Great video Dan! When we launched, our only option was a medium to medium thick oil and then with the introduction of Hemisqualane to our blend, it really opened me up to the benefits of using lighter oils as well. I do believe there’s a place for all of them and cycle between them all for the most part in my own routine. Great information that more people would benefit to understand!

My beard looks, feels, and styles way better when I'm regularly rotating between thin, medium, and thick oils. My rotation depends on my beard length at the time mostly. If it's at that 6 to 7 inch mark or shorter, I tend to work The heavier oils in more, and if it's longer, the opposite is true. My experience with different oils has been way better since I began doing this. The difference is very noticeable.

I do rotate oils between a couple favorite companies occasionally, but that isn't ever planned. That said, I've found another change that I make way more often based on how my beard feels that I believe is more effective with my beard...that is the amount of beard oil I use. Feels dry lately, use a little more. Feeling like too much lately, use a little less. Never drastic changes. These subtle "adjustments" have made all the difference in how my beard looks, feels, and styles. Like any other product usage or styling techniques, it comes down to using experience, making small adjustments, and experimenting a bit to figure out what will likely work best "today" for my beard. That's part of what makes this journey so enjoyable. Jim

This was great information! I use natural products; sometimes from bigger companies, sometimes from the folks at the farmers market. I choose the oil daily based on what scent I want to wear. I’ve noticed that my beard feels softer when I use certain ones. Now I realize it’s the thicker oils that make it softer. Anyway, I’ll stick with the random rotation now that I understand what’s happening with the various oils. Appreciate the info, man!!

Sound advice! I think I bought my first beard oil in 2015 and have yet to find one my beard doesn’t like. I started rotating thick, medium, and thin oils (daily) less than a year ago, and can’t say I’ve noticed much difference in my white beard and Mediterranean climate. But rotating does 2 things you didn’t mention - Individual bottles last longer because they aren’t used every day, and oils get to be used sooner than when “one-until-done”. For that reason, I feel better about the bottles I haven’t gotten to yet.

My white beard just does not like thick oil at all. Thick oils make my wild beard even wilder. Impossible to tame. I have switched to thin oil only and it is really helping keeping it under control. I will try alternating thin and thick to see what happens. I live in Canada and I have started using Mature Gents oils for a while now and I really like it. It works better than the Beard Octane I was using previously.

I try to stick with a medium viscosity 80% of the time, and rotate in a thin or a thick oil in the other 20% of the time. My bigger dilemma is figuring out which butter or balm to use because they vary so much from company to company. Usually I just use a matching butter or balm if I have the same fragrance, but when I don't it's a toss up.

I have a varriety of viscosities in my rotation. I alternate from week to week and find that is the best for me. At first I had that one company and it was good, but by branching out to others I find my beard just feels better. I cannot put my finger on why until I saw this video.

Usually rotate multiple brands due to the different oils in different brands. Change it up depending on weather. Warm and hot months I stick with thin oils and thicker when it’s cold. Every couple days I throw in some emu oil instead of beard oil just to kind of rehydrate my beard.

I absolutely love this, and thank you for presenting it as only you can! Lately, I’ve been trying something new that seems to be working for me. I use about two full droppers-one of a thinner to medium oil applied directly to the skin, and another of a thicker oil worked throughout the beard hair. I know this might seem like a bit of extra effort, and I’m not sure if it’s the combination of different oil viscosities that’s making the difference or simply the fact that I only use high-quality products, which might work regardless of the mixing. I’d love to hear your opinion on this! Thank you again, Dan C-I appreciate you so much.

My beard feels pretty good and started using a good rotation a few months into my beard journey. In the beginning, I used the 2 oils i had and as i started adding more to that rotation as i obtained new products. I now use a 6-company rotation for both oils and butters, not really paying attention to viscosity. For context, my current rotation includes Defined Beard, Fable Beard Co, Bearded Mack, Beard Octane and Detroit Grooming.

I have usually leaned towards the thicker oils. I really like ostrich and emu oils which feel very thick as compared to something that is more coconut/sunflower/safflower/vegetable base carrier blends. The nut based carrier blends seem like they land more in the middle. I live about a mile inland from the Pacific Ocean and it almost always has humidity in the 75-90% range. Being that it's a coastal desert though, it's not humidity like what you feel in Houston or New Orleans type of places. It's like a dry humidity. My beard isn't what I would describe as high density but it does have a lot of volume for how low density it is. When I started, my hairs were solidly in the brown scale and now I have that plus a dusting of white and Grey. Individually, my beard hairs feel double or triple the thickness of my head hair. I have no idea what "normal" is for that but as I have learned and listened to DC and my beard, I have definitely come around to a mixed up routine and I am working on trying to improve that. For those who see this and are skeptical like me (not to mention hard headed!!!), the best things I have done for my beard is to try these varied routines and stuff. I have emailed back and forth with DC on a number of occasions and brought up questions I had and he always responds. This bearded brother of ours walks the talk and he knows what he's talking about. Do I enjoy cold rinsing my beard? No, it kind of sucks to end a nice hot shower with some cold water. Do I do it? Yes, as often as I can stand it because it's made a positive difference in my beard. I used to only wash my beard 2-3 times a week and condition it 1-2 times. Now I wash it 5-6 times and condition it at least 4-5 times. My beard loves it! Do I have a perfect routine? Nope. Is it better than it used to be? 100% yes! Looking back, I can see where I was prior to having any routine or even knowing about any products and I can see improvement every step of the way. The only thing I would go back and change if I could is my willingness to try different things.

Pure jojoba is best for me. Stays soft the longest. I have to use a lot of avocado oil for same effect. Sweet almond, maybe worse? Not sure. Castor oil probably too thick for me. Coconut oil does not work at all for my beard. Dry and brittle no matter the dose. I only use pure oils, no scents or anything added. Jojoba for the win

Great topic, and love the balanced approach as well, changing up regularly every week. Weather aside, I like a nice thin oill after the weekly stripping wash and conditioner, for penetration and saturation. Other than that, weather becomes more of a factor in which order I use for the week, as well as diet and and how ive cared (or not) for my beard recently. Always on point, amazing advice,. I have a red beard and do have different companies and oils in the rotation. Just wondering if it’s ok to add a few drops high quality castor oil to my palm while I have a thin oil there to help make it a thicker oil. Not all the time just to make the thin oil thicker that day! Great advice as well thank you.

Thanks as always for making this video. I use a combination of medium viscosity oils and thin oils. I also have brown hair, so that oil type fits with my hair type. My go to is by Eighteen 21 because the bottles are mini oil cans and I like the look. Also like the Tonka Bean one from the blind barber. Added bonus both oils are made in the US, so I feel good supporting US companies.

Dan! I started my beard journey and found your content right around the same time so I sort of fell into a rotation of oils and products. I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way especially as seasons change and the impacts those seasons have on my beard. We spoke about this before but perhaps somehow we could create a reference sheet of the viscosity of oils? Maybe just your top hitters or affiliates? It would also be nice if the companies listed viscosity on the bottle or at least their websites! If any of that is just too much work, perhaps you could lay out an example of a company that falls into each viscosity category? Good topic and one I’m hoping to hone in on more as time goes on!

This is crazy because just a few days ago I was thinking about this exact topic. I have a nice rotation of about 8 quality companies total. Some I use more than others. This time of year (Long Island, NY), I feel like thinner oils suit me better. The thickest I use is Copper John's, and not too often. I usually go 2 days on each brand in alphabetical order so I don't forget where I am lol. Great video as always, Dan.

Im still figuring it out some over time. Right now I rotate copper Johns, Dr Nicks, and Beard Octane. Occasionally ill even mix a thinner blend with unscented from Copper Johns if its feeling a bit dry. My beard prefers thicker(CJs)- easy to tell from how much easier it is to fix, but definitely gets feeling dry if i dont use thinner oils in a rotation.

Love this topic because when someone asks me this question I say all of them.... Depends on the time of year with the weather and how my beard is feeling. I constantly change the viscosity of the oils I use but notice if I use a thin or thick oil how my beard is reacting. Is it frizzy or unruly or laying relaxed as that will dictate the oil rotation for the week. I know I will be outside in the cold I will use thick/medium those days. In the heat outside or on the water during the summer I will use thin/medium that week.

I sometimes struggle to identity the viscosity of some of my oils, often relying on your description to guide me. Some of my oils are thin to medium, only a few being the heavier variety. Is it wrong to think that the more cologne type oils fall into the heavy viscosity category?

Great video Dan! For my current nighttime routine I use about 6 drops of 8-Bit beard growth oil, which is a thick viscosity, comb my beard, and then once absorbed after 10 minutes I would apply about pea size of Bossman beard jelly and comb it again, and this routine has helped to tame the frizz next morning and keeps it relatively soft and manageable. For my morning routine I use about 3 drops of oil depending on what scent I want for the day, regardless if it’s thin or not, and 1/2 pea size of beard jelly mixed with a bit of water and it works like a balm without the stickiness. I like thicker oils at night because I noticed it helps to make the hairs heavier and easier to control the next day. I just reached 4 months and it’s the longest I’ve gone without trimming, but I’ll see if my routine will still work once I reach 6 months and beyond.

All good info Dan, I like to use a rotation of oils to manage my red/blond and now graying beard straight. Generally speaking though the medium to thicker oils get mine settled nicely, but if I keep using the thick oils my beard turns curly and lately I’ve been embracing the curly beard so I’ve not been rotating as much. So I use the oils to effectively style my beard to the desired look for my beard type it’s curlier the heavier the oil is.

I asked a couple of weeks ago why beard product companies don't list the viscosities of their oils. You commented that it was probably because it was subjective. That being said, how does one shop for their desired vicosity? Is it purely trial and error? Just keep buying until you find the right viscosity for you? There must be an easier way. Or am I missing something?
