Reasons to stick with a brand that has worked for you: -- Warranty: A warranty is only as good as the company that honors it. If you roll the dice with some other brand, and you have an issue that is covered under the warranty, what will you do if you can't reach whoever it is to act on your claim? Some companies make you jump through endless hoops. Some companies bury their warranty procedure (no phone number, and a link to submit a claim is nowhere to be found). Some companies will quickly resolve your warranty claim. Some companies will drag it out for weeks or months -- hoping that you give up. Can you afford to have that lengthy down time? Some companies will simply deny your claim, with a BS reason -- such as you misused your computer, or you did not protect it from electrical surges, etc. Good luck fighting that. -- The parts: Yes, these companies basically get parts from elsewhere (as our host showed us). But not all parts are the same. For many people, if the computer turns on and runs smoothly, they are happy. But what happens when you realize that you need an upgrade (perhaps more RAM)? Then you find out that your motherboard is already maxed out. Or, you have no available RAM slots, requiring you to discard your existing RAM sticks for higher capacity RAM sticks. Then will you spend the time to try and sell the RAM sticks that you removed? Or you want to add a 10Gb network card, and you do not have an available PCIe slot? Etc. -- The workmanship (or Quality Control): Did someone in the factory run a jungle of cables in your box? Or did they do a neat job of cable management? Cable management affects air flow. Air flow affects heat dissipation. Obstructed air flow results in higher temperatures, and will likely shorten the life of whatever parts are being insufficiently cooled. Did they properly seat your video card, and all of the power leads from your power supply to your motherboard and GPU? Any cables ready to come loose? Any fans not screwed in properly? .......... When you decide to purchase a computer, you should probably stick to a brand you trust. Or, do your homework. Read reviews and see if there are any common complaints, including customer service. If you do your homework, you will land a quality computer at a competitive price. But it all hinges on how technical you are, and how much time you have to do research, or if you find research enjoyable or tedious. If you are not technical, then stick with a brand that has served you well.

Something I found out a few years ago - There are different grades of computers. Consumer grade which has the most issues - Commercial Grade which has the least issues. And of course Military Grade of which we can let the Military figure this out. Many Manufacture if not all will have the first 2

Great video Scott. I admit If I have a brand that works I tend to get it again to avoid issues. Of course if you go on line you will find many people hating on whatever computer you love. I went back to building my own because I can choose the components, including manufacturer. I tend towards ASUS motherboards but have used MSI, Gigabyte, and Intel. I have had the best luck with Toshiba laptops but recently moved to Alienware.

ALL my desktops was from different components never bought an assembled one. And this made my desktops up to 20% cheaper with the same computing power. As for a few laptops they are all from different brands because I always look at specs and reviews. And I like to upgrade computer few times before is becomes obsolete to new games and goes on the shelf.

I used to buy Dell for the financing. Since then I discovered I can build it my self and not be limited to what a big corporation allows me to use. I have never had a problem with their desktops but their laptops are a whole different result.

Any experience with VAIO laptops? Not those under the Sony brand, but the small apparently independent company which seemingly has continued manufacturing computers after Sony stopped doing so. I have read some positive reviews although there doesn't seem to be much demand, atleast not here in the US. However, the reason for that may very well be due to a lack of marketing/promotion here. There IS a difference between brands. It's how each maker integrates the various parts, and what software, mostly junk, they include. Also, reliability ratings, differ considerably. I buld my own.

Good comparison for the average user. I am different though. My dad and family were Ford people, My Mom's family where Chevy. I bought a 1976 Toyota Corolla SR5 2 dr. coup Not long after, my Dad and brother bought Toyotas. I just sold my 2002 Acura TL I had for 19 years. Best car I ever had, and now drive on 08 Acura TL. 'I have never had a Dell, but I had worked on them. I had a friend who was a Gateway owner. After he wanted to upgrade and found out the power supply was insufficient and was proprietary, he had me build his machines. Then I started him on building his own. My first machine was in 1995, and I found a trusted local vendor to build what I wanted. I have been building my own since 1996. Note: That machine I built in 1996 is still running. It's a Tyan Tomcat 4 Single server board with the HX chipset that supports 512 MB of RAM, 233MMX pentium, 64 Mb 70ns EDO, ATI all in wonder pro w/ 8 Mb ram, Soundblaster AWE64 Gold, IBM 20 Gg DTLA 307030 running DOS 6.22, WFWG 3.11, Win95B OSR2, Win 98 SE and NT 4 SP6, by way of System Commander software, connected to a 19 inch Viewsonic Graphics Pro monitor. I always use Uninterruptible Power Supplies to filter the power. I still fire it up once in a while and play DOOM, DOOM 2 or Duke Nukem 3D Atomic. I always look at chip sets first, then boards that have that chip set. I download the manuals and review BIOS and driver updates. I narrow to under 4 boards and get the best bang for the buck. I always use a power supply that will exceed the maximum expectations for upgrades. My most recent build is a Gigabyte X570S AORUS MASTER, Rysen 8 7800X3D with aThermalright Peerless Assassin 120 CPU Air Cooler, Kingston FURY Beast RGB 32GB, 1000 Watt EVGA PSU, XFX Speedster SWFT319 ,Radeon™ RX 6800 with 16GB GDDR6, Four 2Tb Samsung NVMe's, in a Thermaltake Level 20 MT case, 32" Monitor and Klipsch 2.1 Promedia speakers. I bought the X570S as I have had active cooling chipsets in the past, then when the fan dies, it overheats. I steer clear of active cooling boards.

The weight that I put on any given computer is that of standards - like ATX as an example. Certain manufacturers have mirror image motherboards and / or non standard connectors. Thus the case no longer supports the standard ATX motherboard and / or power supply. This limits my ability to maintain or upgrade that system and I've learned to avoid them. I've built my own systems from the days of math co-processors and do trust brands like Gigabyte and their ultra-durable motherboards based on many generation of good service. Does this make me a bad consumer?

Yes, Apple is different from the other PC manufactures because they make both the hardware and software. What I don't like is how restricted Apple is putting everything behind a garden wall. Unlike WIndows, Apple doesn't its operating system to be installed on any computer as they license it and don't allow you to make a custom Mac, while you can build a custom PC with Windows. I think Apple does this because they control the hardware, not the just software. Also, Apple doesn't want to let you repair your Mac and made their newer computers less upgradeable

Some time ago I bought a year-end clearance model laptop, with a 2 year warranty. It went BSOD within a week. The warranty refunded the purchase price. But the laptop got Windows reinstalled (over and over) for several years before it overheated and failed beyond repair.

My 1st computer, I bought with a local builder, who allowed you to select all the parts. I went with top name $130 on the cd drive, & it broke in a year. I replaced it with the cheap Lite-on for $35 & it lasted for years. This video was pretty wild- to remember the truth of brands. My last 2 laptops were bought 'renewed,' saving a lot of $$ (so less loss if something goes wrong), & had no lengthy warranty. (I've had no problems except Lenovo yoga; with bad hinges that turned it into a desktop / no move/ no open=close). I've learned to replace/ upgrade computer parts myself (laptops: battery, cmos battery, keyboard after a spill... desktop- in the past, replacing cd /dvd drives; hard drive on desktop; usb cards, etc). It's especially ez w/ all the specific video 'how to.' So much is just plug in to motherboard; screw in place; reset bios button (or unplug cmos battery & push cmos reset button next to it). Lenovo is great on one thing: specific repair videos. I find that better than a warranty. I can buy a part & do it myself, wearing my electrostatic charger clip bracelet.

The brand names I purchase are dependent on final use and prior experience. For every day normal use, I prefer Dell Precision laptops, Optiplex desktops. For 24/7 heavy compute loads, I prefer HP Z Stations and Proliant servers. I do believe Dell, HP, etc do design their equipment and farm out to actual manufacturing side. From what I have been told by those in the know, design considerations and component quality varies from brand to brand. A good example is Nvidia with the Geforce and Quadro GPU's. I was in the industry where 24/7/365 and reparability was demanded. Great videos, great presentation as well

To me it depends on what features they offer on their systems. Before the demise of Compaq, I would always buy their computers because HP and Compaq were top of the line back in their day. Nowadays I just build my future computers.

Dell Premium Support Plus which includes Accidental Damage and Predictive Support was $199 for 3 years discounted from $359. For 4 years it was $569 because there was no discount for 4 years. The 3 year warranty seems good to me. Is there a brand with a better warranty policy?

I generally agree, but with 3 factors: 1. Some brands have a lower profit margin and the consumer may get "more bang for the buck" at the same PC price. For example with brand A we get an IPS screen and with brand B we get an OLED, or we get an i7 CPU instead of i5. 2. Not all parts are created equal. We may or may not care whether the CPU is from Intel or AMD, or the memory is from Micron or Samsung, but in some cases it does matter who makes a part. 3. When a PC manufacturer buys parts from component makers, it's not always totally hands-off. They still get involved in defining the specs and in doing some quality control and acceptance. I work in high-tech manufacturing and when a company buys something, it's not always a simple commercial transaction. It's true that there is more done for a pro or business PC than for a $500 PC, but in my experience, it's not always nothing.

I have a differing opinion about warranties and the explanation of an incident involving Best Buy years ago would be way too long. Personally I believe most warranties are not worth the paper or digital page they are written on. It's the company and their reputation of support that should really determine whether a warranty is justified. Also, if you are tech savvy and able to service your own system, then I definitely do not think warranties are necessary. BTW, I run Linux so people need to know if their warranty only covers hardware and not the software as it used to be on a Dell, Gateway, HP, etc..., back in the day.

Customer Service, that is what you should be buying. But it is very hard to know how good that customer service will be until you actually need it. Dell I always found to be OK if it worked. Back in the day, 20+ years ago Dell had a rep for too many DOAs. But warranties, are only ever as good as the customer service behind them. So over the years I have built up a list of Brands that I would rather not buy. And a much shorter list of ones that I would. I trust these Brands to at least listen and try to fix any issues.

Another point to be made is...just because you are buying a "brand name" computer, doesn't necessarily mean that you are getting "brand name" parts. Larger prefab computer companies have better buying power than you or I would. So when sourcing out components for making a line of computers, the team that sources hardware would put out "feelers" for what component they are looking for to multiple manufacturers and make a bulk purchase based on price/quality/availability and a number of other factors. So you'd be getting an "off brand" product in a brand name computer. Not saying that is a terrible thing, but like you said Scott, it's like the bowtie on the chevy. Saying that....I'm not even going to touch the proprietary point when it comes to upgrading. At the end of the day, if it works for you, and it makes you happy. Hurray! It's a win!

You failed to mention that Dell (and other desktop manufacturers) have subcontractors build parts that only work with Dell. Their motherboards cannot use other parts like fans, liquid coolers, improved graphic cards, power boxes, etc. I ran my schools computer room and server for 15 years (1991-2006), and repairing their products forced you to use dell products (except for ram) . I believe that this was their way of imitating Apple. During this time I learned that the gaming community had excellent knowledge about quality computer components. At that time Ailenware became one of the best early system integrator. However in 2009 they were bought out by Dell who wanted a footprint in the gaming community. In 2010 I bought an Ailenware Aroura with an Intel I7 900 series processor. It was one of the last designed computers fromthe old Ailenware, however I learned that Dell already hampered their system with their motherboard and power supply. It still runs today as I have upgrades every part that I could. I maxed out the ram, put in a ssd drive, replaced dead gpu with one of the few compatible ones available. I finally had to retire the computer as the liquid cooler for the cpu began to fail. Dells design forces you to replace it with their own, which has not been manufactured for many years. I replaced my computer with a system from Alexander PC, a system integrator that offers a lifetime warranty. They use high end parts that can easily be replaced and or upgraded. There are other system integrators that build quality computers at various price points. I would urge your viewers to explore these alternatives to the big brand name builders.

The "best"' is what is best for you, then end user. If you don't mind waiting 2-3 weeks to get your computer back, then the mail-in is best. If you have to have your computer working tomorrow, the next day, onsite service is best. I didn't fail to mention anything...I simply said pay attention to the warranty, cost and service level, and pick the one that's best for you. I can't possibly cover every warranty level from every computer vendor. Just want people to remember that warranty can make or break your buying options 👍🤷‍♂️

I am going to play devil's advocate here. Brands like Dell don't manufacture components _however_ they choose what to put inside the computer. HD vs SSD, RAM speed, power supply quality, MB components... _But_ unfortunately they usually choose the cheapest option (e.g. slow HD, USB 2, ...). Side note: Two of the people I know have had issues with Dell computers (The frame of the laptop screen deteriorated rapidly).

Brands I would BUY (including fully assembled PCS and motherboards): ASrock (they make excellent products and works fast) MSI (trusted and there software is really good) NXZT PC (uses customs parts and have excellent customer service) Main gear PC (expensive but well worth it) Brands I would think about before buying DELL (While it is a USA based company their regular and gaming Desktops and Laptops just absolutely sucks they glitch and have software such as support assist which is complete junk. There OTIPLEX bussiness desktops seem to be the olny good one out there that even with the junk that Dell provides it still functions properly) ASUS (Due to how they handled the AM5 motherboard incident I feel skeptical about them. But they did revert the decision. So far there software and interface is very nice and doesn’t slow down the computer unlike Dell and the other OEMS) Brands I would completely AVOID: ACER (Very bad quality control and will refuse your RMA) Leveno (It is based in China and is very unreliable) HP (ever since it got bought out by China it’s quality and software took a nose dive) Gigabyte (for refusing RMA on anything)

Extended warrenty is just for people not living in a country with good laws that protects the customer. In my country we have 5 years protection by law. To call something a warrenty you have to offer better protection then the law, and nobody does.

Asus had motherboards burn out AMD CPU's due to the BIOS overvolting and tried to pin it on the uses. Only after a fury of criticism did they man up. They boned me on tech support. Now I avoid Asus after 20+ years of loyalty.

The problem with buying Dell is that they use generic parts and proprietary parts. So, if something goes belly-up, you pretty much have to deal with the manufacturer. If you build your own desktop, you can pick, fix, or upgrade your own parts, and you know exactly what goes into it. All of my home-built machines are still running nicely years after the manufactured ones go to silicon heaven. The best laptop I ever had was a Sony Vaio, which I still use today after 15 years with the original parts, offline, of course. The best tablet I ever had was a 12-year-old Intel Surface Pro. The only thing that will end its online use is the forced switch to Windows 11 because of the processor.

Brands matter. HP Laptops in my country are reliable and there exists great after sales service to back them up. On the other hand, ASUS, Acer are nightmarish. I don't want Chinese Lenovo and Dell is alright overall but very overpriced. Other smaller brands are not recommended as they are not a reliable buy.

I think you're confusing 'brand loyalty' with blind loyalty. I may like Asus or Dell or HP because I trust the brand and my past dealinjgs with them. This though, has NOTHING to do with the misguided belief that THEY manufacture all the internal parts. What my loyalty is predicated upon is that my favourite brand will STAND BEHIND their product and those parts, allbeit outasourced, will conform to THEIR quality standards. THISm is why we are brand loyal and not because we ACTUALLY believe that Dell still makes all the parts. Cheers from Canada North

Perhaps. Regardless, they are supporting their "assembled" product. You would think that they would put high value on making sure the parts are of the highest quality to cut down on support costs. Sony has done it this way for years. Mac too

Wrong, many successful single calls to Dell support, on very short hold times. HP, many unsuccessful support calls, with long holds and many failed call backs and helpful answers. Maybe there are computer companies with better support than Dell, but not many. Not worth the risk of mine and my customers time.

Yes, "brands" do matter. I'm not buying a branded Windows computer to run Linux, I'm buying a Linux branded one ( apart from Dell's, scummy business ), I'm buying Linux firmware not Windows, I'm buying open source drivers. There's good brands there's bad, that's the nature of it.

Personally, every desktop computer we've had since the early 2000s I've built. I prefer the control of it and more particularly both performance and especially reliability. For my family I prefer Apple notebooks but if they want a windows machine then Dell. Both companies offer the best and fastest service. I replaced my PC a little too often. I'm a gamer, it's my thing... _CPU-Z J8P8UR / 9MM3CZ Both have been upgraded with new and replacement M.2s._
