The Toyota GR86 Performance Pack and Honda Civic Type R are two cars that produce performance in two totally different ways. Under the hood of the GR86 is a 2.4L flat-4 mated to a 6-speed manual gear box and the Type R has a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 mated to a 6-speed gearbox. GR86 BABY!!! We have one, and it's super badass. They're both great cars, but RWD is a whole different thing. Tint takes care of any glare, and we had that done the first week. We had the whole nose and a few other parts wrapped in clear film, too. Mirror caps and touch zones on the rear spoiler. It's always fun and doesn't hesitate to overtake and pass in traffic. BUT, it is nice to have 4 doors and more space.😅😂😊

@@garethhoffmann9046 lol well 3UZ is a 4.3 L Toyota/Lexus V8...bjt more than a "mod" but many first gen 86/FRS/BRZ owners have done the swap. I personally owned 2 first gen 86 for 10 years. These cars are best enjoyed stock, or very lightly modded like wheels/tires/suspension/brakes/exhaust, but if you have money and time, plus broken chassis, it is a fun car for an engine swap..

You can have the dealership turn off the ASC by hooking it up to their computer or you can spend 5 minutes and DIY it. Pop off the panel on the passenger side by the door and unplug the ASC, zip tie up the cable so it doesn't rattle and voilà, you're done.

@RaitisRides I agree but unfortunately it isn't. Now if an owner happens to have Techstream then they can do it through software on their own. There's also a company that has an OBD dongle that will allow you to turn it off along with a lot of other stuff, mainly it gives you auto locking doors.

The GR86 will put more smiles on your face per mile driven. I am still deciding if I should supercharge the GR86 to make it faster but not crazy desperate about it. I may just drive up to the end of its factory warranty and then start adding force induction.

Good and helpful information on this deep dive. One thing that stands out to me is what a good job the Honda people did in turning a nice economical compact car, the Civic, into a high-performance sports car. The GR 86 is only a sports car. It is ridiculous that you can't just turn off the pumped in noise if you don't want to hear it. If you're spinning, you're not winning your just impressing the wrong people. I've got to remember that Joe.

I'm with you on the EV thing. The Ionic 5 N is currently the best effort from an EV maker to mimic the sound of an "ice" car. But I'm old school. To me proper driver involvement is the key. Personally, I think Porsche is taking a risk with the EV replacements for the Boxster/Cayman. I don't care if it will do 0-60 at the speed of light. No EV motor can ever replace the melodious sound of a Porsche flat six. Same thing for Lotus. Once they retire the Emira with an EV replacement it will be a sad day.

Choosing between these two is not so easy. Ultimately, I went for an Acura type s (over type r as I could get at list price), but the transmission/powerunit was a big factor in my choice. I just didn’t feel the 86brz flat 4 was special enough. Plus I am lucky to own a Miata as a second car so that factored also. The type s/r is a quite a different beast when you drive it hard being front wheel drive. As Mr. R points out, getting all that power down in 1st gear isn’t straightforward. In fact you have to ease the power in otherwise it will squirm those front wheels, especially on a damp road. Also, if you are really aggressive with the throttle when on the move and those front wheels are not straight you will get a lot of torque steer, which can be a bit unnerving at first. Under normal driving though the Honda hides all these traits very well. IMO If handling/driving dynamics is your main priority go 86brz. If the power train feel/ engineering and some practically is important then go type r/s.

Faster car with the touch of luxury that makes the daily nicer to drive. You miss the manual but I'm not crazy for one in Boston traffic after driving an 8th gen si in it. The gr86 motor is very limited in power due to the motor, drivetrain, and transmission. The type r is still fwd and it leaves a lot to be desired. Most high hp and high torque civics go awd swap anyways so these cars are really meant to be enjoyed semi stock with not too many power mods.

I traded in my FL5 for a GR86 Premium performance pack. I’m so happy with my decision. I don’t want to bash the Type R. It is an awesome vehicle, but it’s a very serious car. It’s not that playful and the FWD just ruined it for me. GR86 is exactly the opposite. So playful, so fun and so much character. Raiti said it, “GR86 is pure, and connected”. 86 is one of the last affordable, lightweight, true sports cars.

I have enjoyed your Raiti's Rides for years. Great Job! Please comment on the new Mercedes Benz CLE 300 4 cylinder automatic coupe. I look forward to your full review but I greatly appreciate to hear your immediate comments, impressions, and recommendations. You reviews are highly informative and entertaining

GR86 is more fun and looks better. If I had kids I'd get ITS.

Type R indeed. I have an FRS since 2013 and having a sporty 4 doors is very practical.

I ended up with a BRZ. Would had loved a Type R but 10-15k more and no heated seats sucked. Type S is way too expensive, wish Honda didn’t raised the price so much between generations.

You said the gearbox was second only to the 911. Where does the Miata's gearbox fit in?
