Your video really helped me decide whether to open a store! One thing though, about your math on the starter store - if a non-store and a starter store both get 250 listings as standard, wouldn't the costs be equal on your 99th extra listing, factoring in the initial $4.95 and the $.05 difference paid for each extra listing? That would mean your 100th extra listing is when you would start paying more for not having a store.
@jasonmhayes3 жыл бұрын
Justin, thanks for sharing that with me. Unfortunately, I made a mistake in calculating the first tier store (starter). Although I recommend most frequent ebayers to just get a store if they don't have one, it almost makes more sense to just jump to a Basic store rather than even messing with the starter. Cheers! Just came across this video when looking for information on ebay stores; we have been contemplating for a while; still not sure because with a subscription (non store) we can still do promotions, put store away, and lower our prices by $ or % amount; guess the main delta is the listing fee reduction, ebay supplies credits and sending out coupons etc. Thank you for the information.

When comparing Non Vs Starter you state that someone should switch to Starter if they seller more then 265, this is wrong because 15 * .35 = 5.25 but if someone was using the starter it would be 15 * .30 + 4.95 = 9.45. If someone uses over 350 listings it would be worth it to switch to a starter store. Because 100 * .35 = 35 and for starter it’s 100 * .30 + 4.95 = 34.95.
@dustinfreeman98823 жыл бұрын
@@jasonmhayes I completely agree it is worth it to jump to a starter store just for the benefits. With all due respect, your math is 100% incorrect. At least in the way you're presenting it. You fail to mention that you're still paying $4.50 for the 15 listings after upgrading. You're saving 75 cents on those 15 listings while tacking on $4.95 for the store. So, at 265 listings, you're going from spending $5.25 for the extra 15 listings to $9.45 for a Starter Store with 265 listings. So, saying it's "worth it" is incorrect. It's not worth it until the 5 cents per listing you're saving covers the cost of the store. So, you're not saving money until you're listings are above 350. UNLESS! You're just doing it to have store benefits. lol. At that point, it's worth it to sling an extra $5 at eBay. If you're getting a store to save money on insertion fees, the starter store makes no sense in any situation.
@ScottBalkum2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonmhayes I have to agree with Connor on this. You are not comparing against the basis which is .35c. You are calculating based on 0 cost on the upgraded store level. From no store to basic, you need to compare 30c against 35c which is 5c. It takes 99 listings to make that math work. From Basic to the next level, you need to divide $17 by 5c (the difference) which is actually 340 items.

I may be confused. I don't have an eBay store subscriptions, but I can promote listings, use the seller dashboard, and switch to VACA mode. As far as I can tell the only feature I can't do is a marketing percentage sale discount. I only list about 60-80 listings/month now as a part-time seller. Hi Jason. Cool video and channel. Just to be clear, I fall under the Non category, but I thought financially it made sense at 349 listings since both the Non and Starter give you the same amount, 250. Unless you care about the perks, then it may make sense sooner. So only the 5 cents need to be multiplied by the additional listings (on top of the free 250), not the entire 30 or 35 cents. In other words, once you reach 99 (extra listings) x .05 = $4.95 is when the math to justify a starter store kicks in. Is that right, or do we actually get 500 free listings (250 free + 250 on top for the starter store) with a starter store? Thanks!
@jasonmhayes3 жыл бұрын
Casey, Thanks for reaching out! I appreciate your comment and taking the time to respond. In regards to the "math" behind my calculations, you actually do have to take into account the full price for each additional listing. You pay 35 cents extra per listing, so how many of those added up will reach the $4.95 total cost. Thats how I came to the response that I did. You are correct in taking the other "perks" into consideration. It may justify pulling the trigger sooner, rather than later. Hope this helps! Best of luck
@caseygutierrez53493 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jason, and I think you and your channel are awesome...just not too sure I follow, because you would still need to spend, on everything over 250 (for both Non and Starter) .30 and .35 cents.... that's whether you go over 15 listings or 100 listings, the only difference is .05 cents. Sorry if I'm making no sense here, but for me, the most important question is whether you get 250 or 500 free listings with the Starter store, and I gather you only get 250 (same as Non) which then really I would have to be at 349 before it makes sense to upgrade. Thanks for making my brain work, and I may still upgrade soon anyways for the other perks. Have a great week and may your store have a good one too!
@jasonmhayes3 жыл бұрын
Starter store is 250 Total Listings. Hope that helps
@dustinfreeman98823 жыл бұрын
@@caseygutierrez5349 Your math is correct. With a starter store you still only get 250 free listings. At 63 listings over 250 with a non store, you're spending the amount a Basic store would cost and gain an additional 750 free listings. The starter store is pointless if your intention is to use it to save on insertion fees. I think he hasn't accounted for the fact that you're still paying $4.50 on those 15 listings even after you pay $4.95 for the store. You're doubling your cost if you upgrade to a starter store at 265 listings.
@caseygutierrez53493 жыл бұрын
@@dustinfreeman9882 much appreciated! I thought something was off. Thanks for the clarification. So the Starter store makes sense if you are going after the extra perks or if you are listing way more than 250...since both Non and Starter have the same 250 free listings to begin with...as opposed to the other higher levels which actually give you free listings increase 👍 Pointless is a good word if you are only going after the free listings. Thanks again.

Question, if you don't mind: If I don't have a store, then what does my "inventory base" look like? Say, if I only have 100 or so items to sell, will they all be viewable on one site, or will they just sort of be randomly out there in the ether? Thanks!
@dgdt80892 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day the listing doesn't fuckin matter. What matters is the item limits, and you start off with 5 items or $500 a month. And they refuse to raise it no matter the positive feed back or production. You're only real option is to upgrade to a business account.

I'm at the starter store. I am thinking about moving to basic. Right now I have about 650 listings. All are auctions except 3. I think with basic I get 250 auction style listings. 1. In the basic store if I go over 250 auction listings what happens? 2. Should I convert all to a fixed listing? 3. Are fixed listings renewed every 30 days until sold? 4. Let's say I have 650 fixed listings. When they renew monthly will that leave me with 350 to list?
@jasonmhayes3 жыл бұрын
Quinton, great question.. let me answer in order. 1. If you go over the allotment of 250 auction listings in the BASIC store, you will be charged 25 cents per listing. 2. I generally don't do auctions. It will depend on what you're selling but I only recommend auctions for those items that are in HIGH DEMAND and get several bids over a week long span. If you aren't selling high demand items, I would suggest converting those listings to Buy It Nows. 3. Fixed price listings ARE renewed every month if they don't sell. Its pretty simple to not have to worry about them ending. It's pretty seamless. 4. You are correct. If you switch to the BASIC store and convert many of those auctions to BINs you will get 1000 listings to use, so yes, you will have roughly 350 left over if you want to add more listings later. You will still have 250 auctions as well. BASIC comes with a total of 1250 listings. Hope that helps! Best of luck with your biz. Jason

Thank you so much! I am trying to decide if the savings in fees are worth moving up to a basic from starter store so I can list more but that is a big jump in monthly fee. OK. The first example is only a difference of 5 cents for each listing over 250, Between starter and basic, so it makes sense only if they are listing 250 + 99. But ebay takes a different amount as a percentage of sales between starter and basic, also the free ship supplies... Maybe you speak on these parts but I am over halfway through... I want to know how much in sales makes the difference in store costs null due to the less percentage taken by ebay.
@jasonmhayes2 жыл бұрын
You are correct on the lower final value fees for the basic. I know it is more each month, but I almost think its worth it to just upgrade to the basic level. What you get for only a little more each month is worth it in my opinion. Hope that helps :)

Thanks Jason! Can you clarify for me: If you get 250 listings WITHOUT a store and then you jump to the STARTER store do you get an ADDITIONAL 250 listings for a total of 500 or is it the same 250 listings? Also, since eBay automatically renews your fixed listings each month, it's my understanding that this counts toward your free listings. So, if you have 250 listings up and they renew once a month, you've quickly eaten up ALL your free listings which doesn't leave you any room to list new items or "end & sell similar". Am I understanding this correctly? Your wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
@jasonmhayes Жыл бұрын

Jason, your video did help me, but your math is incorrect in comparing no store vs starter store. If I were to list 265 listings without a store, I would have to pay 0.35*15= 5.25. But if I had a store and were to list 265, I would have to pay 4.95+(0.30*15)=9.45. Since they both have the same free listings, you need to account for the fact you're still paying insertion fees after 250 for the starter store as well. I see you not quite understanding this in the comments, I hope I explained it better. Thanks!

Thank you for the video! If you have a Basic store and you pay for the year - then during the middle of the year you decide to change from the Basic to the Premium; does EBAY use the money you have put in for the Basic store towards the cost of the Premium store? OR Do you lose the money you put towards the cost of the Basic store? Thank you in advance!!
@jasonmhayes3 жыл бұрын
You're Welcome! Great Question: if you decide to go up in store, you basically just start paying the new amount so you don't lose anything. You're really just comitting to pay a monthly fee for one year. Of course, ebay would love to see you go from basic to premium since they'd be getting more money :)

Can you skip the starter level, and go straight to the basic?

few items on eBay and read online that a new seller is only allowed 10 listings per month. However in your video hear you mention that the number is 250. Can you clarify?

Good morning, thanks for your question! If you’re signed up with ebays managed payments, which most accounts should be by now, you’ll get 250 listings

How much a month limit do you get if you have a starter store though? I just started but I can only have a $500 limit. but I have alot of expensive items to sell. not sure what to do here.
@jasonmhayes2 жыл бұрын
Great Question, The limit doesn't really have anything to do with your store level. You can simply call in to ebay and request a selling limit increase no matter what store level you're at.

Thank you for all the info, I have a question, a lot of the benefits of having a store that you mention, like promoted listings, promoted listings campaigns, the seller dashboard with all those analytics, I do not have a store, yet I have been able to promote my listings for a long time, I am just an above standard seller (buyer?) I had my account for many years using it just as a buyer and only recently started to sell, since I have some of those benefits without paying for a store, I am a bit confused as to when would it make it worth it paying for one , thanks in advance!
@jasonmhayes2 жыл бұрын
Micaela, great question! I think ebay started giving some of the store perks to non store accounts since it does benefit ebay to have more users promoting their listings. That said, I'd still recommend a store at the levels I mentioned in the video. It's all going to depend on how many listings you have and whether you are growing rapidly or taking your time :)

The starter store has the benefits of all the other levels with the exception of the ebay shipping supplies coupon each quarter. :)

I have a premium store but only have 428 listings so I should go down to a Basic, but I see they charge extra $15.95 for Seller Manager Pro. Is that worth it?
@jasonmhayes3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends. If you plan on continuing to build your inventory I would likely just stay at the premium level. But if you think you'll stay around 400 listings, it may be worth it to drop down.

@@jasonmhayes hey same question, I have the premium store, thinking of downgrading to basic but I guess I would have to go back through every listing and put the invintory number in the title, is that correct..?

I just started on eBay and I’m currently only able to list 10 items max. If I buy the starter store does that immediately jump up to 250?
@jasonmhayes2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, jumping up in store won't impact your maximum listings at all. BUT, with that said, you can call ebay and request a limit increase. There's a great chance you'll get a significant increase. Thanks for your question, Nate :)

Hello, will I need a bussiness license or a LLC or anything of the sort before subscribing(or even after) to subscribe to a eBay store, or do i need to file taxes as self-employment or something? would appreciate if youd reply to this, i did research and i couldnt find the answer, i figured you would know since you have a subscription
@jasonmhayes3 жыл бұрын
Great Question! You don't need a business license at all. You can open an ebay store without it. At some point, once you start selling many things a day, it may be worth it to you to talk to a CPA and figure out the best time to register as a business to save on taxes. But totally unecessary to get going with an ebay store.

Very Helpful ty. My question is, If I commit to a basic store for one year, then decide to upgrade, do you get penalized for not paying a full year?

Not at all! Ebay would love for you to upgrade and pay more for a higher level store ;)

Jason for someone with maybe 10-20 items in their home and not knowing if they will continue with eBay would you recommend a starter store? Also, have you sold on other platforms? If so, what platforms?
@jasonmhayes2 жыл бұрын
Patrick, thanks for reaching out! Honestly, I would wait and see with only that amount of listings. I don't think it's enough to justify spending for a store. I do sell on 4 other platforms. It's been HUGE for my business. (Poshmark, mercari, grailed, facebook, depop). Best of luck
