Which Hydraulic Crimper Should I Buy? (Weatherhead, Gates, Etc!)

One of my personal favorites was Gates GX32 or the old Omni Crimp. Didn't care for the positive stop machines such as weather head 420. I like the. Variable crimps. Mainly because I could crimp anything. Even if I had to come up with my on crimp spec. I used to teach classes and set customers up with crimpers. So I know a thing or two.

Can you use the crimper to crimp AN fittings.

My local hydraulic hose repair shop told me it was impossible to crimp a 4 wire 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 hydraulic hose properly with a portable crimper. I have a hose on my machine that slides through two rubber support blocks. Without having to take the machine apart, I thought I could have someone with a portable crimper press the fitting on after I slide the hose through the rubber support blocks. Let me know if this is possible. I had Pirtek mobile service come out and they said they could only press that size hose in their service van.

Whats the difference between fittings, gates, weatherhead .... etc? and whats the difference between dies and rings?

Great question Dean. If you were to look at the different brands of fittings like cars... Gates, Weatherhead, Parker all like Chevy, Ford, Etc. Then each company has their own styles of cars, trucks, vans, etc (Like fittings). So it basically depends on your preference and what you feel works best for you and your budget. We have a number of crimpers that can be adjusted to use multiple brands as well, but at the same time certain crimpers won't crimp certain brand of fittings unless you have the correct dies. OK so now I just read this off AG talk forum 2018 that said Eaton is scheduled to shut down production of those ends at the end of the year. Well that was 3 yrs ago. So what's the deal. I don't think any of my machines go over 3500 psi. Did he say V fittings or Z fittings?

Correct, Eaton did stop making the U series fittings and switched to the Z series fittings, but a company called Couplamatic picked up the ball and ran with it and continued producing a U Series Interchange Fitting in it's place... If I'm not mistaken you would use the 069e series. Which weatjerhead has a full line of ends and dies. If you are still looking. I have a source out of TN that sells used dies. Save you a little money. They usually have ends as well. I would stock the 069E series ends. With t hose type of ends you will use alot of Compression ends. So you could cut your tubing and just crimp the ends on. The you could attach your tubing back. Then just install your hose between. Simple as that. I have made a many of them..
