1. Accounting and Finance (specialized field for stable jobs) 2. MIS (management information system, coding + busniess, very versitile degree) 3. supply chain management (Amazon has good supply chain management so your items will deliver within 1-3 business days) 4. International business ( good major to couple with a language major/minor) 5. Marketing (you get good pay by working in good tech companies, not so good pay if not, mediocre degree) 6. Management (very general) 7. Business and Administration (super general, maybe a waste of time to learn about general business) 8. Human Resources (HR is a great position but no HR degree is needed to get into the field) 9. Entrepreneurship (you can't learn this in a classroom, you can only learn it by doing it, so it is a very useless degree) Thanks for the info Lynette!

Totally agree with so much you said! This would've been such a useful video for me before going to college. I did marketing as well & agree, it is not a necessary degree to do marketing. I don't regret it thought because it's a role that is in every industry. I was undecided for a really long time & still don't have a specific "dream job" but marketing is a great way to explore different fields and get good knowledge of it. I also agree an entrepreneurship major is probably not necessary, but my university offered a certificate or minor in it as well. I got a certificate in it because I had extra electives to fill anyway and it wasn't many classes. That I will say is very beneficial, honestly I think in any major or industry (even if you aren't a business major). I'd highly recommend that if you have the option

I have a supply chain/logistics degree and I believe it’s a very useful yet very underrated business degree. Supply chain/ logistics jobs are always going to be there. These jobs for the most part pay above average. With the move away from traditional brick and mortar stores, these jobs are especially important in the digital age of online shopping that we live in. Supply chain is so important that it’s the reason why Apple is delaying so many new products this year. Good logistical planning can mean the difference between gaining/losing customers or good/poor stock performance or having/not having a competitive advantage over the competition.

Hi Lynette, you mentioned that a marketing degree is great, but it depends on the industry that you work in. Would you say that that is similar with an international business degree? Also, if that's the case, how would someone with an IB major best position themselves to be competitive within the business field? Would minoring in something related to tech be helpful to be more specialized/competitive or do you feel as if to minor in tech is not competitive enough compared to someone with a "tech-like" major? Obvs, it's probably not, but hopefully you get what I'm trying to ask.
@LynetteAdkins
@LynetteAdkins 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely - I should've mentioned that just about all of these majors depend on the industry you end up going into. For all of these (especially IB), getting internships and networking throughout college is key to setting yourself up for success. And yes, I think minoring in tech could be helpful, just remember that experience beats a degree, so if you can make connections early and get an internship in the tech industry, that will better. Some ppl add tech minors and get so overwhelmed with work that they put off networking/recruiting until too late in their college career.

You're proving my point about your other videos that disparage getting a business degree, "They are not worth anything." It is unlikely you would know all these dimensions of business you list in this video if you hadn't gotten a business degree. Different students leverage their time and investment in an undergrad biz degree differently. But I am impressed by the broad world of business you described in this video. Your degree was far more worth than what the titles of some of your videos let on about. International Business - you need to learn at least one language, Otherwise you are lacking in skills. HR majors promote themselves in business(!) I avoid the HR group with all my might in any company I have worked in. Employees that fail at other jobs are put in HR - think about that, the state of social justice warrior companies. There are excellent Entrepreneurship programs where you meet important people and get Critical Thinking experience - you are right at the end - these are just your opinions from a sample of one - that is, UT.

Amazon is just fulfillment centers more like warehousing, they don't do a complete supply chain. Although they are a part of the supply chain. However, Supply chain jobs aren't easy to get. Even in Developed nations, they look for experience or extra certifications or really good internships. Logistics is just part of the supply chain, but there is more to the supply chain and sometimes it can be overwhelming. Again the opportunity varies from country to country.

From what I've seen, advertising is more creative focused while marketing is more focused on the business side of reaching customers. So advertising would be planning commercials/social media ads while marketing would be working more closely with sales to plan events, email campaigns, etc.

Hey, hope you read my comment. I’m currently studying digital media at my first year and it’s basically “web design, graphic design, photography, crating videos and a bit of digital marketing” I was thinking about changing my major to business because I think graphic design and these skills are easy to learn online and they are based on self studying, and I think everyone is getting into this tech world and starting to be good at these skills. So do you think it’s better if I go for a business degree and also learn these skills and take some courses on my free time?
@orazon9388
@orazon9388 Жыл бұрын
Hey there. Just a little reminder that learning Graphic Design at Uni is not at all a waste. It's only if you're only looking for drawing improvement, whereas in fact, the networks formed with professors and students within campus will help you a lot later in pursuit of a serious career in GD. That is not to mention the fact that the curriculum is already chosen carefully and chronologically for you to learn, and lots of honest feedbacks during your time there. Good luck!

I know that this comment probably wont be liked, but I strongly think that in order for you degree or any qualification you must have the work experience to match it. A few years a go I did a Cert IV in Frontline Management, and I have supervision experience. But when I go for jobs being a supervisor etc I don't get them. The feed back I always get is that the other candidate had better work experience. My conclusion now is that if your studying you should also be working other wise it will all be theory and no practise and your qualification may not give you the opportunities that you dreamt about.

Please help me choose between Supply chain Management (SCM) and International Business Management (IBM). I’ve received the admission for SCM for the Jan2021 intake but due to the COVID situations, I wasn’t ready to take up the online classes and deferred it to May2021 intake. Unfortunately, the SCM program is suspended for that intake and they’ve automatically deferred it to Sep2021 intake, which is very long for me to wait. So I referred to the college website for the available course for the May2021 intake and found IBM somewhat similar to SCM, like around 20-30%. But from my research, all were of the opinion that SCM is much reliable than IBM. All I’m worried about is that if I wait till Sept, I’ve to stay jobless till then, and if I choose for the May intake, the wait will be less. Regarding my work experience, it is 5.5 years (2yrs in India + 3.5yrs in Kuwait) in the Planning Department. I’m a Mechanical Engineer graduate. So, can you suggest if IBM will make any sense to get an opportunity in Canada or should I wait till Sept2021 to move on with SCM?

@Ledesma184th 3 жыл бұрын
My experience: Current MBA student. It depends on your overall situation. Having the chance to walkout with an MBA after 5 years undergrad is not necessarily a bad thing. However, keep in mind that if you lack work experience you are going to be in this strange position of being overqualified for entry level but not exactly mid level just yet. Most people recommend work experience as the combination of work experience and the degree will usually boost you up to senior level positions. Depending on the field you plan to go into make sure you have projects/experiences to prove you belong at the mid level, or sell yourself humbly to get an entry level job thus getting your foot in the door.

Accounting is the most employable. But satisfaction is low. The people I see with greatest satisfaction has been supply chain. While accounting majors become accountants (usually) those in supply chain have various titles. They don't find jobs as quickly out the gate as accountants but their starting pay seems to be higher. MIS is the other one.

Maribel Lopez yes. They're not hollow degrees as in they have a lot of interesting things but in terms of jobs you won't use them. The few jobs that you can really use them, they want Phd's and those are in banking called quants. Economics only useful for federal reserve but not many jobs there. Finance degree teaches you things for jobs that don't require a specific degree in banking where they train you. FP&A jobs or corporate financial planning and analysis is all managerial accounting. There are many areas of accounting like financial reporting, tax, internal audit, external audits, advisory, etc... there's many areas of MIS like business systems, data analytics. Both you need to know accounting and mis so it's better to major in both.
