The Termites weren't an external threat to the colony. They had peace with the ants, but the General ordered a war in order to get rid of soldiers loyal to the Queen. They were acting in self-defense.

Depending how you read the scene; the Termites were actually incursing upon Ant territory, and General Mandible mooted the queen's notion of sending a diplomatic envoy (to negotiate, as they'd been doing successfully prior to then) because he knew it was the oppotunity he needed to eliminate the troops least likely to side with him.

I noticed that the bird plan ultimately failed because scaring an enemy with the false promise of a bigger threat is exactly what the Grasshoppers did, which would've made the ants' goal hypocritical if it actually worked.

As I got older I realized a bugs life was based on the story called the ant and the grasshopper. The ant during the summer and fall spends his time collecting food and supplies to get ready for winter while the grasshoppers tells the ant to have fun and it can wait but the ant tells him he doesnt have time and it's always good to be prepared. The grasshopper doesnt care for the warning and waste his time playing instead of preparing so when winter comes he has nothing and begs the ant for food and shelter. A bugs lifestyle twist the story a bit by the fact the grasshoppers are lazy and force the ants to do the work before winter. The grasshopper get to have fun while the ants are forced to do extra labor

I too, have nostalgic attachment to A Bug's Life. But one thing that always bothered me about it, is it's "liar reveal" scene; where Flik is made to feel ashamed for not telling the colony that his friends were circus bugs all along. Even as a kid, I felt Flik had no choice but to keep the lie going because the colony would never give him a chance otherwise. If he had told the truth, he would've gone right back to being a loser and an outcast. All he wanted was to be accepted, so of course he wouldn't want to give that up #Flikdidnothingwrong
@sarahsims6164
@sarahsims6164 3 жыл бұрын
Tell me about it, not to mention the fact that Flik was also forced to think that his idea wouldn't work when it was actually freaking BRILLIANT. He had the whole right logic all along, but all the other ants (sans Dot) just wanted to keep sucking up to those grasshoppers. To this day I still can't stand that scene, especially since it detracts from that amazing heartfelt earlier one where Atta admits how she herself feels insecure as she prepares to become queen. #Flikdidnothingwrong
@zeonianking2983
@zeonianking2983 3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahsims6164 I forgot to mention that the main reason they let Flik leave the island to get help in the first place was to get rid of him. I wish that was addressed too. Honestly, I feel this scene could have worked if instead of feeling ashamed, Flik stood up for his beliefs and his friends. They may have been circus bugs, but they had proven their worth time and time again. And when princess Atta tells Flik to leave and never come back, he responds with a sarcastic "with pleasure, your highness" as sort of a kid friendly f**k you to her and the colony.
@sarahsims6164
@sarahsims6164 3 жыл бұрын

@zeonianking2983 3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahsims6164 I think this would cause a change to a following scene; where Dot has to convince Flik and the others to come back and save the colony from Hopper. Bug's Life is a parody of Samurai 7/Magnificent 7. A group of warriors with large personalities help peasants fend off bandits that come each year to steal their harvest. The major theme being that the warriors help the peasants learn the strength they have within themselves, enabling them to defend themselves in the future. The twist being that the warriors are total frauds in Bug's life. One of the sad things about those movies was that the bandits were former soldiers that were abandoned by their governments, left to fend for themselves and had to turn to banditry to survive. The Samurai that assisted the peasants were in the same boat, but instead of turning to villainy they decide to hold on to their honor and fight for what's right.
@vladthecon
@vladthecon 2 жыл бұрын
2 things i liked about that film were that the peasants were absolutely terrified of the heavy cavalry even after they killed most of them and that at the end they point out how the manipulative peasants made the honorable samurai sell their lives for a few bowls of food while they kept all their loot and lives.

Isn't that Jeffrey Katzenberg the same guy who is responsible on why _The Black Cauldron_ had failed at the box office? The film was originally supposed to be darker as the first R-Rated Disney film (or in this case, PG rated), but later Jeffrey joined in and cut down the content because it's too scary for kids. Adding insult to injury is that _The Care Bears_ movie is more successful than the Black Cauldron in the box office, which it remained in the theaters for 3 months. (Like cute sugary-sweet animals beats creepy evil villains with sunshine and rainbows)

I dont really think that the concept of "who wanted to make a bug movie first" can really be debated considering that katenzburg went on to copy the concepts of several other movies to follow (ie finding nemo/shark tale) to confuse general audiences and ride the coattails of other companies. i do feel bad for the artists who worked for dreamworks to make these movies though, as they put lots of work into making something to be proud of, but it will be seen by many as simply a cheap knockoff. corporate in this case is definitely doing some scummy idea stealing, but i hope the lower level workers who made it are happy with what they created, as the work they did certainly is nothing to scoff at

I grew up with both of these movies, and as always I love hearing your thouights on these ^^ I love both these movies for different reasons tbh. I agree with everything you said about A Bugs Life but I disagree with a few things you said about Antz. I think I identify with and enjoy Antz because even when I was little I was an outcast. Living with undiagnosed autism, ADHD and CPTSD since I was 4 (when this movie came out) made the world seem a lot like the world in Antz. And as I grew up I found that the government in my country were doin the same thing in the villians of the story. They want to wipe out people they deem weak and useless, people with mental illnesses, neurodivergent people, disabled people,. Hell, over Covid the current political leaders basically admitted they were hoping the disease would kill off the "burden" of disabled people like me because all they see us as is a drain on resorces, which is why they refused to put restrictions in place even after the US started to. I dont think Antz is as much about a dictatorship as it is about what society can feel like when you are incapable of falling in line with arbitrary rules that were made only with the "default settings" people in the world in mind, IE: neurotypical, able-bodied people who will take orders and accept poor pay for their work without question or complaint. I dont think the end is supposed to be about finding an idealised capitalist life, but in finding a life where people can choose their own fate and regardless of physical/mental ability or wants in life, they have the opportunity to choose what they want in life and look after their personal needs and mental health while still benefiting the society they are a part of. But that's just what I see from where I'm standing I guess. Loved the video as always and sorry for this mile long comment XD x

I was always curious about a bug's life growing up because I saw commercials for it in front of other pictures but the movie itself was never made accessible to me. YET Antz was every where and I did end up watching it. It wasn't memorable enough to stick with me but my lingering questions of a bug's life remain. This video has convinced me to check it out! Thanks. P.S. I really appreciate your style of cinematic breakdowns and how you never take a hostile or My Opinion is Better Than Yours and is the only one you should Believe Approach. It's refreshing, and really encourages a more level and fair assessment of content in my opinion. So, thank you for that. I feel it personally helps me be fairer to others I disagree with tbh.

i remember projecting Hard onto Flik, like i really felt like i had to turn down my hobbies and preferences in order to fit in, no matter how much i wanted to belong in the crowd. i do want to point out that for some reason my parents, especially my father, used to enjoy antz a lot more than i did when i was a kid. in that sense i feel like antz was done... with a less "family friendly" approach than a bugs life, and that is pretty evident both in its humour and the darker subjects it touches on. that probably was a reason why i enjoyed a bugs life more, because it had a simpler story and two very defined groups, grasshoppers vs ants, that was easy for a kid like me to identify. also, perhaps there is something to be said about how a child may identify more strongly with a main character who is bullied or seen as an outsider but still wants to belong and fit in the larger community, and how an adult might relate better with an alienated worker who finds no joy in his rutinary work and thinks that even those who say that they enjoy the grueling grind are lying just to keep face. in that sense, i do feel like the worst thing about antz is the wasted potential to be a more focused parable on the dangers of a society so focused on labor that it completely destroys the ability of its workers to enjoy the fruits of it. it is inherently difficult to do so without reestructuring how actual ants work in real life, since that would mean a defying of the status quo in which sectors are so clearly delineated by birth... which the movie antz doesnt really blame on anything, keeping it more as a dark joke, while pointing the problem towards the military authority, not the system itself that generated that military authority; after all, if there are outside threats, what will the ants do to prevent it? will they eschew all birth-assigned jobs? will they keep having a military that could potentially hoard power and have a puppet government? will they overthrow the queen and create a commune? who knows! (also, what was the plan of the general in antz? kill all the workers? is he that stupid to think he would last long without those who actually do the labor in the colony? who wrote this movie???)

Megalomaniacs like Mandible are Social Darwinists who believe once the ants they deem as strong enough to become soldiers are the only ones remaining that there will be nothing challenging their rule and they will be protected from any forces that could harm them. Except that soldier ants can't become worker ants, so Mandible's reign will not last long without a clear means of production to control for the survival of those he deems worthy of receiving societal benefits (like himself). His actions are virtually pointless, but that's the whole idea. He is so arrogant to believe he could survive without the workers and with only an army and rebuild society anew that he does not even consider the consequences. Totalitarians have the same viewpoint, and I resent that this film would be seen as a Red Scare film for portraying both what Hitler and the Castros and Stalin alike did under what was not actually socialism but state capitalism. These men believe in utilitarian values that they claim are inherently selfless, but they are entirely devoted to having all the efforts of their citizens selfishly dedicated to them alone. Venture capitalists and the top brass are all like this. Fascism is the end goal of capitalism (though a dictatorship of the proletariat will merely continue the cycle of oppression and scarcity/privatization under new hands that initially only created yet never owned anything). Though ironically their actions create a completely different status quo that will be very unsustainable in the long run (Hitler literally bankrupted Germany again by continuing the war, and I think of the richest men alive today and how if they do allow us to die they won't have infinite resources available to them that can continue being replenished so that they can continue to survive. Which makes me view them as a suicide cult that wants to outlive us even if they know they're not immortal and never will be. None of that matters because of how determined enough they are to let us die before them even if that is their fate). I do agree that Antz doesn't go far enough with suggesting how the rich would survive, what will the colony do without its army and it doesn't really say the monarchy is bad, but the motivations of the villain are pretty clear. I think its why Z still offers his hand to the man that tried to kill him and all the other ants trying to save themselves. He knows that for all the horrible things Mandible has done, they still can't exist without one another. Unfortunately this lens doesn't actually work in human terms, because the rich have already reaped the resources provided by their workers for their own self-preservation. However, naive as it may be, it always struck me that Z's journey from being isolated from society and simply treated as another one in the chain/cog in the machine culminates in this moment where he even tries to compromise with his oppressors, futile as that may be.

With Antz, it's all about balance. okay with a community you can be proud of. The "paradise" Z finds isn't true paradise because you can't run away from your problems and live a life without purpose. There's issues when living in a society. It's not all cupcakes and rainbows. There's war, theirs diplomacy, but you have to find a way to juggle these issues in the proper manner. At the start of the movie, it's clear that reducing yourself to a mindless drone devoid of any individuality is no way for anyone to live and live happily. Flick didn't have to do any self growth, he was already in that mentality. Z had to realize that, as much as he wanted to live free, he also had to find that proper balance between being himself and being part of that community. In a way, you could say that Antz is a sort of prequel to A Bug's Life.

I like Antz more. Saw them both in the theater as a child, and Antz unapologetic weirdness just really has a special place in my heart. I'm a sucker for weird stuff, and A Bugs Life was just too much of a typical kids movie for my discerning taste at 8 years old.

Had no money for Disney movies as a kid, but they showed Antz on the TV several times, so I got to see it many times as a kid. Never seen a Bug's Life xD Sure I don't remember much of Antz since it's been probably like... 15 years since I last saw it, but I di remember some scenes (the termite fight, the outside world, buff mining friend ant & the ending sequence with the water and teamwork) I think the middle part with the journey outside never really quite got me, but the stuff that happened inside the colony felt exiting, mature and cool in its own way. Was probably because of that termite war & the 'let's kill the weak ones' kinda bits, those are not exactly soft things for kids to see xD Yeah Antz isn't a masterpiece, but it's not a bad movie either. I like the 'let people have a choice, they'll be happier for it' kinda message. If you want to have parallels, you could say a Bug's Life has a colony that lets Flick do his invention things. They throw him out rather than forcefully keep him in to convert him to do what everyone else does - if you want to see it that way. But I do also like the 'if you work together, you can achieve great things' which is what both movies have in the end Both have and like individuality, both have team work in good light. They just choose to focus on different angles~

A bug’s life is better IMO 1. It Doesn’t try too hard to look grim and scary 2. You don’t need a grim and dark world to make a social commentary on power and control, it can be as simple as ants gathering food 3. The characters aren’t ugly as hell 4. There’s no adult references every 10 seconds

You make a very good point of Z not learning anything by the end of his movie. He's selfish at the beginning and selfish at the end, whereas Flik is selfless at the beginning and shunned for it, but his ideas are embraced by the end and he at least appreciates the importance of community and teamwork. It's one to be unhappy in a bad job, like Z, but another to fight for your community, like Flik. At the end of the movie, it's the workers who save themselves from themselves in Antz AND A Bug's Life from their oppressors, NOT the main character. The hero of these stories are the united masses.

Great analysis. I'm more of the A Bugs Life side. I like the characters, setting, story, visuals, humor and message, and it's always a blast to re-watch it whenever a special occasion... Antz on the other hand, I don't really like it. It's very disgusting looking, with it's inconsistent tone and story, it's mostly unfunny and terrifying and didn't care any of the characters. But I like how you explained what the movie is trying to say about the importance of individuality. Still, I'm in Bugs Life side for life nonetheless.

3:32 I wouldn't say that's where the similarities end at all: They both have a political theme of class struggle, the ants being the workers, the royal family being the richest, and the general in Antz and Hopper in A Bug's Life being the evil billionaire-like characters who want to take all the power or food (currency), respectively, for themselves. Edit: 3:57 Ah! Sorry. :D

As a person who had Antz on VHS, it depends what you're exposed to first. Personally I feel a bug's life is boring and flick makes me want to step on him with the way he laughs and talk. Antz, is weird and mature, but "ye-OUch" and the heavy realistic bug death will top scary grasshopper man and feral other grasshopper. Only thing I liked about Abl was the Mantis/moth couple, the spider, ladybug, and "poopoo platter". Antz was all over, but It was eventful, and they used a lot of scientifically accurate insect things, like ant ladders, and living with a severed head, smaller insects being their drinks, (alcoholic) Being insignificant, tunnel flooding, wasps being around picnics. Except for the main character male ant being small and weak, next to the other macho buff male ants, which would have been female, there is one female worker, and she was kickass, but it wasn't enough. Honestly the ants in Antz are really diverse, Zee could easily fit a trans, nb or intersex role along with others. Antz is more accurate in the sense ants have colonies, and they play into that whole war thing that ants commonly do, because they really are stronge in numbers and attack other colonies. A bug's life makes ants look weak and submissive, when they'd realistically flambe those grasshoppers

What I like about Z over Flik is Z could be anyone, he isn’t unique or talented. He isn’t special because he can do something others cant, he has inherent self worth and discovers personal autonomy. I feel Antz hints a lot more to self realisation than A bugs life.

Bug's Life and Antz, along first two Toy Story movies, were the first CGI animated movies that I have seen as a young child before Shrek was released. I used to like both of them when I was kid but as grown up I don't care much about neither of them. But there's a bug movie that I prefer over Bug's Life and Antz, The Bee Movie. The Bee Movie is more leftist than Bug's Life because the bees live in a society that is a community of worker bees and isn't ruled by any monarch. Also some of villains are human capitalists. I do knowledge how The Bee Movie demonizes people with allergy towards bees which isn't cool at all.

A Bug's Life was one of many Disney movies I watched once as a kid and got too scared to watch again due to a giant monster scene. That being the bird. Despite it not being in the game yet, I started watching it again after playing Kingdom Hearts. After that, to this day it is still one of my favorite Pixar movies and tbh the Pixar movie I want most in a future Kingdom Hearts title now that we got Toy Story. As for Antz, I've only seen it maybe 3-4 times and only once from beginning to end. Not cause I didn't like it, but because I never had the VHS at home, so the only time I ever saw it was whenever it was on TV or at a friend's/cousin's house. I did enjoy the movie, I just don't have any nostalgic attachment towards it like A Bug's Life. TL;DR A Bug's Life>Antz is my final answer

Quite the contrary in terms of the designs. While I'm the camp that thinks A Bug's Life is better, I could understand some preferring Antz more, despite its inconsistent tone, but really you're telling me that human looking faces on the ants are less weird than cartoon-ish looking faces. I mean that's almost like saying the designs in Finding Nemo are wierder than the designs in Shark Tale.
