The one benefit I would say is that the colleges, because some are recognized for excellent flight instruction, to have fast tracks to the airlines. I know Western Michigan I think either Purdue or EMU have fast tracks, they all have the same 3. But what they do it guarantee you a job at a regional and after you finish your schooling, which can be sophomore year, you are immediately hired by them as long as you have a 3.0 and 250. So you work as a flight instructor in college and you are hired by the airline, Endevour is one which is Delta's regional and you get benefits. Also your guaranteed and interview with Delta once you reach the requirements.
@pilotrserra Жыл бұрын
All the airlines have “cadet programs” now. There is no such thing as “fast track”. That is a marketing gimmick. The campus is expensive and doesn’t benefit anyone…but paying college administrators big salaries. It is crazy expensive

After high school I didn't really have a good plan for what I was going to do. I went to college and got a degree in math. I'm just wondering (since you didn't directly mention it) if you just need ANY degree or should it specifically be a flight related degree? Would a math degree spark any interest in an airline? I've been out of school for a year now and have been looking into becoming a pilot, however I just can't afford to go back to school at this point. Yes I know that it is an expensive road to become a pilot either way, but I can at least still work a job while getting my private pilots and other needed hours.

I can confirm this. In 1999, after 15 hours in a Cessna 152, I went to a Skywest® (Western Australia) careers evening night. Philosophy was one of the acceptable degrees. I almost fell off my stool🍺🥃😀. I had run out of money by then and continued my bus driving career, lived cheap and traveled both Australia and round the world eating steak, pizza, fish & chips, chilli con carne, aloo gobi etc. I can't complain. Cheers 🥃 from Melbourne, Australia - Guyana via the Dominican Republic my next port of call having quit my job in Adelaide following the covid19 downturn $$$.

UND or Purdue if you can get in. Times have changed considerably since this video was made. Large carriers like UA and even Emirates have their own flight training programs where after 18-24 months, you're flying a commercial aircraft making incredible money. What will 100% get you in is you have your Aviation degree from one of these schools for sure. UND will save you 100K+ for aviation and flight hours as you'll be flying and gaining hours while you're in school and give you a 4 year degree to boot. If you can deal with the cold and crappy weather of North Dakota which you'll have to do if you ever fly an airplane anyway, then the next 30-40 years of your wonderful Aviation career will be like winning lotto.

Do what I did. Finish high school, and assuming you have the funding, go to a flight academy. I attended flight safety in vero beach, and starting the instructors course in a week, been here about 15 months. After im an instructor ill teach while im in college, so i hopefully have the hours i need by the time im out. I felt that was the smartest way to go. spend 4 years of college teaching instead of waiting to teach until your doing your masters.

I would get a degree that provides a backup career, engineering and avionics are good choices, there isn't really a certain degree that gets you noticed by an airline, it just checks the box. To be an air force pilot, you need to have a bachelors degree and be accepted into pilot school. It is a 10 year commitment once training is completed, do not try to use the air force to enhance your resume for the airlines or to get free flight training, you will never get a pilot slot.

There are FAR part 141 programs at some county colleges which result in an associate degree with a commercial pilot license. Then there are various cheap ways to complete the credits for a 4-year degree. Seems this would cut time/costs significantly.
@askcaptainscott8 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If you can get college credit for your license and ratings your two steps ahead of everyone else. Local community or county colleges are inexpensive, except for the flight training part, compared to colleges like Embry Riddle. Here's a question a bit out of the box. I'm in the military, i'm 30, potentially about to get out. I'm currently qualified on the KC-10 as a Flight Engineer (enlisted). as far as I know my hours (about 3,000) will not transfer as we're not rated. I'm looking at potentially doing a "vocational" or 2 year program to go from essentially nothing (no PPL) to an ATP. there's a few programs around here I can do this. Now, the reason I'd like to actually do this through a degree program is due to the Post-9/11 GI Bill which would pay me as a full time student, saving me thousands of dollars. I have some college, but no degree (yet, that is, am working towards Community College of Air Force Associates) are there any schools in the Philadelphia area you'd recommend looking into? It may be a few years for me to get started, as I need to be a full time student and out of the military. also, what about more entry level airlines, say going for ExpressJet or Cape Air for a few years, then applying for Jetblue? Could not having a 4 year degree be overcome by having more experience?

Question, would it be helpful to possibly pursue a career as a flight attendant before you pursue one as a pilot? I would asume it would be helpful for networking purposes and to help get your foot in the door with an airline.
@askcaptainscott8 жыл бұрын
If it's with the airline you want to ultimately fly for and it get's you in the door, youd get an interview once your qualified flight time wise. I tried getting hired by FedEx as a driver a million years ago but when they asked what my prior work experience was and I said pilot, they knew what I was up to right away. I tried the bag handler route by another airline and got the same treatment. No job!. You'd think they'd be impressed you tried getting in anyway you can but apparently this was not the case for me.

I have a weird question for you, I've always dreamed about becoming a commercial pilot, but i was born profoundly deaf. HOWEVER, I have had Cochlear Implants that allow me to hear as good or even better than some people. I know this because recently I was tested by a hearing school in St. Louis. The FAA said that my license would be "Not Valid for Flights Requiring the Use of Radio" (14 CFR section 61.13). But, that is for people who are deaf and with no hearing devices such as Cochlear Implants, which is why I was wanting to ask you if there was any chance if i did pass the normal hearing test.h I was able to hear all frequencies of sounds required by the FAA. Your professional opinion on this would be awesome.

You could get a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA). I don't know how you would go about doing it exactly in your case, but you can search SODA of the FAA website or Google it and a guide will pop up. I think you just have to show you are able to use the radios and probably some other stuff. Good luck.I'll see if the link will go in here www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/app_process/general/appeals/soda/

The best way to be a military pilot is to get in to the academies, Air Force Academy, Annapolis, etc. This will get you an officer position and college free of charge, you have to work hard in high school though. The other way is to go to a college with ROTC and get the ROTC scholarship and apply for a pilot slot via the branch you want.

Getting a degree in aerospace while in college is a requirement to get an internship with an airline. This, in turn, will guarantee and interview with that respective airline. But, like Captain Scott said, it's cheaper to go an alternate route.

+Randy Carl I'm 19 and studying commercial aviation at the University of North Dakota. I also have my private pilots license

Tuckthemuck a internship with airline , that does not mean anything lol. People get so far ahead down the road , all that matters right now is meeting the 1500 hr requirement , that’s the hurdle . If you meet the hrs the regionals are hiring , sign on bonus everything . These ATP type schools , all they do is charge you a substantial amount of money , yea you get ratings quickly , but with marginal training . All you do spend a lot of money , there is no advantage , same with getting a degree in aviation . In fact I would advise against it , unless you know for a fact if you can’t fly some day , you will want to stay in aviation industry.

Good morning captain. What do you recommend in my situation? I am 48, I have 436 TT, Commercial Multi Single Instrument Rated. Planning to go to Epic Aviation Academy this summer to get my CFI & CFII. Do I have chance to fly for major in my situation?

Shameless plug for K-State @ Salina.. Not the greatest town, but the school is phenomenal with provides many networking opportunities around the state of Kansas and the aviation community. Private and Instrument done at KSU with Commercial and CFI soon to follow. Good luck to everyone!

Do you think they will care if you have an online bachelor's degree? I'm thinking about a program that gives you an associates degree and a commercial license at the end. After, you can get a bachelor's in aviation online.

Make sure it's an accredited degree otherwise the airlines wont like it. Ya, the online thing is a great way to go.

How do people get upgraded from turbo prop to turbo engine planes. I never really understood that. Is there a special process or is it like learning any other aircraft.

It's too bad he didn't mention one obvious benefit of doing a degree in a related field is you'll have a deeper understanding of aviation, hopefully that will make you a better pilot who can make better decisions...

question: with the FAA offering a restricted ATP for reduced flight hours, is majoring in aviation a good choice? (1000 v 1500 hours) or should I stick to a business degree and flight instruct until I meet the 1500 hour requirement.
@jayr8890 Жыл бұрын
what did you end up doing? I'm considering taking a business degree and flight instructing.

I know that the airlines accept any degree but if you have a degree in let's say Psychology and another applicant has a degree in Aerospace Engineering, will that applicant have a higher chance of getting hired?
@kevinschram76676 жыл бұрын
Sully (of US Air Flight 1549) has a master's degree in industrial psychology. Psychology actually plays a big role in Crew Resource Management- ie: how the flight crew works together in stressful situations.

It's a pain from what i heard! You have to get your rank up high to fly for military such as air force! The best way if you wanna fly is to have them pay for your flight training!
