Having just visited Sedona, can confirm, July hiking means starting before 6am and finishing before noon. Dodge the heat and the crowds!

It's so brutal here in the summer. You definitely can avoid a lot of crowds if you go in the off season, but you pay for it.

Great update. I would add that the Sedona Shuttle has a few different parking lots depending on which trailhead you're trying to get to. The Shuttle and parking lot are both free, which I think is AWESOME. I've taken it to Cathedral Rock and Soldier Pass. No way I would have found a parking spot at either trailhead. It's really neat that Sedona offers that without trying to nickel and dime people.

If you want to backpack into secret canyon and don't have a 4x4, an option is to hike in over sterling pass and past vultee arch. This addsbsome additional variety to the hike, and optionally you can also loop up bear sign canyon and over the david miller trail, then come back out the secret canyon trail before retracing your steps. Secret canyon was actually the first backpacking trip I ever did back in the late 90s. Back then you could get to the trailhead in a camry, the forest service has seemingly made a deliberate decision to let the road deteriorate to cut down on potential traffic

We hiked devils bridge, but somehow only saw one other person for an hour. It was beautiful but we got there at around 530am. Hiked the high clearance road in the pitch black and had a lovely breakfast with the friend we made on the walk. It sucks you slept in, its beautifully unique when its quiet ♥

Great video! For Soldiers Pass, if you can’t park there, there are many other trailheads you can park at that will connect to this trail. If you’re up for a long hike, I did Thunder Mountain Trailhead to Chimney Rock through to Soldiers Pass and Brins Mesa trail as a loop. It was 13 miles but you can do different shorter or longer variations. You could also just do Soldiers Pass and Brins Mesa as a shorter loop from the Soldiers Pass trailhead. Head out early and you can easily avoid crowds.

Good review Jerry. I’ve hiked a few of these. Appreciate how you warn us about the potentially very rough roads to a trail head, and how one needs a tough 4wd vehicle to handle it. By the way, what was the phone app I saw briefly in this video, black screen, which gave you elevation?

That's an app called Gaia. We use it as our GPS and have for years. I think it costs like $40~50 per year, but it works great.

Got to do Devil’s Bridge 3 years ago and we were fortunate tho unfortunate. It was mid to late June so brutally hot. Could not drive thru to get to off road parking as they had blocked because of the fires just south of there so it was a “enter at own risk”. Good part was that the crowd was thin. Hope to go back to visit some of these other places.

I'm here in July. 107 today. Pretty brutal. I went around the Twin Buttes this morning and was out by 9:00 am and it was really hot already! Can't believe that people are damaging native American ruins. Some people suck!

Yeah, it's discouraging. That's why I wanted to add in some messages about LNT; I like to think most of the damage is ignorance and not really done on purpose, especially with the petroglyphs. But knocking down that wall? No idea why anyone would do that.

One thing you didn't mention on West Fork is the parking. It is pretty much impossible to get in there anymore, unless you are real early in the morning. We pretty much gave up on it quite a while ago.

Huckaby trail is a great hike IF you start at the Shnebly Hill parking lot & go towards Midgley Bridge. Granted, you do see & hear the traffic after about a mile in. Great short cardio workout. 3 years ago there was NOT a que to get your pic on Devils Bridge, you just rolled with it.🤦‍♀️.

I second this opinion. There is a great overlook of Sedona downtown and the surrounding red rocks from the rim of the cliffs above Oak Creek that way.

I would agree a bit more with parting words if it wasn’t so trendy to come here. If I didn’t see so much litter. If I didn’t run into drunken yahoos disrespecting the land. If there wasn’t so much concrete. You may think I’m selfish but I long for what it use to be. Back then it was sacred. Land is for everyone to enjoy as long as it’s respected. Most haven’t seen it at its height of beauty. I have and that’s why I mourn for yesterday. Great vids!
