my occasional daypack since its dimensions can accommodate more ordinary sized objects. I find that even though the GR1 is described as an EDC bag, I carry enough that the 34L GR2 is perfect. The 40L GR2 would be easier for packing more stuff during travel scenarios, but would likely not fit under as many airline seats.

Great video. I will recommend this to people before a trip. It’s funny how the subtle specifics of a bag will make a difference, though: I love the GoRuck 10L Bullet Ruck for everyday use, but I tried their 15L Echo and it almost seemed to hold less, due to shape and the relative flexibility of the sides and back when stuffing in those last few items. (On the other hand, those qualities would make it better than the Bullet if you were carrying something super heavy.)
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, James! I totally agree with you: the different shapes and materials can change the volume quite a bit. Unfortunately, the volume measurement usually is the only number that you get from companies and that gives a very rough idea of what you could fit. Therefore: THis video is definitely not a scientific measurement haha. But I hope it will help some people nevertheless ;-) Weniger anzeigen

I am stuck in the universe of ''22l backpacks are too small and 28l backpacks too big''. I think this video explains why, it all comes down to the design. Volume size is not indicative unfortunately, you'll have to inspect the specifics of each backpack separately before deciding which one best fits your needs.

But its so damn sad! how 35L backpack fails. It is probably because of it's form. If backpack is soft its capacity is more stretchy. If backpack hard and square shaped, then even with 35L capacity it can not fit all the boxes/organizers :(((

Hey Adrian. If the bag is larger than the adviced measurements it is definitely a gamble. It really depends on the look of the bag and the crew. Most of the time the airline's staff won't measure the bag, but if it looks suspiciously big then they might ask you to measure it. Furthermore, if they have a good day and you are friendly, they might just let you pass. Unfortunately, there is no sure way to tell, so if you want to be 100% sure better go with a slightly smaller bag

Was it enough for your three week trip to Asia? Could you kind of give me a ballpark of what you brought with? Thanks!

Discentify it’s enough space if you wash your cloth on the way! I’ve packed so far I can remember 6 T-Shirts, 6 pairs of underwear, 4 pairs of socks, FlipFlops, a micro fibre towel, my LumixG6 Camera with three lenses, charger, Kindle, inflatable neck pillow, one lightweight hoodie, two pairs of shorts, two swim shorts, UV-Swim-Shirt and an iPad, Headphones etc. I used packing cubes to organise all this stuff of course 😉 there was even space for a small foldable day backpack. Hope that is helpful for you.

LOVE THIS VIDEO! I'm not kidding, it's just perfect, it shows more or less what you need depending on your carry. Good job Bo. Do you recomend Arcido Faroe Backpack for a 1 month travel on which you will need to walk a lot? Those shoes in the 2:55 so great! where are them from? Would you do a similar video but with long stay travels? In the minimalist style. Week and a half carriage for 1 month or so, in different backpacks, or different weathers... something like that. Its so illustrating! Keep it up!

Thanks, mate! THose are the Adidas ZX Flux. I got them in Jakarta a couple of years back. Not sure if you can get them in that color though. I havent tested the Arcido properly yet. So far it seems very comfortable to carry. I personally wouldn't be able to use only this bag for one month. But that's only because I haven't nailed the "One bag travel" philosophy yet ;-) In terms of doing another video for longer travels: That is actually quite difficult as there are so many factors to consider. Different climates, different packing styles etc. For instance, I'm usually freezing a lot, therefore I would probably carry more clothing than other people.

Hi, i have a question and hopefully I get an answer. Which bag size do I need for Sixth form? You know I need to fit my books, folder etc... And if you can give me the best height to. Thank you.

Hi. It's been a long time since I have been to school. 20 years to be exact 😂 that is why I have no clue about what you actually need to pack and how big the bag needs to be. I would assume with bigger folders that are really wide a bag of at least 20L is needed. But that's just speculation. I am in Germany so our paper and book sizes are different than in the US for instance. But I think you would need a 22L bag that can fit a 15"laptop because I assume that the footprint of a laptop should have a similar size like a folder

Bo Ismono, thank you sooo much for helping me. Ohh 20 years is long enough for anyone to forget 😂. I just looked up 22L bags and I found one that can fit 15” laptop, however my main concerned is the depth of the bag. The bag I found has depth of 14cm, do you think this is enough? Again thank you very much!

I get what you're saying with bigger volume not meaning you can put more stuff in. I have an old 28 liters laptop bag which I'm thinking about putting /giving away once I get a new bag. I mainly used it for carrying my laptop since it's quite weather resistant. I can't use it for traveling as its design is not very space-efficient.
