The problem is that when people go buy cars, most of the time, they listen to what the dealer says the payments will be and they accept it, not really taking into account their lifestyle. The dealer doesn't care about your lifestyle. They are simply crunching the numbers based on income.

All my life I look for older lower mile cars. My pickup and car are around 20 years old now and they get me around just fine. My tags and taxes this year were $164.00 dollars. Why spend $30,000 on a vehicle when you only spend 1 to 2 hours a day in it???? I always have them serviced regularly and I wouldn't be scared to drive them cross country. Learn to take care of your vehicles and they will last a long time. My phone is just a cheap Walmart phone and it don't cost me much. I don't get caught up in buying a new phone every time a new one comes out on the market. My laptop is eight years old now. I learned to keep things till they don't go anymore. My house sits on 10 acres and it is paid for. I am out of debt and have been for years. All that money I save looks better in my account than some car dealer, banker, phone company, treasures office, etc. Now take my neighbor who has two new vehicles, boat, camper and other toys. He owes on everything and he has two jobs and his wife works too. You call that a life. I believe he took his $20,000 boat out twice last year. My $600.00 dollar boat works great and I take it out at least once a week. People need to learn to be content is the first thing to becoming debt free. If we took away everyone's credit where would they be? If USA didn't have credit most people would be out on the streets.

Yes, of course she needs that tough-love, but she doesn’t need anymore shame than she already has. I truly hope her an her husband are on their way to bettering their situation and have learned from their mistakes. We’ve all made mistakes, some at a higher price than others. I’m sure she has read these comments and instead of shaming her, we should encourage and support her journey. It’s so easy to see someone’s misfortune and mistakes and quickly brag about how we’re so much better in those areas they’ve messed up in, but I’m sure there are other areas in our lives, that have nothing to do with money, that are in total chaos. Depends what your other finances are, really and what you call a "good" car. If you don't have kids, rent and have roommates and no credit card debt or any student loans (my situation) you can afford a bit better of a car. $10k in that instance will get you a "good" car if you shop around. I make closer to $40k, which isn't much, but my total debts minus food are about $1000 a month and that's WITH my $305 car payment (0% interest). Not everyone can be lumped into one scenario. It's the people with massive student loans, 2 kids, $10000+ in credit card debt and a sizeable housing payment that end up taking on a $30,000 car loan that need to be worried. I will probably never have kids. Escaped a 6 year marriage without having them.... no thanks. I like money and freedom too much, lol. Call me selfish, I don't care!

Your actually limiting your success because all you see if dollars and sense and don't have anything to put that back into. (freedom isn't worth as much as you think it does.)

Do you have any idea HOW expensive child care is!? They're SAVING money by her being at home. She'd have to take home more than her husband with her new job full time to get ahead because half of her salary, if not more, to child care. It isn't a matter of "want" to work. However I do think it's ridiculous she went into a huge masters program and has no idea how much she will make with it. There are other jobs she could do part time even while being at home instead of amassing more debt.
@AMindInOverdrive6 жыл бұрын
This is why I like to hear several opinions on things. Both of you make good points. I hadn't thought of the childcare but yeah someone recently told me the cost and I nearly fell off my chair - it would be better to stay home...also, kids being raised by mom/dad is much better for the kids - can't put a value on that.
@amiramatthews32556 жыл бұрын
We fell off our chairs as well when we started shopping around for child care. child care causes moms especially to step away from the work force. Along with a shortage of quality care. Cost and safety were the deciding factors for us. Its a catch 22 if working and paying child care put you in the red. One parent staying home saves money. Childcare. Transportation cost. Cost of two vehicles. It all adds up.
@ladyema88366 жыл бұрын
Yep, single moms do it everyday AND pay the expensive daycare. Pay $7000 - 10000 to the daycare but with a Masters Degree you could be making 40000+ first year and grow your income from there as you gain more experience. You still bring in money. These are excuses women who have husbands that can work find to stay at home with the kids. Which if you don't have debt or your husbands money is enough for your family then ok you have the luxury to do that. But if you have a large debt, don't complain if you are a part of the problem and not the solution.

ALWAYS pay off the debt with the highest interest rate %. I had a used car with a 5.69% interest rate, now it is fully paid. That's why it is important to always pay your credit card at the end of the month. If your credit card isn't paid, most of them have a 15%-25% interest rate on them. Then this would be the debt you need to pay off first, because it has the highest interest rate.

She's worse off than she thinks. She mentioned bringing in $5,500 a month. The way she said it sounds to me like she isn't taking into consideration operational costs. If that isn't AFTER expenses are paid, they're in a far worse position.... I do not think Daves assumption they make $66,000 was accurate.....

I’m using the snowball method to pay off 30K in credit card debt from house repairs. This program should be updated because $1000 is not enough money for an emergency fund. With inflation and the economy in a downturn, you need at least 1 month of expenses in the bank while paying off debt. I tried the 1K and my furnace and hot water heater broke at the same time, and the 1K did not come close to covering the expenses.

My car brand new was $21,000, 2015. Payment of $305 a month. 0% interest. I pay $500+ on it as I have literally no other debt that isn't unavoidable (food, gas, rent ect.) That will be the last brand new car I ever buy. Will have it paid off by the middle of next year at the latest. Then I will drive it until the engine jumps out of the hood and commits suicide. After that 2-3 years used for anything else I buy and it will be cash.

pay your statement balance or current balance. In either case, there are two good rules to follow - keep your spending low enough that you can pay off your statement balance in full by the grace period, and always make sure that you make at least the minimum payment on time

+Katrina Murphy It's not that she doesn't want to use it. She had a baby (surprises happen) and is doing the BEST thing for her child -- staying home to raise it. Frankly, I can't stand people who pop out babies and shove them into daycare so they can "have a career."

When all was said and done I had a car I soaked 50K into and it had a cardboard (covered in Vinyl) dashboard. Sold it for $23K! Biggest financial mistake of my life! How is she blaming the child? Is that a black woman thing, to have no inclination to raising your own children?? As a black woman, I do not understand the disdain most black women have for staying home and raising their own children and foregoing being a co-breadwinner. Why have children at all? If you are okay with missing out on their lives, not breastfeeding, not holding them, not being their main carer and nurturer, why do you bother to have children at all?

That guy clearly hitched his wagon to the wrong chick. His paycheck is basically being cut in half every month just to pay the mortgage and cars as it is, and no doubt he's going to be on the hook for paying off her student loans too. If he hadn't tried himself down with her, he would have almost no debt, probably using a secondhand truck and renting some cheap rundown apartment. But nope, he married her and now has to pay off her car, her degree and the kids expenses as well all on a single income. Poor guy.

Ok. Let's say her husband sell his truck. He still have to buy a decent truck unless he wants to lose contracts: potential costumers do not like old trucks that are falling apart. So he buys a 10k truck. Does he pay it cash ? No. They don't have cash. So he borrows it, but interests rate are higher for second hand vehicles than new ones. Plus he will have to spend more to fix it in the incoming months. About her, let's say she sells her car, we don't know if she really need a car to finish her degree and internship, why ? BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T ASKED HER. Let's say she doesn't. Then there is only one 10k truck to pay for. But let's say she lives in the suburb and there is no good public transportation. Then she buy a 2k Toyota Echo. You haven't told her about that...
