Your introduction is true about the state of the French air force in 1939. But there are a couple of things to say in addition. 1- the French army was already aware of the deficiencies in question and that it had initiated a major modernization program in 1937. But which would not succeed until the end of 39 and beginning of 40........too late. This is what caused the panic buying of American Curtiss Hawks, from the end of 38 to the beginning of 39, to make up for the delay. Or the Vought V-156F Vindicator, or some North-American A-64. These aircraft are already outdated and are only intended to bridge the gap between the program and the start of the war. Like other models that are even more obsolete and which will not even arrive before the armistice. I am thinking of the Curtiss SBC-4 Helldiver-Cleveland, the only aircrafts delivered to France rusting on an airstrip in the West Indies throughout the war. Or even the Northrop A-17 A, which like the Grumman GR-36-wildcat-martlet, will not have time to arrive in France and will be given to England. But at the beginning of 1940 fabulous aircrafts will emerge from this modernization program. Like the Dewoitine D-520, or the Bloch 152. Some will only remain prototypes, like the VG-33 arsenal, or the Potez 230.... there will also be a complete range of light bombers. Unfortunately too little, too late.
@drfunkesteinАй бұрын
2- we must also not forget that despite all this, the French pilots between September 39 and June 40, will shoot down more than 900 German aircraft!!!! which proves the quality of French pilots. But above all, it will be of great service to the R.A.F. in his future fight during the Battle of Britain. Even Churchill admitted it and even Luftwaffe officers complained about it, before starting the Battle of Britain. This fact is often overlooked. It's a shame. 3-But despite all this, the great misfortune of the French Air Force was the will of its leaders to employ it in a totally stupid way!!!! the leaders of the French air force did not believe in the use of ground attack aviation. They had a too high opinion of themselves and never wanted to collaborate with "the crawlers"....the infantry. This caused zero cooperation between the two arms and when we know the strategic importance of the alliance between air and land, at the military level, we easily understand the fatal strategic error that this attitude was. Hundreds of examples exist during the Battle of France, where the non-use of air weapons by the French, because of the lack of cooperation, was fatal to them. The most famous remains the breakthrough of Sedan!!!!!....the columns of German tanks had been spotted!!!! But the Army was suspicious about the information coming from the Air Force!!!! and when the attack began on Sedan, the air force refused to send the fighter to shoot down the German bombers, although they were poorly protected, because the fighter "should not be used for basic work"... .sic... result of all this incompetence and this arrogance.....the encirclement of the French and English forces in Belgium.....and fall of France. Here I hope to have shed a little light on your lantern of knowledge. and thank you for your video

French air force, like the soldier on the ground, fought bravely and courageously in 1940. Mostly with less capable equipment (in the air) Nothing is more false that the white flaggers we get from the armistice of 1940. Thanks a lot for this video, who help to show to the world that french soldiers of 1940 where by no mean weak. Gloire a nos anciens 🇨🇵 PS: 0:30 french build the Maginot line also because of the lack of population after all the dead of WW1. having a strong definsive line with powerfull bunkers require less soldiers to manage the front line. It's also why, most of 1940 french tank had a 2 or 3 man crew unlike the german who had a 4 or 5 man crew.
@showtime112Ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment and for contributing information!
@eric-wb7gjАй бұрын
French manpower issues go back to Napoleonic times. It's not really why the French had 2 or 3 man crews, it was just their doctrine at the time. The Germans struck upon the best compromise for their medium tanks, but their smaller tanks which were the most common, had smaller crews (like the British, Czechs, Poles, Italians, Japanese, Americans, Soviets). French, Belgians & Germans (& Czechs) all had ideas of defensive lines, which went back to WW1. The Belgians only stopped their part of the defensive line, & went for neutrality, when the French decided to ally with Poland. France then decided on a part defensive, part offensive plan, but ended up not having the time or funds to complete either. Yes, a lot of French fought bravely, it was their WW1 Command structure (like all the rest of the European military, except Germany), very poor military intelligence, military leaders, politicians & social divisions that caused the 1940 disaster, not the front line troops. One of the reasons the Dunkirk evacuation of French & British troops was possible, was the way the French 1st Army fought to hold off the Germans.
@timonsolusАй бұрын
Actually, most French tanks in 1939 were designed to have strong armour. But the only cost effective way to build large numbers of strongly armoured tanks in the pre-war period, while minimizing weight and having acceptable mobility from small pre-war engines, was to make the tanks relatively small. This was achieved by severely limiting internal space inside the tank, which limited the number of crew members that could fit inside. This forced the French tank crew members to perform multiple roles. A consequence of this was the one-man turrets of many French tanks. It should be remembered that the majority of German tanks in 1939-40 were the small Panzer I and Panzer II, which also had 2 or 3 man crews. The French R35 and H38 tanks had thicker armour than these German tanks, and bigger guns as well. Their real downfall was a severe shortage of radios.
@nickmitsialisАй бұрын
No not the soldiers, but the political leadership's nerve failed. They ALSO remembered the bloodshed of WW1 and were probably afraid to repeat it. Along with that, while the Germany/USSR pact was holding, French leftists caused lots of problems for France up to May 1940 (labor problems in the production and repair facilities etc, if not full on industrial sabotage). It was said that France had a lot of societal issues at the time, that added to the problems

We made excellent aircraft like the Morane Saulnier 406 or the Dewoitine 520, but our industry couldn't produce it very fast due to the social trouble that we had on 1936 with the popular front. I didn't know that we had bought a such quantity of this american aircraft, for filling the gap. This episod is during the "Drôle de guerre", when we didn't want to invade the german territory due to the Maginot line. Curtiss P-36 / Hawk 75 was not that hopeless fighter what many thinks. Compared to the Spitfire by the Brits, the Curtiss showed better maneuverability and much better diving speed and control at high speeds. I cannot recall the climb, but the horizontal speed was considerably less. Also range was something better for the Curtiss. It got some early versions of the Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp and the Wright R-1820 Cyclone, and usually had only light machine guns in foreign service, still had acceptable early war firepower. The airframe was sturdy and could withstand battle damages. The biggest problem was the rookie pilots who flew it, as both the Germans and Japanese had battle hardened pilots, aces. French used them as every other types too during Operation Torch against the Allied forces... with not a great success.

The ‘Phoney War’ was not remotely ‘boring’ for many combatants outside of the Western armies. The UK Merchant Navy, for eg, the war was in earnest from day one. The colliers on the North East coast supplying coal to the South of England is a part of the war that’s forgotten about. They were attacked by air and sea constantly and had very little help bar some old naval guns stamped 1898 fitted in the rear (guns at the front of a ship were considered ‘offensive armament’ and forbidden on merchant ships) and a WWII vintage Savage gun for defence gains air attack. The RAF, as usual, were useless, too.

True, a lot was happening at sea during this period.

This good stuff. Have you done any or done any research on the air battles of the Spanish Civil War? Frank Tinker American mercenary had few victories for the Republicans flying Soviet Pi 16.
@showtime112Ай бұрын
Thank you! I haven't yet covered any Spanish Civil War but I plan to. Your suggestion might be interesting. I might also do some general videos covering foreign involvements (such as what did the Italians do there, or the Soviets...).
@akacadian3714Ай бұрын
@@showtime112 I came across Tinker's story after reading a book about the Spanish Civil War (SCW) and the International Brigades. Tinker unlike the volunteers for the International BDEs was not political but straight mercenary he just wanted to shoot down planes. Tinker was a USN pilot and later US Army Air Corps in the 1930s. with a history of discipline issues. He is sort of a character that was a friend of Ernest Hemmingway's in Madrid during the SCW. I think he maybe the only American to have been victorious flying Soviet aircraft. I am sure this historic background is not the meat of you material but I really like your work.

@@akacadian3714 No not the only one, i think there was one more who also later flew in ww2 and then became an ace, dont recall the name though, i do remember reading that this individual also served in the Korean war but in the ground because his Spanish Civil war record was not appreciated by the US airforce

Very good vid. The Hawk was a good match for the 109D, the earlier jumo engined model. In November 21 109D's jumped 9 Hawks, the French pilots shot down 4 Germans and 4 others force or crash landed. One Hawk force landed. When well flown the Curtiss 75 could be quite dangerous.

How courageous a victory to have pursuited an unarmed plane !
@showtime112Ай бұрын
Recon airplanes provide valuable information which can then be used by units that actually shoot. I read an autobiography of a Soviet P-39 ace and he said that their ground troops were especially happy when their fighters were able to shoot down Fw-189s. Appearance of one such plane meant they would soon be targeted by artillery.
@jean-Pierre-bt8xwАй бұрын
@@showtime112 I don't said the opposite.. .excepted that when began the WWII, there were some unofficial" rules... they were dating from WWI where fighte pilots were considered and were considering themselves as "Knights"... One of the rule was that when an unarmed plane was to flee far after the first passage, then he was free to run away... I know it was not true war rule but a true engagement rule, commonly applied in WWI and many did apply it even in WWII, like the american bomber totally out of order to fight and protected by a german BF 109 till the Channel to avoid other germans or the german flak to destroy it definitvely... then in this case against an unarmed slow biplan, the german was far from being a Knight.

As always a great video, thank you, as a WT veteran the H75 is a plane that I like a lot (even if on WT the Me 109E1 has, for unknown reasons, a better turn rate than the Curtiss ^^ and there are no single-engine French reconnaissance aircraft like the Mureaux, which you rightly replaced with a D371) ^__* an old battle (4 yrs ago) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fanZZHSjba2CiNk&ab_channel=LupodiMontenero

Thank you very much! The French recon plane is a stand-in. I suppose War Thunder will never introduce recon airplanes 😁 But they could work under some circumstances, new game elements could be introduced such as points for locating enemy ground units or bases.
