@@StuartRyanMusic I have a Strat, a Tele and had a 62 reissue Jazzmaster of all the guitars I have bought and sold over the years, I miss my Jazzmaster the most. The old offer you can't refuse basic character flaw. Leo Fender created the Jazzmaster to compete for the Jazz guitarist market. It fell short probably due to the solid body. Because of it's unique tone and the independent rhythm circuit, it was a hit with those in the Surf Guitar genre in the early 60's. Especially with the Ventures, which Fender created a Ventures signature model with gold hardware. Thx for the great comparison vid.

Hey Stuart, thanks for an extremely well done video! I have owned all three, but I currently have a 2019 Fender CS 59 Jazzmaster, which I have had for about 6 months. I agree with everything covered here, from the silky vibrato, to the fatter drive sounds on pickups. I particularly liked the bit where you showed how well this guitar can cover those archtop-style tones, contrary to what is often thought. More than any other guitar I have played, a huge variety of tones can be had depending on where you pick between the bridge and neck PU. I purchased this guitar to be a bright, jangly instrument to stand out on top of a mix, but I have been pleasantly surprised at the spectrum of tones it can cover.

This was very well done. I’m only now seeing this, 3 years later, and this was the best comparison of the 3. I solely owned the Tele and Strat for many years. I just recently bought a jazzmaster and honestly have not really played it since I have always loved the Tele above all. Hearing you play the jazzmaster convinced me that it belongs and deserves the comparison…it lives in a world of it’s own. Thank you.

I've been playing for only 4 years and I started with a les paul because I wanted to play heavy stuff. But I've owned a tele for a year now and I just find something beautiful about it. It has that bite but also doesn't get too muddy, and yet it plays amazing clean tones. I like to call it 'versatile aggression'.

They sit in a track so well thanks to that bite. Believe it or not I've never owned a Les Paul!

Fantastic comparison and playing - Subscribed! Broad brush generalisation: Tele - Twang Master Strat - Funk Master JM - Surf Master Truth is they are all equally capable, but the JM clean is outright beautiful, the section from around 18:00 is sweeeet. The overdriven JM was maybe a bit too broad, not as clear as the Strat and Tele (that really cuts through). The demo of the more subtle tremolo action on the JM was appreciated. The range of tones from the Strat confirms its huge appeal over many decades.

The Strat has one special power that the others don't have: It sounds savage tuned to Eb. I would summarize it like this: Tele is best of the three for most purposes, especially Rock and Country. The Eb tuned Strat is best for Blues and Fuzz and the Jazzmaster is best for Reverb/Surf/Ambient. Funk works with all of them.
finally someone demos these iconic Fender Guitars in one presentation . Well done these guitars all have a great tone and distinct sound . Thanks !

Kind of bugs me when I hear people saying “twang” all the time, describing the tone of Telecasters. To me “twang” is more descriptive of a playing style, sort of like “chicken picking”. Go listen to someone like Julian Lage playing jazz on a Tele. The term “twang” in no way can be applied to his tones.
@PODMTHC4 жыл бұрын
Probably what they're referring to is that buttery almost slippery characteristic that comes uniquely from teles

Thing is a Tele can do pretty much anything from that treble heavy 'twang' thing to the rolled off warm jazz tones. Probably my favourite guitar

It is because there's no other guitar that would "twang" better than a Tele. Almost every guitar is very versatile but sometimes we use it to refer to its unique voice.

This guitar is so smooth and clean sounding but can and will melt your face with dirty tones. My very next guitar purchase will be a Jazzmaster AP II. Your manipulation of the rhythm circuit to get jazz box tones was amazing. I don’t know why, but every other person I’ve heard demo that circuit seems to always make it sound horrible and utterly unusable, like the old filtered neck pickup circuit on original Tele’s that just sounded like mud. 👍

The rhythm circuit on this one is great, I use it often for when I need to get L5/175 tones - I didn't think I'd touch it but it's turned out to be really useful. I had to record a film score session recently and was about to hunt down a 175 to borrow but this thing did that tone perfectly!

Random assortment of questions/suggestions for videos! 1) Could you do a comparison on different acoustic body shapes? Or the sounds of different woods? 2) What is your current warm up / practice routine? 3) During your playing history, what techniques/songs/tricks/realisations did you learn that made the biggest improvement to your playing? 4) Do you think Kemper amps have killed tube tech? 5) Have you ever played/have an opinion on fanned-fret guitars?
@StuartRyanMusic4 жыл бұрын
Great suggestions Dave - I can answer a few of those now. For practise it's sightreading Bach as much as I can, I try and stay focused on just a few things these days but over the years I did a lot of transcription and playing along to tracks to try and develop other styles. I wrote a column for a guitar magazine for many years so each column was like a practise session - I'd have to learn material by the artist and then write something in their style. I found this learn/adapt approach always worked really well for self-development. As far as tracks - learning pieces by Chet Atkins, Tony McManus and Tommy Emmanuel were great for opening up the world of finger style. Too many to mention for electric but every electric player should learn some Nile Rodgers to discover if they can REALLY play rhythm guitar! I don't think Kemper is the end of the tube world - in fact I fancy another amp myself at the moment. However, you can't compete with the speed and efficiency of a Kemper - setting up amps, preamps and eq'ing would make work like this a lot more detailed. So I love the Kemper but do miss the 'feel' of an amp. However, being able to work at room volumes rather than blazing amp volume is a huge plus at my age. I quite like fanned fret - you don't really feel that much of a difference to be honest and they can really help with intonation. However, if an existing acoustic plays well and has good intonation I don't think there is a huge need for a fanned fret unless you are using really low tunings and thick strings. All the best, Stuart

@@StuartRyanMusic Would be great to see a video about "1) ... different acoustic body shapes? Or the sounds of different woods?" .. and more about acoustic guitar .. what do you look for when buying it (specially from a luthier) ? What do you need to know before buying it? And this process of " ... have to learn material by the artist and then write something in their style ..." would be great to see you doing one of these in video. :) Be safe everyone !

Sometimes with lots of reverb or effects it's harder to tell adifference, but the tele won for me once again. It amazes me that lots of teles sound better than lots of strats to me. Man I love your playing! such a nice control over the guitars sounds rythm and so much music!! Thank you very much! Cheers from France !
@StuartRyanMusic4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Vincent, hope you are well over there - I was hoping to make my 6th trip to Paris this year but alas that's on hold! The key thing for funk is relaxation - any tension and the strumming hand will tense up/get tired quickly. A large part of it is being able to feel and count 16th notes - '1 e + a, 2 e + a' etc when strumming. A big tip is to loosen the grip on the pick as that will relax the rest of the muscles in the hand and wrist. Let me know how you get on! Best wishes, Stuart

Came for a good explanation of what the strengths/differences are between these guitars, and stayed for your absolutely outstanding playing! I'm gonna have to go back and take notes on some of these crazy chords you're making... A lot of videos like these tend to lose track of their purpose, and instead just end up showing off the guitar skills of the player, using so much gain/distortion that you can hardly tell the difference in tone; but not this video! You used minimal effects to really emphasize the differences in tone, and your playing managed to be incredibly impressive and pleasant while still showcasing the strengths and ranges of each instrument. This is how all videos of this type should be done. Amazing job!! You've earned one more subscriber. Here's to hoping you get all the more. You really deserve it!

Nice and thorough comparison Stuart... I appreciate the work and skill involved. I have a tele (an Esquire actually) and love it. I was looking for a jazzier sound for some music and had gone down the Gibson P90 style guitar route (I play only with fingers & no nails so humbuckers are too fat!). But maybe a JazzMaster is a better option...with the rhythm circuit... a request for future videos is to see more of your studio set up, you get nice sound here! Best of luck with the ankle, Paul

Hi Paul, that rhythm circuit is fantastic, I thought I'd need a 175 but when I need that tone I just use the JM! Studio is a mix of things - quite a lot of outboard eq's and compressors which I love combined with some plug ins. Amp tones are all from a Kemper, my ears are too damaged for loud in the room sounds now
@22Boyne4 жыл бұрын
I can't believe I'm saying this, I really can't, but I think I prefer the Jazzmaster! As mentioned, it seems to be able to touch on both the Strat and Tele sounds as well as being different in its own right. I never used to rate Teles, but that was back when I was young and stupid (now I'm old and stupid, but I digress...) and now I love them, to the extent I recently bought one. Strats, well, I bought one a few years ago and it does what it says on the tin. Hard to argue with. My favourite for over 20 years, however, was a Gibson Vee standard, and this brings me back to this review. Assuming there was no fancy footwork (out of shot) on equally fancy pedals or amps (and in this instance I don't think there was, unlike certain other reviews by other folks), this has been a really good comparison between the three guitars showing their relative strengths in the limited time available. Nowadays, however, with all the clever modelling amps, pedals and other gadgets available, it is possible to make most guitars sound similar to most other guitars. This is cheating, really, a bit like digital photography if you see what I mean. In conclusion, in what has turned into a semi-rant, a round of applause to Mr Stuart Ryan for a good, unbiased presentation and some really skilful musicianship. Now, what size of mortgage do I need for a 60's Jazzmaster?
@StuartRyanMusic4 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, it really does so much more than you'd expect. It probably ultimately comes down to how you feel about the aesthetic of the Jazzmaster (some people hate them) but tonally they are amazing. I use the Kemper for speed these days as my work is based around recording music - it takes away the fun of amps/pedals but it's super fast and reliable. Most importantly for me is that I can monitor at talking volume if needed and not risk my (already damaged) hearing. Ah, that 60s Jazzmaster...get them before the prices start to go up! Thanks for watching!

Im torn between the jazzmaster and the strat. Im just worried the jazzmaster will be sort of limiting because I know you can do almost anything on a strat. My dad says jazzmasters cant really cut into a mix like a strat can. I write and record my own music on a little audio interface. I play and write mostly indie rock and alternative music. This will be my most expensive guitar purchase ever and I really don't want to regret it. Stuart, what do you think I should get?
@s2seltaeb4 жыл бұрын
Any of the three will be excellent. The Jazzmaster’s stock bridge (vintage design) can be a problem for some people... Stuart’s Jazzmaster has the Custom Shop “RSD” Bridge which is excellent, but not available from Fender unless you get a Custom Shop Jazzmaster. As Stuart said, the Jazzmaster kind of fits between the Strat and Tele. I personally like the ergonomics of the Jazzmaster body. I like that there isn’t an upper bout. I also like the vibrato system on the Jazzmaster way better than the system on a Strat. I’m lucky to own all three. If I had to pick one as a desert island guitar, I’d have to pick a Telecaster. 😉
@StuartRyanMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucas, great advice from s2seltaeb and I'd echo much of what he says - my JM is a very good model with great parts so doesn't cause me any problems. On the lower end models you will end up changing the bridge, pickups etc which can be frustrating. JMs generally do cut through a mix really well owing to the bridge design which gives quite a lot of bite. However, in your position I'd get a Strat now, it's an iconic guitar that can do most styles really well and there is something about playing an instrument that you can relate to many guitar heroes. A Jazzmaster can come later but for now I'd definitely go Strat though it's worth researching whether you want a maple fingerboard or rosewood. I love Teles too and I'd probably pick one of those as my desert island guitar - basically I'd think of Fender guitar acquisition in this order - Strat/Tele/Jazzmaster/Jaguar

@@lucasglll Nice. I also think it'll be a Strat for me. Thanks for sharing.

All those Fenders are beautiful and sound just great. What kind of bridge is on that jazz? Does it rock back and forth or is it stationary (like a mastery).
@StuartRyanMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, thanks for watching! This is Fender's RSD bridge, it's great and does rock back and forth. A friend has just put a Mastery on his JM so I'm going to check that one out soon too. All the best, Stuart

Like them all but can’t get away from the Tele sound.

Me too, love a good Tele!

Awesome playind and tone! Subscribed! I think the strat sounds more familiar to my ears, it's the most popular after all. But my post punk ethos craves for the JM

I know what you mean, I love all three but find myself recording with the Jazzmaster more and more! Best wishes, Stuart

Really great comparison, thanks for uploading! I’ve owned many Teles but I always end up getting rid of them...I guess I just find them more difficult to work with the way that I play. Strats and Jazzmasters are definitely more my thing, tonewise and ergonomically...I guess broader sounding to me than the always twangy Tele.
@StuartRyanMusic4 жыл бұрын
The Tele really is the 'twang box' though this one has a great neck pick up which is far more restrained. I know what you mean about them being overly bright, I've tried many of the years that have just had too much bite. All the best, Stuart

I want a jazzmaster even more now. Could get a good deal on the squire, but the tonal characteristics of the American are too good.

Hi! GREEEEAT VIDEO! I was wondering which strato model did you play...?
@StuartRyanMusic3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Luca! This is a Custom Shop John Cruz Masterdesign, I think it's based on a 1963 spec (check comments, I think I put more info in there!). Best wishes, Stuart

Great video. I'm trying to focus on learning some blues. Which would you pick for blues between the strat and the JM? Thanks Stuart! P.S. Hope your leg is all healed up.

Hi Jason, thanks for watching! I'd go Strat first for definite - Jazzmasters are wonderful and something to add later but the Strat will get you all those classic tones (Hendrix neck pickup etc) straight away. Also, the vibrato system on a Jazzmaster probably won't take aggressive blues playing as well as a Strat would. Obviously we need them all eventually though! ;) Ankle on the mend thank you, back walking the dog though still aching 4 months down the line...

StuartRyanMusic thanks for the recommendation. I’ll start showing my strat some love then. Cheers!

The Jazzmaster sounds more "hi-fi" but the other two have more character/personality, to my ears anyway.
