The good thing with the Apple Card that I’ve not seen from any other issuer is (and I assume this is because they’re really looking for more accounts) if you get denied, they literally give you a layout of exactly what you need to do in order to get approved, and a deadline to get it done. Imagine if other companies gave you that information.

I got turned down by PenFed with a 777 Equifax 9 score & no late payments, no public records. I had 7 credit cards, including cards from AMEX & Citibank when I applied. I had only 2 new accounts in the last 12 months, and 0 inquiries on EQ. If you don''t have 2 1/2 - 3 years of history and/or one or more installment loans, applying for their major cards is pretty much a wasted inquiry. Not sure but they may weight income more highly than most other lenders. Most reviews suggest a 750+ credit score. There are reports of people getting PenFed's cards with scores in the 600s, even with BKs and fairly recent 30/60 day late payments on their reports, but usually these cases involve people is with pretty long established history & thick files. So definitely they work with people who have had some problems in the past, but not so much with people who don't have a long track record -- even with good scores and no baddies you can get turned down.

Hello can I ask a question? I have two credit cards which are not the best. Had to start with those to build credit. So know my credit has been improving and I’m getting offers from other credit cards. If I close the ones I have and open with the “better” cards will that be bad? I don’t want my credit score to drop or anything plus I really don’t want to have too many credit cards. I’m just curious as to what to do bc I’ve heard closing out cards isn’t a good idea. Help anyone know? Please and thank you kindly!
@MetroJet20003 жыл бұрын
You definitely want to open the new cards before closing the old ones. As far as if that will hurt your credit, probably. It depends on how old they are, because part of what makes up a credit score is "Average Age of Accounts." If you close your older accounts, those will stop factoring into your score and only the open, newer accounts will, causing a drop in your credit rating. Likewise, opening those new cards will do the same thing, but only for a little while as they will start to age as well. If you don't want to hurt your score, a good strategy is to put a small recurrent charge on your older cards to keep them active and open while shifting the majority of your spending to the cards you actually care about earning rewards on. Just remember to pay those off every month.
@dcsconsumerreviews16323 жыл бұрын
Don't close any if they don't have annual fees. You never want to close them. As far as a new account, it will hurt your credit age.
@amberjohnson71693 жыл бұрын
Do not close ANY card.
@goddessjones65593 жыл бұрын
As long as there are no annual fees it doesnt hurt to keep them and occasionaly make a small purchase. I wouldnt close any card until I have had the card I want to keep for at minimum 3 years and ideally at least 5 years. Part of your score is credit history and length of credit (oldest card length) so if you get rid of your cards then it looks like your new your length of credit history is no longer helpful.

Number of cards varies from senior to senior based on retirement income/sources and lifestyle. Being a senior myself, here is my thoughts/recommendations: 1. Analyze your monthly bills, like grocery/drugstore/gas/utilities/phone-Internet/dining out/travel/miscellaneous. I did an Excel spreadsheet with categories and annual estimates, then did columns for the credit cards I already have. I used the multipliers to calculate what my potential cashbacks might be. Then I added cards as a "watch list" that filled in the gaps. I try for as many 5% category cards as possible. 2. I highly recommend US Bank Cash+ credit card because it has various 5% categories to choose from. I selected Utilities and Phone/Internet as my two choices for 5% cashback. This is the only card issuer that offers Utilities. 3. I usually only apply for 2 cards a year, about 6 months apart. That helps to get approval/avoid denials. 4. Even though I usually pay my bills in full every month, I still keep a very low interest rate card that does not have any multipliers, as a backup plan if there is an emergency/large expense that I know cannot be paid off in 1 month. My card has 6.99% APR on purchase/balance transfers/cash advances. Always keep this one active, just in case. 5. Try to get your card portfolio finished by the time you retire because I have a feeling it will become difficult to get approvals as you age. For example, I was recently denied a Capital One Savor card because I did not any installment/mortgage payments currently owing. I had paid off my mortgage over ten years ago, so it had already dropped off my credit history. As far as car loan, that dropped off too. A lot of seniors are winding down or have paid off those types of debts way before retirement, so it's no longer on their history. Hate to say it, but this might be a "backdoor" algorithm that disguises age discrimination in credit lending.
