Will These Micro Jerkbaits Still Slay With Single Hooks?

The plan this session was to switch out the treble hooks for single hooks to see if it would affect my catch rate when targeting river species like chub and perch. It was a really fun session fishing the local river. The main target was big chub with the obvious chance of other predatory species like perch and pike. I caught plenty of fish really putting the single hooks to the test and as always the micro lures slayed it getting me loads of takes!

Enjoyed that, Following a bad incident with trebles and a large Perch I actually totally gave up fishing for many years, literally packed up my tackle & walked away I was that sick with myself. I started back probably 8 years ago first with coarse but eventually I gave Ultra light a go, the very first thing I did was to change out all the trebles to single barbless, yes I loose a few but I don't kill any that's whats important to me. Tight lines my friend

In Alaska the rivers get changed to single hook restrictions pretty regularly, so I change over all of my spinners and lures to single when I get them... So, I've been wondering about it for years and, I think the deeper gap of the single HELPS with hookups! I will add though, on my kwikfish and magwort lures I add an inch of swivel chain off the back hook and remove the front one with excellent results... as always, tight lines Chris! And the invite for next summer is still open. Cheers

you can change the treble to single in one operation. once you get the treble into the split ring, you just follow it with the single - one going on as the other comes off. I do this all the time and it's a lot less fiddly. I find my small floating lures are more buoyant with the singles and I sometimes use a hook with a hackle (like a mackerel feather) on the tail hook

Hi, first time commenting on any video ever. I would like to second the the person who made the comment about not using treble hooks, I really feel that none of us should be using them if we care about the fish we catch. I to only use single barbless hooks and just don’t see a difference in hooking rate and even if I were to to loose 10% of my hookups it’s just no the end of the world. I would like you to do a video on using barbless hooks as an experiment, same as you did when switching the trebles for singles in this video. I’m a new subscriber to your videos and I really enjoy. No reason not to use them. Well, i won't give up my triplets in the smallest of lures i have, which are anything between 1-2.5 cm long. The hooks are so small that without there being 3 of them, you won't get the fish up if it is decent sized, the hook is simply too small. But those triplets i have in use, i make sure they don't have the barb in them. Also i use only one hook, not 2. The one being in back of the lure. Works like a charm and in those smallest sizes, comes out as easily as one hooked one, if not even easier if the one hook is barbed. I mean the issue is the middle hook the lure has which causes it to go to eye etc. yet it is completely useless hook in small lures since the whole lure fits in the mouth of the fish and even if not, the back hook hooks only the mouth, it is the middle hook that injures them. It doesn't really matter is it triple or 1 hook, it will still damage the fish, no matter how you place it to the lure.
@elwooddestiny11blues20
@elwooddestiny11blues20 2 жыл бұрын
@@duhni4551 The lure i used was a 3cm Gunki lure . No middle hook at all . 2 tiny fine wire trebles front and back . Now i just use a single hook on the back . Each to their own . I use single hooks from now on and i debarb my hooks or buy barbless . I can live with losing a few fish .
@duhni4551
@duhni4551 2 жыл бұрын
@@elwooddestiny11blues20 In small lures the "front" is middle hook in my mind, as it is positioned in middle, not in front as it is in larger lures. But that doesn't matter, the point remains the same. Use only back hook and you have no issues of injuring fish with the extra ones. Yeah, what ever works, works =) That is how fishing goes =) I don't mind loosing them either, but loosing them isn't the point either ;)
@duhni4551
@duhni4551 2 жыл бұрын
@@elwooddestiny11blues20 I think i should mention that the original hook sizes was and still remains to be 12 and 14 in the smallest lures i have, they have 0 chance of keeping normal sized fish if it is only 1 hooked. Normally i use size 6 hooks as it keeps the most small ones off the lure, but then again the point of the smalles lures of mine is to get fish you won't get with larger hooks or lures. Dilemma of the life =)

Do you have to get the landowners permission to fish on those stretches? Finding it hard to fish on my local river as half of it is controlled by fisheries and I have been told you need the owner’s permission to fish the free bits but finding that info is challenging - should I just fish it and leave if I’m told to? If regulations allow it, don't be afraid to take a fish home if it's injured. Even chub make for a nice meal if you run the fillets through a meat grinder and make fish patties out of them. That being said, I switched to single hooks and barbless for several reasons, one of them being the easy unhooking while maintaining a hookup-to-landing rate similar to when I used barbed trebles.

I've changed >90% of my trebles to single siwash hooks in the last 2 years and as an avid trout fisherman, I'm pleased to have far less mangled catches which I can release. TOO many times a treble has pierced an eyeball, lip and through the face. I felt terrible knowing I HAD to release those fish (catch and release part of the river). Now we have better laws that require single barbless hooks in these waters and while I may lose a fish or two, the ones I do catch I can return in a moment. If I am fishing for FOOD while backpacking? I'll use a treble though the difference is small with catch %. I've changed the 5'6" ultralight with a fast action (casts light lures like a sniper) for a 7' medium action ultralight and it certainly helps me play a fish better. Cheers!

Great video. And thanks for doing this. I hate trebles. And I do think lure makers should be put under pressure to produce more lures with quality singles fitted as standard. I understand the place of trebles when taking fish for the table. As in typical sea fishing. But for catch and release barbless or micro barbed singles are the future I hope. Thanks again. Great work. 🐳👏👍

I would think singles would hook up better than trebles, all the force of the strike goes into one point, rather than 2 or even 3. When I came back to fishing a couple of years ago, I wanted to use double hooks for dead baits, like I always had before but couldn’t find them anywhere unfortunately. Going to try circle hooks when I go dead baiting again, no need for trebles these days.

Check out trout and UL lures, for example regular trout lure weighs about 3g and is about 3-5cm long. You won't find single hooked ones but with the most smallest ones but then again, you can always change the hooks your self, box of 26 hooks costs about 1-2 eur. (well in here, naturally prices can change regionally). Point being, won't break your bank.

Another good vid. I've been switching some trebles to doubles as well as weedless frog lures taking out the double and using a single extended to feet of legs. Chub were nipping the feet but not taking. First cast with new setup a fish. Out of interest in this vid you had a number of pike. Hooked in scissors so lucky not a bite off? Can't see a trace. One after unhooking the line was caught in mouth yet you pulled and it did bite thru. Is this fluro carbon and if so is it that much better? Even braid I've had bite offs and hate to think of pike with a lure stuck in it.
