I use plenty of the ESD safe automotive Q200 capacitors, close to a hundred per engine controller. I use Flexiterm on larger caps - 1206 and larger, usually automotive standard caps on 0603. Thermal cycling was most sensitive on BGAs and QFNs far before even the non-flex automotive qualified caps, I avoid those and try to stick with QFP and TSSOP.

Amazing that there is so much theory behind that and most of my circuits have caps chosen by a rule of thumb, price, availability, PCB footprint and work anyway :D

Wish I had access to this years ago. Had to learn this on the fly... Oh the pleasure when the EMS puts X5R instead of NP0 on your analog filters... days of searching for the issue

Thanks for reminding me of the DC bias problem. That was exactly the problem that turned out to be causing the problems I was having right now. I was using a 100V X7R 1µF to enable communication between 2 controllers that are 48V apart. Turns out, at 50V, the capacitance decreased by 75%, causing the voltage levels to get outside of comm specs too quickly, losing connection mid transmission. Will use film caps now as too high capacitance at 0V would cause turn on issues.

Thumbs up for another great video, but I would have liked to hear more about piezoelectric effects of type 2 ceramic capacitors because this is an important noise source in many products that I am working on...

Great video, thank you. But it would still be interesting to see the difference in ESL for different case sizes of common ceramic capacitors.

One very important parameter as well, is the frequency vs max voltage parameter. This is very often overlooked an can be very important in switching applications or other AC applications (like audio or other data acquisition situations). Especially for film capacitors, this can be an issue.

Capacitors are so much more complicated than most people think. I would like to be better at determining the tolerances and requirements for a given design without doing a lot of trial and error testing

@@dougphillips5686 Depends on what it’s used to pronounce 0. Americans use “oh” for 0 with numbers. But they “have” to use “zero” when letters and numbers are mixed, but they don’t. As in many other cases they tend to short everything, and from “zeer-oh” only “oh” remains ;)

Seems like this conductive epoxy should replace solder and then any electronic component would be better protected from cracking. I guess that could hurt repairability though.
