My daughter has an iPad 10, got it for her a year ago ($150 more than current price) and it’s a tablet I would recommend for the price - it will be in service for a while. As for future proofing: Apple has shown after 7 years they will end support for iPadOS. I have an old 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” and they just ended support - even though the 2018 iPad Air has similar specs (A10 only chip) and it is still supported.

i would personally buy the ipad air 5 instead of ipad 10, its a way better ipad in basically every way, better m1 chip with 2 extra cpu cores, 4 extra gpu cores and 2x the ram, laminated screen with smaller bezels and antireflective coating, faster usbc port, apple pencil 2 support and all that, its way better

IMO, I am still using iPad Pro 12.9 from 2018, and it still serves me really really well. Still receives OS updates, and the system still feels fairly fast (no lag, no delay).

Do not sleep on the gen 9 because the difference between the gen 9 and gen 10 is very small. You can get the gen 9 for under 200 bucks and it still is getting updates and has the latest os I have the gen 9 and the gen 10 so I obviously use both. Now as far as the other ones I can't say anything.

m1/m2 ipad pros are the way to go, only advantage of the m2 air is the support for the apple pencil pro. Otherwise you get more for your money with the „old“ Pro‘s.

I wanted to upgrade from my iPad 10 256gb. I spent a week watching reviews trying to decide. I ended up getting the 11 inch M2 iPad Pro 512gb cellular for $899. I’m very happy so far. I wanted something more powerful for games and a higher refresh rate for drawing in procreate. I considered the M2 air, but I felt the M2 Pro cellular was a far better deal for around the same price since it was on sale at Best Buy. I also considered the new M4 Pros, but for the same storage, that’s was significantly more expensive and the M2 is still a very capable chip.

This was a very nice overview of Apple's current iPad lineup. Except for the fact that, you talked about my basic iPad 9th generation model. If this is your first iPad then, I suggest starting with the basic iPad 10th generation model (with 256GB) and if, you need more capability then in a future year, just upgrade to an iPad Air or iPad pro version (smile ... smile).

Thanks for mentioning the AI future proofing of the M4. The deciding factor for me to get the M4 was the large jump in trillions of operations per second (TOPS) of the M4’s Neural Engine. I think AI will be ubiquitous in these devices over the next few years.

m2 ipad pro is a better deal then m2 ipad air, its a very similar price and u get promotion display, 10 core gpu m2 chip instead of 9 core, bigger display, thunderbolt 4 port, face id, much better quad speakers, and other things, the biggest advantage with the m2 ipad air is the apple pencil pro but if u dont use that then ipad pro m2 is much better

Since release I have been using the M1 11inch iPad Pro I came to USA for a holiday and picked up the refurbished magic keyboard from amazon still its not a Mac replacement but its really closer with the magic keyboard. I was also thinking about the esr keyboards but since there is a refurbished option for a first party keyboard for this price point its a steal. Still rocking the M1 iPad Pro its great overall still an option if you find one for real cheap compared to M2 or M4 versions (there is none to little difference between m2 and m1 ipad pro’s)

The iPad Pro m2 or m1 is the one to get. Right now the m1 and m2 are within $100 difference, for longevity the m2 is probably better. No one should be looking at the iPad airs, get a used m1 or m2 pro.
