For new players, if you have the option, get the XBLA versions, where things like Jinjos and Notes are saved upon pickup. For people who have played it for a while, or started out on the N64 version like me, I prefer that. There's an added challenge to trying to get everything in one go, and I do feel like something is missing when I enter RBB and don't see notes on the bridge onto the ship.

The XBLA version is great in many ways because it's a remaster with a lot of good quality of life improvements like that as well as higher resolution, higher resolution textures and HUD, wide screen, framerate boosted to 60fps, etc. Excellent version of the game. Only crappy thing is that the cutscenes would be out of sync with the music in some cutscenes. This is especially noticable in Tooie because it pushed the N64 hardware to it's limits and the framerate suffered as a result so with it suddenly being a remastered version running at 60fps the cutscenes are SO much faster and are really out of sync. It annoys me because XBLA is my preferred way to play Kazooie and N64 is my preferred way to play Tooie due to that issue. It makes me feel like I'm downgrading when playing them back to back. But the cutscene music is just so far out of sync in Tooie that it bothers me. It does make a huge difference playing it in 60fps though since it ran so slow normally.

I’ve just completed Banjo-Kazooie on NSO and it was just fine - a higher resolution version of the original that’s perfect for my taste. 👍🏼

Personally, I also hated the controls when first starting the switch version, but after playing around with the system settings I found it is actually very easy and intuitive to manually remap buttons in the system settings and reccomend giving it a try. I have been using that ever since. You can save button map files with different names and I have one simply called Banjo with B mapped to A and Y mapped to B. I would recommend trying it out, it isn't as much of a hassle as you would think. When you are done playing Banjo there is a reset button in the remap menu you can select and if you forget to reset it, a prompt will come up allowing you to reset your controls later if you so desire.

You should be able to customize it for each game though. Just because I want my controls a certain way in Banjo Kazooie does not mean I want my controls that way in BOTW.

I agree with this sentiment. It is true of course you can change it via the menu, but having to change it exclusively each time is a big pain. Could be me but a per game basis would have made things much easier

You can save four individual slots and name them what you want so you can do per game, but it is inconvenient that you can't permanently set it to have various controls automatically upon booting a game up. I still would recommend giving it a try if you haven't though because it is at least better than I expected.

Aside from the atrocious camera that plagued the original too, the input lag on the switch makes BK even less enjoyable which is a shame, because it could be otherwise a very good game.

Yea the input lag really sets me off in combination with the Bluetooth lag. I wish it could be remedied but it's a product of the emulation and hardware. Camera can't be helped either. It was more designed for a camera button than a stick.

A button remapping I do when playing N64 games on Switch is: A>B B>Y Y>X X>A. The closest I can get to the button layout of the 64. And while that messes with some of the muscle memory on the UI, as a preset for N64 games, it's convenient.

Another way to play Banjo Kazooie and it's on the go 👍. I still think than the XBLA is the best version, with true 1080p / 4K, wide screen, better control/camera and the jiggsaw puzzle be fix with permanent and note a high score system. Good stuff 👍

As a 90's Nintendo kid, this is probably the port that will finally push me into purchasing a switch online sub. That being said, I do very much appreciate videos like this that present honest opinions and insights, rather than just trailer vids from Nintendo & affiliates that don't tell you anything. I appreciate Microsoft finally sharing the license, but the XBLA/ Rare Replay versions are THE way to play the Banjo games on modern hardware and controllers. I'd rather wait a few years for that to happen than play a shoddier port than I get from Project 64.

I bought a n64 and banjo about three weeks ago because I wanted to play it again. But after years of being pampered with high fps games it was hard for me to enjoy playing my n64. Noticed that banjo was dropping for the switch so I picked up a oled model and the 64 online and it’s been great! I’ve really been having a blast going through and 100%’ing the levels. Only problem is what you mentioned.. the a and b buttons are backwards! And the n64 switch controller isn’t in stock.

I totally understand alot of people not liking the FPS performance for the N64. It stutters, it dips, it's definitely not stable, but FPS isn't an issue like now. I'm so used to thr N64 version. But I think the Switch version is very good and a great way to play! Glad you absolutely enjoying it!!

I just finished the game and i used a pro controller. The final fight was tricky because I couldn't shoot eggs forward without messing up the camera. I got so frustrated that I chose to shoot eggs the opposite way after 30+ tries going forward. I would love the N64 controller but it is always out of stock.

Something else NSO lacks of the original Nintendo 64 version is the configuration of the instruments in the themes, that made the music fit with the atmosphere of the ambiance. For example, in Grunty's Lair, the music had a lot of reverb and tremolo (like the marimba) and the Grunty laugh with reverb that Indicated us that she is on the top watching us.... In the NSO,None of the themes has Reverb or Tremolo :/. I don't know if this is an emulation Issue,Since something similar Happens in XBOX Live,but different since only there is no tremolo in the marimba (i don't know if that was tremolo I heard a little bit on echo in the original n64 version, in the others doesn't have it,I'm not expert in Music) But after All the Game is still enjoyable in both NSO or N64 I have the N64 version :).

My problem with the controllers Is you have to hold ZR to use the C buttons. Like if I want to use the golden feathers I have to press ZL ZR and A. However, if I want to jump while using the gold feathers, I have to remove ZR so I can jump. Just an annoying inconvenience.

the N64 version is superior to XBLA in regards to using the codes that don't relate to the stop N swop feature. I've already used the quality of life codes that help in a pinch like infinite air for example. and the best part is if you use the quality of life codes it doesn't delete your save file and here's a fun fact about the N64 NSO app. if you create a save state with the quality of life codes active they'll stay active as long as you don't load the game from the save file selection screen and only continue from where you last created a save state.

​@@Kelphelp I'm trying to have a nice discussion, you asked to tell you what we think about it and that what I did. People who actually play Banjo-Kazooie don't play it to watch the cutscenes. Like I said just skip the cutscenes if you have an issue with the fog it doesn't impact the gameplay at all just skip it by pressing Start button. When you mentioned the notes aspect it is also applies with the Jinjos as well with differences with the Nintendo 64 and xbox live versions. Also you should of mentioned that playing it through the switch you are still able undertake gameplay glitches like skipping most of Grunty's furnace challenge or you can still undertake the bottles -pre learnt move set glitch. In relation to the button layout and re- mapping there is an option through the Nintendo switch the change the button confirmation location so it feels more in line with the original 64 layout.
