I hit the jackpot last March when I had a hose blow and called local Kubota dealer to get a replacement, and was informed they no longer made hoses, so I had to go to local hydraulic shop to get it. On the way there, it hit me to call Kubota back and ask what they did with their equipment. They told me it was all still sitting there, but he thought they were going to keep it to make their own hoses. Anyways, he offered to ask his supervisor what their plan was and then call me back. He called me back and said he was told to sell it all. I made him an offer, he ran it past his boss, and they accepted it. I was PUMPED! I got a Parker hydraulic crimping machine, all the dies, over 400 hose fittings AND a few hundred feet of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 hose combined for.......(I hope you're sitting down)............$1100. All total, once I ID'd everything and priced it out, I had over $5000 in equipment and supplies. Once I inventoried all the fittings, I kept what I would need and listed all the rest on Marketplace, and sold them for $600. So, my whole set-up cost me $500, and in just 9 months have made 7 hoses, which would have cost me approx $850 to buy. Machine has paid for itself in less than a year, and I still have a big inventory of fittings left. The biggest bonus, by FAR, is that I'm so remote, it would kill an entire day....sometimes 1.5 days to get a hose replaced, now it's done in about 30 minutes. WIN!

Hydraulic hose crimpers, hydraulic cable lug crimpers, tire machines, power hammers, any big stationary equipment really is for the most part better obtained for a self use case from someone on the used market. A whole lot of retiring mobile mechanics and shops have a lot of this equipment in working order(sometimes needing just a little TLC) for a real affordable price. In my experience when finding some of these deals for friends just starting out, these old timers are ecstatic seeing the start of someone's dreams in the trades or on the farm. A few times I've seen them happy to give this stuff away for free everyone that did that ends up visiting their old equipment with bright happy smiles seeing them go to good use, a couple of them just stop by to see if the thing needs to get repaired, dropping the tidbits of wisdom from years of ownership.

As for cutting the hose, a vice and a grinder with a cut off disc works well too. I've used that cutting braided hose like that to length. And a bench grinder to clean up the burs.

Great video Tim! When I was an apprentice in the late 1900's I used to make a lot of hydraulic hoses from 1/4" 2-wire hoses up to 2" 4-wire hoses that needed to be skived. We used an industrial belt drive Kalamazoo abrasive chop saw for cutting. Those 2 inchers would make quite a large cloud of stinky blue smoke when cut. I blew them out with air before crimping and then washed them out with Safety-Kleen solvent and blew them out with air again before assembling them on the machines. We had a Weatherhead and a Parker crimper with an electric powered hydraulic unit. Was much less complicated than your unit.

I bought a hydraulic press (Weatherhead Eaton T-400, hose and fittings when I first bought our farm.. I can go to ‘house of hose’ and get a $200 hose made in 2 hours after driving 3 hours round trip…or I can spend $50 in hose and fittings and throw it in the press. Total investment was about $2500 but I’ve made 7 hoses so far in five years and word gets around fast in a farming area that you can make hoses.. The benefit of a clean and straight cut is all about the fitting. My best work has been done with a 8 inch hand cable cutter with curved blades. If the full crimp isn’t around the full hose end then your high pressure hoses are either going to leak or break down sooner with side torque and vibration.

Very good video Tim, you hit the nail on the head. As I see in the comments already, and I agree, buying in bulk is the only way to do hydraulic hose cost effectively! I've made hoses in the past for several employers, and unless you make hoses constantly, or you're willing to offer late night hours, it's not something you're probably going to want to invest in. I personally have 2 hydraulic shops within 30mins of me, and they both are fantastic, so I wouldn't even consider investing in my own setup. Again, excellent video, you covered it better than I thought anyone has!

I did a cost benefit analysis, and I am sticking with the Field Replaceable Fittings, which you can get from DHT, but are available elsewhere, too. I buy my 2 wire hose in 100 ft lengths off of Ebay, which has worked great for me. I have all the advantages of your set up, without spending $11k. For the small time operator like me, this is the best deal. My local NAPA store makes hoses, but they are many times more expensive than DHT.

The person I use for hydraulic hoses said his liability insurance is very expensive. More than my liability insurance for my tree service. People also have to bring the hoses to him now, he said the insurance for the truck and trailer were very expensive also. He said he was worried at first about losing business, but he said he makes just as much not having to leave the shop. But he definitely knows his profession. Never a leak or blowout...unlike NAPA where 40% of my hoses leaking from the crimps. I do not need new hoses leaking on my bucket truck.

Love the video Tim! We make most of our own hoses at work (Public Works Dept) where we have many pieces of equipment and plow trucks. I can't imagine a homeowner investing that much money to make their own hoses. We need to have this equipment for (like you said) after hours, weekends and holidays. Great video. A barrier for me to order my hoses online is that I don't understand all the various fittings. It's easier for me to walk into my local supplier and say make me a hose just like this one. Wondering if in a future video you could educate us on the various fittings and threads. Just an idea.

That is my problem as well. I work with hydraulic fittings very infrequently. Usually only if something breaks or I'm working with a new implement. It absolutely blows my mind with all the different fitting types and sizes. So like you, I typically walk into the local hydraulic shop, lay my old hoses or old fittings on the counter and say "I need a X-inch hose to go from THIS to THAT". They guy goes into the back room and 10-mins later comes out with exactly what I needed. :-)

I have a cylinder which uses 3/4" elbows and I would like to use a smaller more flexible hose like perhaps 1/4". Is that possible?

@@eosjoe565 Its really hard to get technical in YT comments but yes you can put small fittings on larger hoses and large fittings on smaller hose. I regularly crimp 1/2 NPT and -08 ORB on 1/4" hose for kits we make. It's really all about what options the OEM hose supplier you choose has available, you really do NOT want to put one OEM's hose ends on another OEM's hose. If you contact DHH (or us) directly with details I'm sure we can help.

Not beating you up on building your hose, but the proper hose cleaning tool forces a projectile through the hose. Standard practice is to shoot one through after hose is cut, second once the ends are installed and a third the opposite direction. New hose is dirty and the metal wire is hot when cut so will melt into the rubber so won't come out with just air.

We have a cheap Dewalt chop saw at the shop, we really only use the chop saw for large hoses, at first -20 and up. We've since upgraded our hose saw so we can do up to -32 on the table and we don't use the chop saw as frequently. One of the United Rentals we make hoses for has a similar crimper in their shop, in fact a lot of our customers have their own crimpers and get bin stocked by either parker or whomever, it really doesn't effect our business too much because they have limited supply and that really shows for fittings outside of JIC and NPT and they don't have many jump sizes or higher pressure options. I agree with you about NPT, its antiquated, sorry plumbers/sprinkler boys. I'd recommend a hose assembly lubricant like P-80, I'm sure parker and eaton have their own blend as well. We use a depth gauge (basically just a bunch of pieces of pipe/tubing cut to the depth length for each ferrule size for easy marking. Also would recommend shooting a cleaning pellet or a wad of wipeall or something through the hose before you put your fittings on, especially if your using a chop saw. You'll visually see how much rubber your getting out of there, the brand we use is Ultra Clean, the gun is nice but you can get by with a fat rubber tip for all hoses up to -16 typically. I think your dead on though as far as the cost vs benefit, you really need to be making a lot of hoses for it to be worth it, its gonna be a while until you see a return on investment.

Back in the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's, I worked at Nuclear Power Plants, and we had Parker Hannifin hoses, fittings, crimping machine, and cut-off machine. Everything had an electric motor on it. It was a simple job. We made all sorts of hydraulic hoses, and high pressure water and steam hoses. Our equipment was mounted to a large Knaack box on wheels, so we could roll it to job sites if needed.

Great video. I use surplus center to order all my hydraulics. You can't beat the price of their premade hoses nor fittings. Hydraulics in general are expensive. I just replaced my FEL valve bc the Brand valve has too much internal leakage even though I bought it new in 2019. The metro 3spool valve was $325 (will use 3rd spool for toplink and grapple bucket). Probably spent nearly that much in hoses and fittings too! Plus a pressure gauge so I can set the relief valve. I've probably spent total $1500-$2k on hydraulics the past several years but learned a lot and would've cost way more to go to local shop to have hoses made.

I have use Apache reusable twist on fittings on Apache hose. I rebuilt a k650 kubota backhoe, replacing all hoses and fittings with Apache. I ran it 10 years before selling. I wonder if anyone else has good or bad experience with them?

Fortunately the hyd shop is only 12 miles away and have great hrs of operation. In no way would I want to do the fabrication of the hoses with the high pressure risk involved. @@michaelwhitehead1373 yessir. Many hoses crimped now. No failures. Also, I have experimented by crimping beyond the specs. …and THAT failed. (I didn’t even apply pressure as the failure was visually obvious). Anyway, my point is that crimping to spec produces a perfect crimp, easily inspected. BTW, the hoses purchased from DHH have crimps that look IDENTICAL to the crimps I do with this machine. Please don’t misunderstand me. For low volumes, and especially if you are nervous about it, purchasing complete assemblies from DHH is your best bet. For most folks, this is more cost effective as well!

Locally in a 2500 population rural town, we have three places who will make custom hoses. So, I can’t see it making economical sense to me. That said, a freind of my younger brother, who he met through the Air National Guard, did all the hydraulics on their jets. The Guard, decided to get him a new hydraulics van complete with new crimpers, cutters, etc. Se he bought the old van through a GSA auction, and went into business in Las Vegas, making hydraulic repairs for contractors. He had a shop where he could rebuild cylinders, but his bread and butter was fixing heavy equipment. He has made a comfortable living for over thirty years now.

had a crimper (1980's vintage) and by the time you buy even small rolls of assorted size hose and a selection of 3 dozen or more different fittings the pay back just isn't there. But if you are out in the middle of nowhere and a busted hose puts you down for a couple of weeks then it's a must have.

When We fabricated those Metal braided Fuel lines for My Buddies Dragster He showed Me that using Black (or any color) Vinyl tape at the cut location it helped keep the wires from fraying. That might help?

FYI, Your crimp tolerance is listed in the header row of the table. For your case, it was +/- 0.005" or 0.13mm.. An acceptable crimp would have fall between 18.66 an 18.92. Where you measure that from, is anyones guess.. possibly the flats..

My hoses wait till the weekend to bust so I bought a used weatherhead and haven't busted a hose since HA! You can send a pig or wad through your finished hose with compressed air to clean out all the trash...i use white lint free heavy duty paper towel pieces and keep blowing those through until they come out clean. ..... you'd be surprised how much junk is in a new hose. As far as cutting your hose, it's kinda important to have a clean square cut. Although my crimper is electric, I kinda like the idea of the manual one you have. I did sell a hose I made but like you said, i'll have to sell hundreds more to break even. The way I see it, it's a $3k hose insurance policy having a crimper. Great video Tim!

When i make a hose, I'll dip a finger in some grease and put a light film on the barb end if reachable or just inside the hose and it'll go together so much easier and be more likely to get fully seated. I've seen a lot of hose failures where someone dry fit and thought that they got it together "good enough" but they were just unable to physically get it fully together and crimped it anyway.

I used to make Cat hoses at work. It sucked. The ends and fitings you can reuse if not rusted bad. Told customers to come back in hour or two. Nope. They would stick around breathing down your neck. @@MrRatkilryea you have to keep so many available just in case that one guy comes in..it’s crazy how many we kept around for all the different machines. I worked at JD and it wasn’t as bad as they only kept stuff for Deere equipment. I hated when customers would stand there and watch you! And they always brought them in full of hydraulic oil, like man just let it drain for a couple minutes!!

Awesome video Tim, I think you covered all aspects very well. You may have even created a few new businerss ventures. Having a few businesses of my own, your emphasis on the imortance of the service side of the business was spot on. It would be a big failure if you just wanted to work 9-5 Monday thru Friday. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort (24/7) to be successful in a new venture like this

Harbor Freight sells a carbide tip metal cutting blade that should not deflect like the one that comes with that saw. At work we had a cut off with the fiber blade and it would deflect and cut crooked so its not Harbor Freights fault.

You have to be very careful. Carbide blades cannot be used on an abrasive saw. The carbide toothed metal cutting blades are designed to spin around 1500 RPM whereas an abrasive saw spins around 4000 RPM.

If you don't use an actual hose blade intended to for hose, you'll end up destroying your pumps and mucking up your valves. At the very least you should be blowing foam pellets from each end, not just air...it does nothing. The NPT fittings you crimped, are they bubble crimp or full crimp because if they are bubble crimp you should let people know of the markings on the ferules indicating where to place the fitting in the dies.

My backhoe ripped one of the Dipper hoses and it was $106 from the Dealer and $106 from the Hydraulic company. A hose that was over 10 feet long. I found out it cost almost the same to have a local hose company build a New Hydraulic hose as it would have cost from the Dealer/Manufacturer. They used the damaged hose and built the new one in less than 30 minutes. Faster than ordering it. Great Video Thanks

If you want to see expensive hose, take a look at some of the large hoses on dozers and excavators. A 2-inch hose that's 3-feet long with rigid ends can cost $500-$600 to have made.

How much are the materials? Recently had four short hoses made (~2ft), and it was close to $300. I'd spend $1200 for a crimper (found others similar to yours) if it would pay for itself in 10 hoses and not 100. Has anyone done the math already?
