I have a smaller flashlight with a strobe feature that definitely will blind a person or get a driver's attention if you have a roadside emergency at night.

Thank you very much Matt!! I train with different flashlights on a regular basis. Your inspiration for self-defense is a blessing. Big one for indoor security as well, kubotan/yawara size to carry everywhere I go. Grateful you often have a lot of consideration for people with disabilities. God bless, Matt 🙏

Thanks for the memories in showing the MagLite. It has been a loooong time since I’ve been around MagLites but I don’t think that they ever converted to LED bulbs. (Oops, just checked Amazon and it looks like MagLite now makes LED versions. Or at least a company owning or licensed the name is making it.) I have LED flashlights throughout the house, in my pocket and in my bag so I always have one within arms reach. I use them all the time because low light vision decreases with age. Trying to see something under or behind furniture is much easier with a flashlight. BTW, and you probably know this, but they make large rechargeable batteries (18650, etc.) that will replace the adapter for AAA or AA batteries you showed in your small flashlight. My experience has been that they hold a charge longer than regular AAA or AA batteries. Best of luck with your hip replacement. I’ve know several people who have had them and they all regained full function without any limitations or pain.

I have two Bushnell tactical flashlights with crenulated bezels I carry on my security job for both illumination and self defense. My larger on is probably 700 to 800 lumens and my smaller one, probably about 500 or more lumens. I believe either one would be effective in a self defense scenario. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video. I hope the operation goes well and you are feeling better soon. I'm a big flashlight guy. I have all kinds of flashlights around the house. I love them all. I've heard mixed things about lights on handheld, ballistic, self-defense tools. Some people say that a light on the tool is a good idea. Others say that having the light separate from the tool is better because one can direct the light more effectively without necessarily pointing the tool at what needs to be illuminated. I have one tool with a light, but most do not have those lights. I try to practice with that tool while using a hand-held flashlight. Even if I'm practicing in daylight, I like to practice occasionally with the flashlight in my left hand, my wrists braced together, and my tool in my right hand. Sometimes, I'll even practice holding the illuminated flashlight and bracing my hands while trying to get the sights aligned with the center of the beam. If I could get proficient at that, the center of the beam becomes another sighting tool. Granted, I need to spend more time trying that technique before depending on that technique. In recent years, I've become more a fan of headlamps. When I was in Louisiana, I was six days without power, and a headlamp was a lifesaver. Having to go everywhere with one hand taken up with a flashlight would have been terrible. I also believe that everyone should have a headlamp in the car. While a headlamp isn't useful for self-defense, a headlamp is best for keeping both hands free when working on something. If I'm going to have something to light up an area that I must work, I'd rather have a light that features a panel of LED lights. I also prefer LED lamps that will recharge easily from a small solar panel. While I don't expect to live long in a survivalist situation, a solar-rechargeable headlamp would be valuable in that scenario. I also like small, cheap, lightweight flashlights that are rechargeable with a small solar panel. Again, the survivalist in me likes the idea of being able to recharge rather than go through disposable batteries. The EDC in my pocket is a tiny penlight. This light has no self-defense value. I just like it for having a light nearby. When I worked in the refinery, I had one that was intrinsically safe and was on a hook-and-loop closed lanyard around my neck. If I were in the refinery and needed to light something, I had it readily available. If I fell, the hook-and-loop closure would keep me from strangling on my lanyard. The intrinsically safe flashlight meant that my light would never be an ignition source if a surprise vapor cloud were nearby. In terms of a small flashlight with backup self-defense value, I think I'd still rather have the old mini-Mag. I don't change the batteries enough, and I don't think I have any left that haven't corroded shut. Occasionally, I find an old one and must throw it away. Even so, the diameter was right for weighting my fist. The length was right for giving a concentrated strike with a hammer fist. The lack of little bevels means that if I had to defend myself and hurt someone, no one would claim that my having a beveled from flashlight meant that I was looking to hurt someone. I have some of the little flashlights with the beveled fronts. I like them well enough. I tend to have more of them because they are cheaper than the classic mini-Mag. In a horrible situation, I'm just as happy with a mini-Mag. Just as I don't change my mini-Mag batteries enough, I don't change my regular Maglight batteries enough. I have one in the car, but I bet it's gone bad as well. The batteries have probably gone bad, leaked, and ruined the whole thing. From a familiarity point of view, I think I'd still rather have the old Maglight than the fancy new Husky. I was never trained on a Maglight as you were, but I know where the on/off switch is. I'm used to the feel of the thing. If I didn't have a handheld, wireless, ballistic, self-defense tool, my preference would be a cane in my left hand and some kind of bladed self-defense tool in my right hand. I'd probably just wear a headlamp to see. I don't know whether they are still available, but there was a company called Windless that was making bladed, self-defense tools about five years ago. They were modern adaptations of some traditional designs. They were a little smaller than machetes, but they were lighter and sharper. Several models were good for both thrusting and cutting. It's been a difficult few months for me personally. I haven't done my swinging club or staff training as I'd like. I have continued my walking very well. I've actually done over twenty-five inclined pushups a few times. That's a new high for me. I continue to do the sandbag squats and have gotten over twenty-five once or twice with them. I think I am a little stronger through the thighs, hips, and core. I have tried to be involved in politics, but that's been discouraging. There's a sense that one side is evil and the other is split between those too stupid to resist evil effectively and those to cowardly to resist evil at all. Obviously, that's an oversimplification, but I am discouraged. At times, I've slowed quite a bit in terms of doing what must be done, but I haven't stopped entirely.

Ah, the hip. A family member just did that 5 days ago and is recovering well. Used a newer anterior entry that is much less disruptive to the muscles, tendons, etc. The joint is immediately stable. In and out same day. Now starting PT. Best of luck. Don't rush back faster than your body wants to. (I'm assuming you don't idle well!).

I'm battling cancer and not as strong and muscular as I used to be but we have a pitbull that sleeps at the foot of our bed she is very well trained and besides the nightstand I keep a loaded AR-15 we don't have to worry about passing through walls because we don't have neighbors are children

Hi Matt, sorry i missed class, alot of family health issues going on When i carried "thumper" i put a piece of cardboard from a cereal box to form a sleeve liner in the D cell. It prevented the batteries, from rattling making the light solid and not make noise, so when going on calls where the battery noise could give away my presence. Also, i had to modify my donation method and will increase the "thanks" each time. Great to see you again. I will be looking for the classes. Stay safe. Doug.

Maglite makes an updated LED version of your old Maglite. THE ML150 it uses rechargable batteries, in a pinch 3 lithium C cells can power it. Comes in a kit with car and home recharging stations. The ML stands for military and Law Enforcement.

I personally like the 5 D cell maglight to carry in my vehicle. The 6D cell it's a little unwieldy for me... The 3D cell is pretty good but the five I find the best I purchased and installed a maglite brand LED bulb in my 5D cell.. never blow out and batteries last a lot longer plus much brighter than the original
