Back in 2020, I made two videos back to back about Devil May Cry's dual main characters, Dante and Nero. More DMC videos were planned, but they fell by the wayside, along with basically this whole KZbin channel.
Randomly, about a month or two ago, those videos blew up again! Excitedly I thought there’d been a new Devil Cry announcement but I guess it was just luck of the draw! Regardless, that’s A pretty good motivator and one hell (excuse the pun) of a reason to jump right back on the Devil May Cry design train. Cheers for helping kick my ass into gear.
Vergil is obviously the guy who needs profiling next as he’s one of Devil May Cry's most popular characters and iconic villains. He’s synonymous with lead character Dantes back story and has had a deep range of appearances across the series too.
Like Dante, Vergil's origin also spurs from Italian poet, writer & philosopher Dante Alighieri's narrative poem The Divine Comedy. Here Virgil (with an i), no, no, no, no, not that Virgil, acted as a guide to protagonist Dante displaying all of the noble virtues attributed to the perfect Roman, as they descended into the inferno of hell. This is quite the opposite to Devil May Cry’s character, who is as antagonistic as they come. The antithesis to his brother Dante, Vergil is quiet, calculating and power crazed. Keen to embrace his demonic nature if it means reaching his full potential, a sharp contrast to Dante's willingness to put his feet up and tuck into a Pizza.
Vergil’s design isn’t dissimilar from Dantes, though it still incorporates elements that are intended to set the brothers apart and show off their opposing character traits and world views. The similarities? They both have pale skin, silver hair, blue eyes and slim physiques, but their aesthetic differences come in the form of elements that the characters can control: their fashion sense.Vergil doesn’t let his hair flow loose like his carefree brother, he slicks it back to maintain his calculating look. As well as that he oftens opts for a classier fit; his trademark blue collared jacket is littered with intrinsic details, such as golden lining, silver and gold buttons and strapped shoulders, a stark contrast to Dante's much simpler red leathers. Some of the features of his jacket, such as the cuffs are so recognisable, that KZbinr Maximillian Dood, was able to accurately predict the characters inclusion in Devil May Cry 5 from a split second of footage when that game was revealed at E3 2018. Hell of an eye by Max.
Serpentine elements are also present throughout Vergil's ensemble, whether its a snakeskin texture or a snake's head hanging over his coat's left shoulder. The character is clearly portraying himself as an Apex Predator.
Despite this notable character design that lives on to this day, Vergil didn’t always start off like this, today we’ll explore how appearance has changed throughout the Devil May Cry series and decide on the one that I think ranks above the rest. A little pet peeve, V's design as Vergil's human form technically doesn't include the tattoos or the dark hair, those are from his familiars, some of the body tattoos are from Griffon and some others from Shadow, the dark hair is from Nightmare

They were essentially disguising what elements of Vergil's design were inherent in V. Which lets his mannerisms and swordplay (cane-play?) do the the hinting. Honestly, a cool element of the story telling, but when looking for the best Vergil design, it's not going to be the one hiding his features.

They could have added a post game dlc were we play as both Dante and Vergil during their time in hell were they each face of against different new servants of Mundus and discover that Mundus is coming back, wich would serve as a hint for the plot of a possible new game.

Definitely agree with 5's design being the best. One of the reasons for that, which I don't see discussed too much, is how good it looks with the rest of the effects. In DMC3 and DMC4, we had a lot of "blue". Vergil had his blue coat and almost all his attack effects were either light blue or dark purple, which looks nice but it's still just a bunch of blue. In DMC5 however, we get black from the outfit and light blue (or dark blue from the boss version) for the effects, which I think creates a much more amazing synergy than before.

Capcom ruined DmC Dante's design. The debut trailer was disgusting and in the game he doesn't have a dominant color either. When I saw the concept arts that showed DmC in red and black, he looked amazing. Especially how they wanted a DT form for both Angel and Demon. Ironically, DmC Dante looks great in his Neo Dante and DMC1 Dante costumes. DmC honestly is one of the more enjoyable campaigns to me. There's not many levels I would skip in that game. The idea behind a transforming environment was cool.

I think that DmC really had good art direction on EVERYTHING that wasn't redesigned/reimagined. The whole parallel world limbo aesthetic were original and great, the enemy designs were original and great (except for mundus final form that looks very generic giant boss monster thing). I guess their Vergil design was on-point without the hat since it still keeps Vergil's iconic "classy" look. But Donte is just a very very very bad redesign where he turned into a stereotypical archetype of a "badboy" with a loose jacket. AND LASTLY I very much hate that even if the brothers were half angel and devil, instead of human and devil. Their devil triggers are just them with a different texture (I would've appreciated a less human DT since they're not human anymore)

The face is still the same it's just a difference in rendering, with it being a few bonus DLC cutscenes I don't think they went as all in on the graphical fidelity as they did for the base game

Well twins can grow to have completely different faces based on how one is raised and stuff like that. So it makes sense why Dante and Vergil have different faces. I mean Vergil was literally tortured and changed completely to become Nelo Angelo. Dante has not been tortured or changed into a different being.

Honestly I'm torn between his design in 3 and 5. I like that one horizontal strip at the back of his coat in dmc 3 with two big buttons on each side I think it's there to hold the three tails of his coat. And I like the aesthetic of the boot gaiter buckles he has on 5 matching the buttons on his cuffs.

Vergil’s best fit is the black fit in 5 for me the ONLY thing I hate is that his coat isn’t floor length, the mod that makes his coat drag the floor complete that look imo.

I think he would stick out too much in dmc 5 they went more realistic so characters have darker clothes (dante, nero, vergil) and that way it looks nicer. Also it has sense that he has clothes like that he was tortured and enslaved for years

I think it's a very hard tie for me between DMC5 and DMC4/3. Because his colorful design of 4 and 3 is a lot more recognizable and iconic for me. BUT DMC5 Vergil design is the perfect evolution of his design in every aspect. The darker colored coat makes him a lot more broodier similar with the tone change of DMC5 from DMC4 and it also makes sense that the coat was once blue but due to all the stuff he went through it eventually turned black and complemented by the tattered tail which really sells the idea that he's been through hell off-camera. But I think his DMC4/3 is still better if the designs were put side-by-side without the story context and just basing on his personality and what kind of character he portrays.

Welcome back! The notification for this made my morning xD I personally agree with you on the fave Vergil design, though honestly I love DMC3's a whole lot, too. This video also brought something to my attention I hadn't thought about: I think one of the reasons DmC (the reboot) designs come off so poorly, despite feeling like pretty good designs in a vacuum, is because they are "contemporary" for their time, but the problem is, the characters of mainline Devil May Cry are pretty timeless, so taking something timeless and redesigning it to be contemporary means the redesign is always going to age worse than the original. DmC feels like it's eternally in the late 00s/early 10s, but the classic characters feel like they could have come out pretty much any time. I think making timeless, appealing designs is something that the creative at Capcom truly excel at.

On a side note, it's a shame that Vergil in the main games has been kind of an after thought. He hasn't been given any new levels, or bosses until 5. And even in 5 it was only one new boss fight, with basically playing the rest of the game with Vergil with no changes. That is the one big thing that DmC got right with Vergil. Even if it was just using assests, the new levels and story were appreciated. Story was shit, but the effort was appreciated

when you think about it from a story perspective though dmc5 was the Vergil game (which is funny considering 5=V). he cuts of Neros arm first giving him motivation to later fight Urizen, and the both becomes the big bad as well as the one who gets the main cast involved, and if you read the visions of V manga, it expands on the development V and thus Vergil goes through. be basically overcomes his trauma and matures. sure Nero had his own arc as well but 5 was extremly important for Vergils character

I'm... gonna have to mostly agree. While DMC3's version was perhaps the most iconic (and 4:SE was just a cleaner version), 5 is definitely the best. Besides, even if you don't like the black jacket look, you can switch out the color palette for the classic colors and it looks just as incredible. Gonna have to somewhat disagree with the reboot's redesign being good, tho. Nearly solid black jacket with designs at the very bottom which takes the eyes away from where you SHOULD focus, an oversized collar (which mimics DiNO's own which is just as bad looking), and pinstriped goddamn pants? Even worse, despite the goofy in retrospect look he has when breaking it down, the fact that it IS bland due to trying so hard to be "contemporary" docks even more points in the design. Doesn't help that the hat was the wrong kind of ridiculous to boot. But the looks are only one part of design, as behavior also contributes, and oh boy is Vergil's performance awful (just like every other character in the reboot, really) and beyond unfaithful to the original character to the point that it kinda spits in the face of who Vergil is, and that's a crime worthy of ridicule. Also, you pronounced Mundus wrong, lol.

One thing I love about DMC 5's version is how they changed the Yamato. With Dante getting his own devil sword, I thought it was weird that Vergil got no upgraded weapon to match. Except he did, the DMC5 Yamato is clearly distinct from it's older version, with more complex engravings and such. I think this is the Yamato empowered by Nero's Devil Bringer, since the sword is transformed from the Devil Bringer now, rather than just being stored within it. It is a really cool way of increasing power without feeling contrived. Idk if that's actually canon though, but it's definitely what I'm personally going with.

Best design in DMC3. When the Yamato was scabbarded, Vergil kept the scabbard itself up most of the time, which created extra personality for the character. In DMC4SE and DMC5 this is lost, the scabbard is lowered as is the character's motivation (in voice lines). Now he completely different character... sad.

I agree fully, in dmc3 he wields a katana without form, like he is beyond human techniques, he does not need that, he is so powerful he does not need to get in stance or show effort, keeping a pose. Then in dmc4 dante wields a katana like in an anime which makes sense, but then they copied and pasted in vergil so they would not have to redo the animations. Unfortunately they carried on with the trend for dmc5. In dmc5 Vergil looks goofy...the face and the exaggeration of the iaido

Personally I think DMC3 Vergil is the best design for him. To me, Vergil has always been kind of a campy loser who’s absurdity loops right back around to being kickass. I mean, he’s an Italian (or New Yorker. Kinda unsure where Redgrave is supposed to lie geographically) half-demon who wields a traditional Japanese sword and flies around cutting space in half. While I adore his DMC5 design, his over the top, more anime-inspired DMC3 look always felt more representative of him. Not to mention, I just love the style of 3 in general- something about the face models is super charming and I love the little tufts of loose hair on Vergil. As a side note, even though he’s not technically “Vergil” and more like a clone, his design as Gilver in the dmc1 light novel is super striking. The formal suit and totally obscured and bandaged body is a really cool contrast, and the image of him (spoilers!) absolutely exploding the everloving hell out of Dante with a souped up shotgun is wonderful.

DMC was really bad... But I got the DLC to play as Vergil I actually prefer to only use Yamato for everything. Beowolf and the mirage is cool but only the Katana was so cool. I just wish the was the red Summon swords to also pull enemies towards you. I really loved it to use enemies as stairs some times😁

Same face as Dante as it should be, and the hair looks more real because of the stray bangs/tuffs + more volume the outfit itself is fine I guess, some 'hmm' colour decisions (the gloves..) but it is an alright look overall, I like that he has a cravat =) the vest kinda reminds me of a bulletproof vest though - or ribs ? 😅 4 in theory is the same almost, but it looks so disgustingly plastic.. just no I don't see how the reboot is similar to the og, and I won't rate it 5 is a nice colour change - and we really need to know how and where Vergil managed to find his new sick coat it hell (the whole outfit really).. the pants and gloves are nice, but I don't like his boots at all the vest + coat combo I feel has _too much_ going on - the double (?) vest in two colours and the coat lapels with buttons.. a bit over the top I suppose the outfit could somehow be explained as "well it was hell you know, he got what he found", but no one ever bothered to explain how he got out in the first place so.. it's not the worst thing but also not brilliant and the hair is just bad, you got a bajillion-dollar realistic engine but Vergli looks like he's been struck by lightning or something, come on and the face... is handsome but casting two completely different people for twins is 🙅🤨 so.. 3 looks the best to me, and it's nice they at least gave him new clothes in 5 new costumes for 6? 🙂

I'm 6 months late but in dmc 5 them looking different does make sense because as identical twins get older their characteristics and defining look tend to change drastically also I'm personally really fine with the hair

I also want to point Dante and Virgil matured in different environments and different timezones. There is a reason why when you visit foregin countries each place has features of people that all look the same in that specific location. High altitudes low altitude changes people voice changes peoples nose this is something that happens throughout generations so it doesnt really excuse Vergil but it does make sense a person features will change depending on their experience and environment. Vergil is also always angry and has that stern look so those forhead lines and frown make sense menawhile Dante I laid back has no sunken lines and is alsmot always has a small grin smile that come his smartass comments.

Modifying a face in the end will result in a different look of the face so not sure what you are saying when they have the RE engine. Lastly "doesnt follow game logic" youre right, not sure what is the problem for you of them having different model faces when everything else signifies twins.

um, actually, vergil's appearance in dmc4 is canon (the opening and outro cutscenes at least) as it is set before any event in the games. this is when he bangs nero's mother 🤓

DmC: Definitive Edition just did a lot of things that really changed the core combo structure of the game to be a whole lot less engaging. It was still fun don't get me wrong but it was a huge step down in quality in terms of combat design. Having a dedicated launcher is cool until you remember what it's replacing. Swordmaster, Gunslinger, Trickster, and Royalguard all gone do to a simple change. Then there was the weapons problem. It was no longer about switching to very unique and distinct weapons that had their own execution and level of mastery. Now it was Power Weapon and Quick Weapon. Completely different philosophy going on. They were functionally sound but pretty boring compared to past games like say Nevan, Beowulf, Cerberus, Pandora, Red Queen, Busters, and Pandora. It was originally made this way because of the mandatory color coded enemies but since they now have fixed that it's now just this weird awkward system that's totally replacing the old one for no good reason. That's also on top of the fact the story change was completely unnecessary. I still had fun but it's very much doing it's own thing. It's kind of like the God of War changes but not as drastic so it's really hard to explain to new players what is EXACTLY different about the gameplay and why it will always make the OG DMC fans not really want to play it like the others. That's just Dante I haven't even talked about Vergil on DmC... Who's regarded as the worst to play character in the whole series. His DLC campaign ruined every last bit of faith anyone had towards that game. No other weapons just the Yamato with the same gimmicky Heavy and Quick mechanic but with Yamato just changing red or blue. It was fucking awful. All of that wasted potential. It's not like it's a great series that just drops a bit in quality it's a complete reboot on the whole system and the way we play it! Which gets mixed up in all of the "It's a bad DMC Game but a Good Action Game" when really it's a good DIFFERENT DMC game. But I'm glad we're on the DMCV timeline. Different ingredients for similar outcomes but ultimately still very different

Three things that always bother me with Vergil is: One: both he's human and DT designs in DMC 4 are just high definition version of the ones in DmC 3. Why didn't they gave him original looks to serve as counterparts for Dante's? Two: as of today the dmc reebot is the only game where Vergil has his own playable campaign. Why? And three: I don't like the design for Vergil's DT form in DMC 5. The over the top jagged design simply doesn't fit his personality and style of fighting. It does fit with Dante's actual over the top personality and his show off nature and way of fighting put not Vergil's cool, cold and collected persona. In my opinion Vergil's final true demon form should have been more tonned down and look somewhere between Nero's DT design and Urizen's final form, but without all the extra eyes, all the horns and instead of Nero's angelic features, a callback to the order of Sparda, Vergil's could have some ethereal elements/features since in that game Vergil's attacks are visually complemented with ghost like ethereal effects.

I prefer how Vergil looks in DMC3. His model is perfect. And while black is my favorite color, often in DMC5, I switch between the black and the blue. However there is one game that I NEVER switch colors/costumes and that is DMC4. Vergil in the Vante colors is 100% his best look to me. I would even say he looks better in red than Dante. The DmC Reboot is solid but I hated how we never got the clean look from the main campaign. My issue with DMC5 is that it dulls all the colors. DMC4 is vibrant and every attack looks amazing. I still boot up it up to enjoy the visuals and SFX. So for me in terms of design: DMC4 Vante>DMC3>DMC5>DmC.

Fun fact: between the DMC3 and DMC5 designs, Vergil loses his black scarf. It is then revealed the Nero got the name "Nero", because he was found at the orphanage door, wrapped in a black scarf

That's incorrect thinking. First of all, Nero was wrapped in a black blanket, not a scarf. Second of all, and more importantly, Vergil had his scarf during DMC3, which takes place AFTER he visits Fortuna (which is where he got the woman pregnant), so it doesn't follow. To begin with, Vergil never even knew he had a son, so there's no chance he'd have left his scarf for him.

While I do think that overall Vergil's best design is dmc 5, I don't like how his dmc 5 design dropped that signature blue that he's known for wearing. Dante is supposed to be red, while Vergil is blue.

While I like 5's design, I have one problem with it : It's not blue. Dante, despite losing more and more red in each new iteration of his design, still reads as a character coded as "red" because he keeps the iconic coat. Vergil has been coded as blue since he appeared as himself, yet 5 decided to just shove him in all black.
