Dude, Estonian is not a Baltic language, it's a Finnic language. "Baltic" is just a geopolitical term made up by the (historical) colonizers of these three countries, mainly Germans and Russians. This was not a choice of the indigenous nations of these countries. Latvians and Lithuanians started to use the term Baltic to describe themselves and their culture and language sometime in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, so pretty recently. Estonians however are instead Finnic, as I mentioned earlier, more related to Finns in every aspect.

The fun fact who don't know that - Lithuanian and Latvian is Baltic language but Estonian is Finno-Ugric language! :) And one more fact about Latvia - in Latvia there is 2x languages - Latvian and Latgalian (many Latvians who never been heard Latgalian will not easy understand what is Latgalian saying) - I make example Latvian you say ''viņš'' (he) but in Latgalian ''jis'' (he); ''mazdēls'' (grandson) in Latvian but ''unkus'' (grandson) in Latgalian; ''Cilvēks'' (human) in Latvian but ''Cylvāks'' (human) in Latgalian. Latgalians have one more letter then in Latvian alphabet ''y'' but in Latvian alphabet there is no such letter. As a child, I managed to live in Latgale in the summer and I learned a few words in Latgalian, but my wife is from another part of Latvia and she has never been to Latgale - and if a plot about Latgale is shown on TV and a Latgalian is interviewed there, she says that she does not understand anything . The Latgalian language is used by approximately 160,000 inhabitants of Latvia.

I am an American of partial Lithuanian ancestry on my mother's side, but out of all the countries in Europe that my ancestors came from, I probably know the least about Lithuania. I think I need to do some more research lol.

I'm launching a project in Latvia and biy are those languages different!!! We can find a word similar here and there, same language tree after all, but honestly you could say this about any other European language. We-do-not-understand-each-other !
@CineMairon2 жыл бұрын
Not being from any of those countries but having studied a little bit of them through films and songs, Estonian are closer to Finnish, and Lithuanian with Latvian are very similar, almost the same if you change some Lithuanian "a" with "e" and make the "s" lighter...maybe take the rich "z" away too. I love those languages but Lithuanian is closer to heart for me for personal reasons (started because of Hetalia and grew through friendships). I speak some too. It's interesting how they combine Latin with Slavic. PS: The Chilli lady was in the right mood all way through XD

There's no trace of Slavic in any of these languages. Only time you'll hear Russian is when somebody is cursing you out
@user-ge4uk9ui8y2 жыл бұрын
@@compatriot852 Both Slavic and Baltic languages come from the same ancestor Proto-Balto-Slavic, meaning that both Slavic and Baltic languages will be very similar, which they are in vocabulary and grammar (ežeras/ozero) (galva/golova). Also Lithuania and various lands of Rus (Ruthenia) were part of a single country at one point (LDK), this means that Lithuanian has a ton of Slavic words that can be found in modern Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian today. Bėda, miestas, kilimas, bažnyčia, kryžius, bajoras, turgus, katilas, stiklas are some examples.

Lithuanian language originates from Sanskrit which is one of the oldest languages in the world. It is one of the last remaining surviving languages that retains many of its features. It's an interesting read if you want to look in to this further.

Estonian is not a Baltic language, but a Finnic language (finno-ugric group), like Finnish. It belongs to the Uralic language family, not indo-european. This language has nothing to do with Latvian or Lithuanian, it's like comparing Greek and Turkish.

Term “sexy” hardly can be applied to any of these languages. But most pleasant sound perhaps is Latvian . Lithuanian, while very similar to Latvian , has too many of these “č,ž.š” sounds which makes it less pleasant. And Estonian sounds more funny , like a baby talk .
@blueeyedbaer2 жыл бұрын
It's possible to speak Lithuanian and entirely avoid those souds: "man labai patinka tavo plaukai, jie tokie nuostabiai geltoni/juodi/raudoni/rudi ir ilgi. Ir tavo didelės mėlynos/rudos akys. Bei tos putlios raudonos lūpos. Viskas viename mielame veide, kuris priklauso nuostabiausiam asmeniui". See? Not a single š, č, ž.
