I greatly respect Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. She advocates for mental health and has spoken candidly about her own experiences with depression and being treated in the United States for it. I know the British Royal family has tried to do the same, but in Sweden, it is nice to see the heir to the throne and a born royal using her own experience to reduce stigma against mental health.

Moreover, I think most Norwegians are impressed by the way Mette Marit has grown into her role and how the royal family has supported her along the way. By the way, I don't think a "self-financed" model would receive better reception in Norway, quite the opposite. The main criticism of Märtha Louise has been the fact that she has mixed her royal status with her business. The entire model is based on the principle that the monarchy represent Norway, not their own interests.

@christinaj.jensen48053 жыл бұрын
@Syafiq Nurhashim Junior royals are the second tier of royals who are less than likely to inherit the throne. For instance, as Maichiki mentioned Prince Nikolaj of Denmark, while he is the Queen's oldest grandson, he is the son of her younger son, Prince Joachim and currently ranked number 7 in the line of succession. This number will drop when his cousins, the children of Crown Prince Frederik and in particular Crown Prince Frederik's oldest son, Prince Christian who is second in line to the throne, starts to have children. Since 1953, only descendants of King Christian the X has been in the line of succession, however, because of some junior royals having married commoners, they lost their place in the line of succession, because back then it was unnormal for royals to marry commoners. These instead became the Counts and Comtesses of Rosenborg. It has yet to be decided whether Prince Joachim's children will loose their titles, and it will either be up to the Queen or Crown Prince Frederik when he becomes King. The only way for Prince Nikolaj and his three younger siblings to become senior royals, is if their four cousins suddenly died and Prince Joachim then became the second in line to the throne, followed by Prince Nikolaj and his three siblings, Princes Felix and Henrik, and Princess Athena.

The British monarchy by far holds the most influence and international reputation, its expensive but worth it. One of the major positives of a monarchy is that it can represent your nation around the world, providing a non political national symbol. Most European monarchy’s fulfil this role very well, but none can match Britain’s. Whilst we do have a sizeable republican movement here, in recent years support for the monarchy has held firm at around 65% and I doubt we’ll ever have politicians bold enough to actively campaign for its abolishment. With Prince William and his family the monarchy has a stable future as well. All the best to the other European constitutional monarchy’s, I’m glad that at least we haven’t thrown out all of our history and tradition.

I'm from the Netherlands and I kind of dislike our royal family. We have Mark Rutte as prime minister of the Netherlands, I've seen him more than the royals to a point that I feel like they're kind of unnecessary and just outdated here. During lockdown they went on a vacation to Spain, but they we're photographed in a restaurant in Spain without mask, so as soon as they got "caught" they flew back, all while we couldn't leave our country. The crown princess gets also like an insane amount of money when she turns 18. I just don't like them I think lol

The pay for members of the royal family is not decided by the royal family, but by the elected government. Have an issue with how much Princess Catharina Amalia is paid, take it up with the politicians, they decide her and the entire royal house’s paycheck. And yeah, their COVID mistakes were dumb, but everyone can make stupid mistakes and they’ve apologised. Their trip to Greece (not Spain) was approved and given the green light by the government. The royals asked the government if it was acceptable, ok and within the rules for them to travel, and the answer was yes. Despite this they still came home immediately and publicly apologised. Also remember, what’s the alternative? Making some politician no one likes president? The Netherlands would still need a head of state (separate from the prime minister)

The cost to UK tax payers for our Monarchy is a bit misleading because of the Sovereign Grant and Crown Estate. Basically the Crown Estate pays 100% tax but then The Queen is given a 22% (currently 25% for Palace repairs) rebate. So whilst technically the UK Monarchy costs tax payers money, really it's just Crown property income and not the general public which is paying for the Monarchy.

Greece and Germany will likely not ever restore their monarchies. Probably the most likely would be Serbia and maybe Georgia, but those are very likely either.
@jeandehuit53853 жыл бұрын
@@piratesswoop725 I think a place like Poland, where a far-right government is currently in power, IIRC, would be more likely. The 'issue' for them is the fact that while there are no shortage of descendants of Medieval & Early Modern Polish rulers, there is no 'claimant' to the (fictional) 'Polish royal family,' as the Polish crown was elective. So there's no 'monarchy' for them to 'restore' vis-à-vis a ruling family. The only thing they'd have to restore is the institution of monarchy itself (under a new family), which is redundant when you already have a far-right government in power anyway. But if they actually *had* a family in-exile, like Russia or France, I think the chances would be more likely. (Obvs. I do not advocate for the restoration of *any* of these monarchies. I am not exactly happy w/ the situation in Poland as it stands anyway; I'd like it even less w/ a monarchy involved...)

@@mr.anderson2241 Yes, but monarchism is an inherently right-wing ideology; Britain's Tories & Whigs came about b/c 1 faction (the Tories, the conservatives) supported greater powers for the king, while another (the Whigs, the more left-leaning party but still rather conservative by our standards) supported Parliamentary control over the king. I mean, this is pretty obvs. when you visit places like the r/monarchism subreddit. It's just filled w/ alt-right types claiming democracy is an overrated system. Democracy isn't perfect, ofc. but, the oft-quoted adage that it's the worst political system except for all the other ones remains true. The (unfounded) assumption you make is that there are such things as "right wing nations in Europe," which implies (at least to my mind) that there's an inherent political leaning in, say, Italy. In reality, there are only right wing states, right wing parties, & right wing ppl. Right wing parties may *run* those states & right wing ppl. may have voted those parties in. But it is not necessarily a 1:1 correlation; 1st past the post or lack of coalition governments can give 1 party the edge in an election even tho. the plurality of the ppl. lean a different way. There is also just the fact that the past tended to lean more conservative, so in conflicts like the World Wars, every side looks conservative to us, but when you compare them against each other, 1 is markedly more 'liberal' than the other. The same is still true of today; in 2019 both the USA & Poland had right-wing governments in power. However, only in Poland did you have reporters being jailed for calling the Prime Minster a moron.

Technically Norway does have an unbroken line of monarchy. The monarchy did not cease to be during the brief interlude between the reigns of Oscar II and Haakon VII, there just wasn’t a monarch. The *monarchy* has been continuous, the occupation of the throne has not
@jeandehuit53853 жыл бұрын
Well, the line-of-descent is certainly broken. Saint Olaf & Harald Hardrada probably *weren't* male-line descendants of Harald Fairhair (given Hardrada never claimed such descent in his lifetime). Harald Gille probably wasn't actually the son of Magnus Barefoot (he was from Ireland, for crying-out-loud). And I don't think anyone seriously thinks Sverre was *actually* the son of Sigurd Munn. Heck, Haakon Haakonsson might not even be Sverre's grandson (given Haakon Sverrirsson did not live long enough to acknowledge him). Subsequent monarchs *do* descend from Haakon Haakonsson (heck, the ones after Magnus Lagabœtir are even descended from Saint Olaf, since Magnus' wife was a documented descendant). But even then, no one believes Christian Frederick (alias Christian VIII of Denmark) & his siblings were actually the biological grandchildren of Frederick V of Denmark-Norway (given none of them looked like their 'father'). And ofc. Jean Baptiste Bernadotte had no biological relationship to any Scandinavian crown when his family ruled Sweden & Norway. Since both the current monarchs of Denmark & Norway both claim right of succession thru Christian Frederick's sister Charlotte, the biological lineage has been broken for some time (Christian IX descended from Frederick V another way, but he had older brothers & his grandmother had older sisters, so he couldn't claim anything directly. Ironically, the biological heir of the Oldenburg dynasty is the King of Sweden, but I don't think anybody cares).

I am under the impression that the Swedish royal family has more controversies than the Norwegian. Almost no one in Norway care about Mette-Marit's past, I feel like that was thing only when they were getting married. And the Epstein case is almost not talked about, because they were not really friends, but have interacted (as far as I know). However, there are severall controversies in the Swedish royal family that are newer. That prince Carl Philip married glamour model Sofia, and that she had been in a highly controversial TV-program (Paradise Hotel). And that Madeleine and Chris O'Neill wanted to live abroad, and that the King demanded that they live in Sweden if they want to keep their titles.
@Fanniiiy3 жыл бұрын
Naah that's all exaggerated. Some media outlets, that had nothing else to write about, made a fuss about Carl-Philip marrying Sofia, not many other people cared and now she is very well liked and we appreciate her being a normal girl. The fact that Madeleine lives abroad means she represents Sweden and Swedish companies in the states, and England before that. I'll admit that her husband isn't very popular but that's mostly because we don't know too much about him. The King didn't demand them to live in Sweden to keep their titles, that's written in the constitution to prevent non-working royals from having a HR title and therefor receiving public funds.

With regards to the kingdom of Sweden: It might be from the 10th century originally, but the royal family was only from the 19th, and traces its roots to an upstart Napoleonic general, so I'm not sure about the significance of the current royal family. An old saying even goes "If all else fails, you can always become King of Sweden" due to the family's poor roots. 2. It's kinda amusing how down to earth the Danish royal family is. The Crown Prince's oldest child, Prince Christian, who will be king himself one day, was confirmed last week, and a clip of his younger sister talking back to their mother, the Crown Princess, became viral due to it showing that beneath it all they're still regular human beings and even a princess can be a temperamental teenager hahaha. I love this channel! It's refreshing to see old topics discussed in new perspectives, with interesting questiins asked. As someone who live in a country with authoritative monarch, I think you nailed the scoring metric. This episode is yet another wonderful job you did. The only one part I am unsure about is freedom. Under an iron fist, it's harder to eliminate the monarch. However, it seems like less freedom would also mean less stable, as in if the people are dissatisfied, changes would be more dramatic, ie the monarchy would be destroyed instead of reformed. Thailand is a great example of this. They have a full lese majeste law. 10 years ago these laws were very effective in silencing people on the surface, covering up scandals, creating a huge bandwagon of public worshipping of the king. Now? These oppressive laws are causing anger and adding fuel to the resentment. Thanks to social media it's impossible to completely silence people like in the old days. Public sentiment can take a very sharp turn. There is no common ground in sight. Thai people have been arguing that if the monarch yielded its absolute power and gave the citizens freedom to reform the monarch, it would have a better chance to see a long-term future. One might argue that allowing its people more freedom was how the British monarch survived abolishment in the past. So this last metric is quite tricky. The rest are spot on. Just my 2 cents. Anyway thanks for this great episode and all the refreshing history content on your channel!

17:03 I'd say they deserve 2 points on the popularity of the royal family. Both Märtha Louise and Mette-Marit are well liked. Yes, there *has* been criticism, but nothing even approaching anyone actually *disliking* them. As for the cost to tax payers, you have to remember to correct for local price levels, yes, they're expensive in total dollar amounts compared to other countries. But honestly the whole *country* is expensive. When you correct for that difference in cost between say us and the Swedes and Danes I think you'll find that they're not nearly as expensive as they might seem. And while they *still* have some additional costs it's still money well spent on a *high* rate of diplomatic activity (we'd essentially be paying for that anyway if we had a elected head of state) and on maintaining buildings of historical significance (again a expense we'd probably still have). The costs that remains after those two factors and when correcting for costs of just *living* in this country is actually fairly low. I agree that they don't qualify for 2 points there, but I'd honestly give them 1 there. Anyway, our royal family is a big part of why we even *exist* as a independent nation after WW2. During the war they gathered us against the occupying Germans and played a crucial role in our dipolmatic efforts towards the UK and US, our first king was married to a British princess so we had ties there, and with regards to the US, our royal family had just had a state visit to the US prior to the war and had started friendships with the president getting him on our side in a lot of the diplomacy during WW2, without them our merchant navy would probably have ended up being just taken by the Brits, our goverment in exile wouldn't have had the funds it ended up having, the income needed to fight the Germans both at home and abroad. And after the war the Soviets had already occupied a big part of northern Norway, but the Allies negotiated with the Soviets, conceding eastern Europe in return for us getting back our lands. We're *definitly* less likely to replace our monarchy then the Swedes are. The Danes... Living in Norway I'd like to *think* that we're less likely to replace our monarchy then they, but honestly, it's probably about equal. But yeah... But back to the Swedes. If they had another monarch like their current king their monarchy would be falling soon. Thankfully their crown-princess is as down to Earth as our own royal family, and the Swedish monarchy *will* survive her. Oh, and on the whole political roadblocks thing in Norway... We have a system of proportional representation. So it's not enough for one political party against the monarchy to become the biggest in the country. You need enough support to have a whole *coalition* against the monarchy in order to abolish it. Since there's both monarchist and republican parties on both sides of the political spectrum that's just not going to happen anytime soon. Oh, and also, our king doesn't have de jure veto power he *does* have de facto veto power since no law are valid without his signature. He has only used this once in 2008. A law had been proposed where the requirement of our king to be a lutheran was suggested removed. He stopped that law.

There where some polls in Sweden some years back to see how the Swedes felt about the monarchy. A bit over half the people that participated where supportive/didn’t mind having the royal family and claimed that they’d vote against abolishing the Swedish monarchy. Interestingly the numbers also showed that support for the SRF are likely to increase a lot when Crown Princess Victoria takes her fathers place. (Take this with a pinch of salt since it’s something that’s stuck in my head from years ago, I have no idea where to begin to look for sources)

As a Danish citizen, I think the popularity of the Danish monarchy today is a testament to the fact that you don't always have to abolish old institutions to usher in new times. Sometimes, you can just reform them to meet the needs of the present. In 1849, Denmark got its first democratic constitution, Grundloven, which basically took away all power from the regent and gave it to the parliament, Folketinget. As the official head of state, the regent still has to sign all laws into effect, but this is merely a formality, since the regent is not allowed to obstruct the work of the parliament. Hence, the Danish royal house had to invent a new role for itself to justify its continued existence, and it has done this quite succesfully. It seems the secret to their success is twofold. On the one hand, they royals have maintained all the aesthetic splendor of a royal house's traditions and ceremonies, which is in large part what fascinates people about royalty in general. Also, as Danes, we get a great sense of continuity and national identity from seeing the royals surrounded by symbols of Denmark and contemplating the idea that Denmark has been a sovereign kingdom since the Viking Ages. On the other hand, the royals also seem to have adopted a very modern and more relaxed view of themselves, which means that while they take their roles as representatives of Denmark and various humanitarian causes seriously, they can also admit to not being perfect in every way and live relatively normal family lives. This allows them to relate to the concerns of ordinary Danes. Our current regent, Queen Margrethe II, exemplifies this in many ways. She is very well-mannered and adept at playing her role as queen to her people and as diplomat in Denmark's relationships with other countries. She is also very knowledgeable about Danish history and a talented artist. But in addition to that, she is also known for actually loving her people and family, having a good sense of humor, and being honest about some of her personal flaws. In fact, she even enjoys being parodied by comedians. I believe this ability to be at once a dutiful Queen with a sense of her role as a guardian of Danish culture, a diplomat, an artist with an eye for the glamour of royalty and ceremony AND a real human being, who can laugh at herself, is what endears her to the Danes. Indeed, it seems unlikely that the Danish monarchy would have survived to this day, if our royals were anything like the ones in the UK, because the ability to laugh at oneself and be approachable is absolutely crucial to being a beloved public figure in Denmark.

I sincerely hope the Belgian monarchy will persist. They had major issues with their image because of King Albert II's selfish behaviour (and the refusal to acknowledge his illegitimate daughter), our very shy and awkward King Filip and their poor knowledge of the Dutch language/ French accent. I am rooting for our future queen Elisabeth, she could bring a fresh breath of air into the palace and the country.

Yes, philosophically and ideally, it's outdated but coming from a realistic sense, popularity still holds a great deal of power when practically assessing the stability of an institution.

To date, no European monarchy has been abolished through the ordinary legislative process, i.e. a proposal is duly made like any other, debated and voted on in the parliament, put to a referendum which is approved by the electorate. Monarchies fall through violence in one form or another, either by revolutionary action (typically from the populace in general, but occasionally by elites in the military/government) or upheaval in consequence of the nation losing a major war. Spain is probably the shakiest, since the country itself seems ready to split apart both regionally and politically, combined with the romantic legend in the minds of many of the supposed golden time of the 1931 Spanish Republic. However, if Felipe doesn't follow in his father's (or great-grandfather's) footsteps and manages to stick strictly to good decorum, and Leonor keeps herself from personal scandal, it will still be difficult to unseat the Spanish monarchy by constitutional means.

As a swede I have the impression that the king is quite likeable despite the rumors of scandals. There are lots of memes and funny videos about him, but I feel like they're not created out of hate or scorn, but more of a humorous endearment. He's sometimes referred to as "Knugen" by people, since he's dyslexic and apparently once misspelled the swedish for the king, "Kungen". He's also known for wearing funny hats and once greeting a smaller city's inhabitants by the wrong city name 😂 I do think crown princess Victoria is more respected, and has been commended for speaking about her struggle with eating disorder. All in all I think this video is pretty much right, I think our royal family is liked by many but disliked by some, and not necessarily because of them as individuals but because of the tax money. I think they're doing a good job as representatives and symbols, working with charity and awareness, and "hosting" the Nobel prize dinner 😄 Also their birthdays and weddings can be quite popular, with many coming to see them outside the castle and in the streets.

A few things I'm sure people already have told you about the Norwegian Royal Family: 1. The controversy about Crown-Princess Mette-Marit was at its Hight in early 2000s but has in recent years ebbed out. Yes, there are still a few who mentions it every now and again, but as she has shown to be an incredible mom to the favorite Norwegian heir; Princess Ingrid Alexandra. No one in my generation(90s) care at all, cuz she's shown a growth from her mistakes 2. The Norwegian people don't really think about the cost of the Royal family, except during large celebrations like Ingrid Alexandras 18th Birthday last week. But If we paid less for them in taxes, nothing would really change. 3. The biggest controversy in the Royal Family to date is Princess Märthas fiance Shaman Durek. He has had so many controversial statements that are so out of the blue no one thinks he's in touch with reality(like stating that children get Cancer because they want it, casual sex attracts subterranean spirits that leaves marks in a woman's vagina, claims he can turn atoms and reduce people's aging, and that 5G technology is a tool to make regular people the governments slaves, to mention a few..). He usually gets away with it by claiming that its his race that makes people not like him, but racism is not a factor at all. It's the really dangerous claims that he makes. 4. Most of us are sure that the monarchy will stay at least until we've seen Princess Ingrid Alexandra make her mark on it. She is a loved Princess, down to earth, understanding, empathic, funny and gorgeous. We have high hopes for her, but who knows what will happen after that.

I love your videos! I do however feel like some of the information you gave about Norway is off. The crown princess' name is Mette Marit, and no one really cared about her child out of wedlock except gossip magazines and its not something spoken about or cared about by common people, at least not anymore. I think most people saw it as an endearing love match, like the king and queen had. Märtha Louise is no longer a royal, but she did make waves with her odd views but she's now a reality TV star and doesn't do any royal engagements.
