Chansey's advantage is that she gets to use her huge Special defensively.

That's not really enough to help Chansey though. Sure 105 special defense is nice but there's still the pesky 5 in both physical attack and defense. Rhydon meanwhile has 120 physical defense and 45 for each special. So I'd give the edge to Rhydon given the attack stat it's using its higher and it has better coverage along with the fact it outstrips Chansey by miles in physical defense while not getting beat nearly as bad in special defense. Also most the advantage conferred by Chanseys higher HP stat and slightly faster Speed stat is lost due to being restricted to only physical moves being allowed therefore it takes longer to down an opponent giving them plenty of chances to fight back.
@ZorotheGallade
@ZorotheGallade 10 ай бұрын
There's only a handful of notable trainers who use physical attacks, though. Koga, Bruno, Lance, and the rival's Rhydon. Everything else is Special. Whereas not only Special type trainers abound in gen 1, but with the exception of fire and electric none of them are resisted by Rhydon.
@dstreetz91

Chansey's biggest advantage is being only super weak to physical and fighting type moves, which there is a lack thereof. Rhydon's advantage is that diverse moveset does give it perfect coverage since you never fight Chansey, which would be a nightmare for special rhydon until it got frozen particularly if it had it's signature move in softboiled. While Rhydon gets absolutely bashed by water/grass since quad weak and low special compounds the problem. I'm betting hydro pump from Gyarados always kills it if it hits, although Gyarados luckily has poor special since it's a physical mon it still has STAB. I knew it would be the only big issue for it would be that on the Lance fight because ice beam is 4x effective vs. dragonite and the rest of the team it's 2x at least with dragonair not having much special either.

If you're training for damage ranges, it might be worth considering how rounding interacts with the damage formula, making levels ending with 0, 3, 5, or 8 extra impactful. Could mean less resets.
@RBYPokemonChallenges
@RBYPokemonChallenges 10 ай бұрын
Yep, I know my damage rounding formula. However, I runs like this where a Pokemon simply has to grind a lot, it's often best to simply blackout grind against a Gym Leader or Rival provided we can easily beat 2-3 of their Pokemon. So you may see some irregular levels because I was just repeating attempts. Also, ai never grind wils pokemon

I love all the supplemental information for each side. Very nice! Interesting comparison. I'm not expert on the intricate stuff regarding early Pokemon games, but my gut says Rhydon wins. I played tons of early Pokemon when it came out in the US and learned a lot just by doing, even if I didn't know the formulas behind it. Poor late-game Rhydon, though; it seems like it'll be difficult just thinking about it quickly. It'll have a lot of obstacles type-wise.

That is a huge part of why the special set is SOOOO much better that physical sets in Gen 1: Status. The fact that anything that learns ice Beam has a 10% chance to completely eliminate one of the opponent's Pokemon on any given turn is truly OP. Like I mentioned at the end, without the move upgrade at the league I think Rhydon would have needed level 100, and without status, I think it definitely needs level 100

I guess that 45 base special is not that bad compared to 5 base attack (even at level 100 it didn't get to be a three digit number 😂😂😂). I think this challenge was really interesting to watch. Well done! =) One thing that kind of put me off throughout the video - unfortunately - was the way your voice is recorded. I like that it's loud and clear to hear, but the way words with letters that require you to push air out through your lips (b, d, f, k, p, t, s, z, etc) seem to be 'enhanced' in their distinctness. Lowering the volume of the video only did so much to help with that, so I thought I'd bring this up as some overall editing feedback.

Perfect video. Any chance you can say the time stamps for each Pokémon at each gym? For example it took chansey 15 minutes and 23 seconds for Brock while it only took rhydon 11 minutes and 10 seconds.

I'm so happy to see that my physical chansey without softboiled made the cut, and I expected rhydon to win from the start, after all chansey only has 5 attack where rhydon has over 40 special, like yes it gonna die to a horsea but it will output about 4 to 5 times the damage chansey can, but at the end of it chansey was way closer to rhydon's time than I expected, really great runs and video, I loved it, great job like always RBY ❤

I think a lot of people underestimated Chansey, but it's special bulk, faster level up speed, and the fact that Level is a big part of damage calculations made this one not as bad as most would expect. There will be more Chansey shenanigans upcoming, planning to record something over the weekend
@ningyoangel551

@RBYPokemonChallenges well I expected it to be possible, yes, but seems like that even myself underestimated no softboiled physical chansey a tiny bit, like I did expect it to not be that bad due to the reasons you already said, aka special and exp, but yeah way closer run than I though. And you're saying that there will be more chansey shenanigans, but have you still come up with anything for the other 2 kings of OU, snorlax and Taurus? BTW I think a special only golem run would be interesting, for the only reason being to compare it to rhydon, after all they are both staples on OU tiers, and some people prefer using golem over rhydon. I'm saying this but I don't even remember how many special moves golem knows xD Anyhow I love your work, keep the great content and remember to always have fun and not force yourself to do something you don't like ❤️

I remember when I ran a team that had a Charmeleon, Nidoking, Sandslash, Arcanine, and a special Rhydon and special Marowak. I was just trying to zip through the game for some reason, I don't remember what, and all the Pokémon were heavily overleveled, so I didn't really have issues (I'm pretty sure they were ported from my boxes on Stadium). I'm now super curious to see how things would change with max DVs. These two in particular seem like they'd be good candidates for testing what kind of impact DVs have, because A) they have low scores at the baseline but B) they have movesets that have a lot of potential upsides even with the mismatch with the stats. (Contrasted to something like Mewpoo, whose moveset won't appreciably benefit from DVs, or Godkarp, who relatively breezed through even at 0 DVs so there's not much higher to go).

Found your channel recently from the Mewpoo video and I gotta say you got some really interesting ideas! I also like how you score the runs out of 100 points, but I am wondering about the 'TM' and 'broken TM' points. You deduct a point for teaching TM moves? That seems like kind of a moot thing to lose points for since you HAVE to teach TMs to progress through the game. And I have no idea what broken TMs are?
@Canaris4
@Canaris4 10 ай бұрын
Broken TM's are moves that anyone can learn. Bide, Toxic, and Double Team. Bide is on that list because there are a lot of pokemon that can't beat the game without resorting to that move.
@RBYPokemonChallenges
@RBYPokemonChallenges 10 ай бұрын
Do on the channel to date I have done 18 Pokemon that beat the game without a single TM move on Minimum Battles (no optional battles grinding). It's for this reason that I deduct points for TMs, because for the truly best of the best they are completely unnecessary. As for broken TMs, they are moves that can be exploited for major advantages, moves that all Pokemon can learn (except those that can't learn any TMs), and moves that lead to really unoriginal strategies. Don't worry, this will be explained even more in the upcoming 4k special, where we'll be using broken TMs to do some truly silly things in the game

Gen 1 "Smart AI" does very weird things. In the Rhydon fight, it doesn't differentiate between 'resisted' and 'ineffective', so it will just perfectly randomize its moves against Rhydon.

If you think about it, chances had less of a chance to cause statics effects unlike Rhydon. Rhydon could burn causing lowered attacks, paralyzed which can skip a turn, and freeze that will stop the other pokemon from fighting. Chansey could only paralyze another pokemon. So I give it to Chansey for being mainly strong out there, sacrificing her life to be a physical fighter.

Hm. I think there may be a strat to speed up levelling fo Rhydon in the Surge section. Dugtrio can be farmed for XP and guaranteed encounters in the Cave; since Rhy's defense is so massive, he should have no trouble beating the Trios, and they're worth a massive amount of XP. The cost, however, is Repels, but I would imagine the XP yield is much faster than the trainers to the East.

I knew it was gonna be rhydon. I'm not really used to how yellow plays vs redblue. I imagine they'd be similar, but you'll mimic night shade instead of lick on Agatha. I think Erika would be way harder for rhydon. since you can skip her it would never be that bad, but Koga would be impossible for chansey with self destruct. I think in yellow the gym leaders are easier, but the e4 is harder.

I generally agree with this. I think Koga, Blaine and Giovanni are significantly hard Gym Leaders in Yellow but the earlier gym leaders and rivals are much harder in Red/Blue. So the trade-off is generally an easier early game for a much harder mid-late game in Yellow. Self Destruct would have destroyed Chansey though, so I imagine more lopsided results in Red/Blue

In my honest opinion Chansey should’ve had Double-Edge in replace of either Body Slam or Hyper Beam while Rhydon should have Fire Blast & Blizzard instead of Flamethrower & Ice Beam throughout the game (I would’ve kept Thunderbolt throughout the game though.) I can agree that adding Double-edge might have helped in some spots. I did the stronger moves at the Elite Four, but if I were to "optimize" Rhydon, I'd definitely add Fire Blast and Blizzard much earlier. Thunder is absolutely required for beating Lorelei at leas than Lv 100 too, but could likely be put off until then.

My prediction is that despite the raw stats, or maybe BECAUSE of them, Rhydon has the advantage in both distinctions. While Chansey has the most incredible HP in the game and a terrific special stat to get to tank enemy special moves with, it has pitiful attack and defense, so it can't hit hard (STAB helps a lot, especially STAB Gen 1 mechanics Hyper Beam, but that can only do so much when it's just Normal moves off Chansey attack) AND it can't take hits well on the physical side (but thankfully its HP can cushion a lot more than the opponent). RHYDON has the opposite problem, but to a lesser degree, considering Rhydon also has a RESPECTABLE HP stat even though nothing compares to Chansey, and its physical defense at least is also good, which, even though Rhydon's physical weaknesses seem less exploitable, big moves like Earthquake and Submission and even ordinary tackles and take downs and quick attacks scattered throughout the game will help. Now, its Special being so weak means it can't take hits well specially either, AND it has so many special weaknesses including two 4x weaknesses, but it can at least make use of its incredible move pool with options and most importantly status. Rhydon's coverage means it not only has nothing immune to it, it can actually capitalize on weaknesses AND it can get lucky status, either FREEZE, paralysis, or burn, any of which, especially FREEZE could be crucial. Chansey can get paralysis on non-Normal types, but it will NEVER hit anything super-effectively without also taking recoil, and it will not be as crucial a status as FREEZE.

@@RBYPokemonChallenges What I didn't even consider, but was probably the biggest determining factor in that gap was what you mentioned at the end about being able to upgrade the special moves. The jump from consistency with the 95 power 100 accuracy moves, to the 120 power moves when you no longer need consistency in accuracy and just need flat out stopping power really made Rhydon's job easier, otherwise it may have needed to get much closer to level 100.
