Most of the film's budget went into animating Steel alone. It's like if Jared Leto went method by literally turning himself into a cartoon husky whose sole character traits are cocaine and malice.

I love that balto wasnt completly inmune to stress, like he wasn’t a simple good boy, actually he acts exactly like steele at one point, when he is so desperate of being lost that he basically makes everyone even more lost and almost breaks the medicine... i just love that, it was a normal reaction to feel stressed in that situation, coz if they only showed steele all crazy, and not balto as well, it would seem like they were tryna say that you should be inmune to stress and act all put together always. It’s okay, balto loses his shit as well

Small thing I like about this movie: Balto doesn't know his place in the world and has to find himself, as an ADULT. Most movies about self acceptance are from child or teen perspectives; but here we see someone fully grown, even if he's an animal, still learning to be who they are and be accepted is really nice to see.

Oh god. I remember Balto, but for the worst reasons. Back in primary school, every friday afternoon right before the end of the classes, the teachers would take us to the movie room to watch like, 15 minutes of Balto. Then, at some point, one of my classmates and friends gave the teachers... The 2005 horror movie (at least by eight years old standards) The Brothers Grimm. The teachers started alternating. Every other week Balto, every other week a film that was literally giving my classmates nightmares (look up the Sasha turning into a gingerbread man scene). When I told this to my mom, she looked into the movie, discovered it was definitely inappropriate to show to a bunch of kids, wrote a letter to the principal and handed it to me to give. So I did. I did at class, because this was a tiny school and the principal was our co-teacher. I probably also said something dumb along with it, because I was a damn kid. The solution to the problem the teachers chose was to declare to the class there and then that there would not be any movie time this afternoon, and that everyone had me to thank me for it (not kidding, I'm paraphrasing because happened in another language but they genuinely singled me out). While, in the room next door, the other class were watching Balto, they made us do math exercises. I legitimately still remember the looks of hatred my classmates gave me all throughout. I was ashamed of myself for... trying to help people not get nightmares. And I'm pretty sure that was the seed that lead to the bullying I got in middle and high school. (Well, that and being neurodivergent I suppose.) The teacher then went on to run for mayor, and got very pissed in his newspaper interview when he lost. Idk. Is it appropriate of me to consider that an instance where I was bullied by a grown ass adult? Processing trauma is weird.
@mattpluzhnikov519
@mattpluzhnikov519 3 жыл бұрын
Your story is deeply upsetting, and I am SO sorry that your teacher AND principal were so inconsiderate, AND that none of the adults had the sense to realize that Brothers Grimm was NOT for children. You working to process it is great, though, cause feeling (a bit?) traumatized by your whole class ostracizing you that way IS valid.

The character of balto is such a real feeling and well written one. When he is lost due to Steele’s tracks he goes through the exact same frustrations and hardships that Steele has- even rushing through the snow and slipping on the ice like Steele does- it shows that our hero is definitely not a Mary Sue, and that the only thing that kept him from making the same mistake is his clearheadedness. Any other character main character would get the medicine home with no issue- the fact that balto has those issues makes him feel even more real. Also I love the very small detail when balto and the team are walking up a steep hill- balto uses a small sapling to pull himself along, uprooting it in the process. As he passes the sapling he replants it again so it can continue its growth. This small detail is a beautiful one which really characterizes balto.

Fun fact: Balto didn’t even run most of the serum run, it was a dog named Togo and Balto just got all the glory because he finished the race (also my name is Jenna which was one reason I adored this movie as a kid)
@chickennuggetpaw
@chickennuggetpaw 3 жыл бұрын
In my 4th grade class, we read 2 stories about this “Balto” dog. The first one was about the real dog who carried the medicine, Togo the husky, and how another dog called Balto got all the credit. Then we read a second one that was saying Balto was the one who carried the medicine. I think it was supposed to be about how 2 sources can say complete opposite information, and to be careful where you get information from. Long story short, our whole class HATED Balto with a passion because he got all the credit for what Togo did. So, no. I will never, ever forget Balto. (Yes I’m still a little salty about it)
@EclipseHedgehog
@EclipseHedgehog 2 жыл бұрын
It saddens me that so many people to this day hate the real Balto when it wasn't his fault for getting all the credit, he's a dog. He never asked for the credit, fame or glory and simply did what his master told him to do. Heck, Togo probably would have died had Balto not taken over as the sources said he traveled the longest and most dangerous route. The mission was to get the medicine to the town regardless who got there first. One of the teams lost their lead, and the musher had to tie himself to the sled and pull with the rest of the team. Another got stuck on the ice, and the musher had to dig it out, burning his hands in the process. do they get a statue or mention? Nope it was all Togo, Togo, Togo. The way I see it, and how it SHOULD be seen by mature eye's; Everyone's a hero who took place during that run from the very last dog on the last team to make it back to Nome, especially the one's who didn't make it. Hating on Balto is pointless as the poor dog suffered through his last years being sold and put on in a freak show where he and the other dogs were abused until the last of their days never seeing his home in Alaska ever again. It's quite tragic.

I actually resonate with Balto's struggle of having duel identity as someone who has more than one cultural identity. It's hard fitting with two simaltainiously mostly because of the environment that one would grow up in. I may have a preference but that doesn't mean I'd be welcomed right away or be able to fit in for lack of language and knowledge of certain types of manners. Also, people automatically assume something about you without asking.

I vaguely recall the scene where Steele stomps on Balto's paw and he lets out a growl. I, a young child at the time of seeing that for the first time, assumed that something about Balto's teeth was what clued them in on the part wolf thing. Then again I didn't know much about wolf/dog genetics.

I think it's more that it reminded them of the town rumor. I suspect that a combo of visible characteristics - build, paws, ears, tail, and perhaps the knowledge that his father disappeared into the woods and yet none of the town's female dogs were his mother lead them to suspect. An actual husky and an actual wolf only look alike when cartoons smooth them out - the difference would be visible, and in such a small place, everyone knows whose dogs are whose- or arent anyone's. What i want to know is how Balto ended up in town instead of raised as a wolf without someone killing his mom and finding the litter or something. Probably he got lost/separated.

I adored this film as a kid, the second one with Baltos daughter too. I know why they designed Balto as a bit smaller than Steele but its funny to think if they had designed him looking like a real 50+% wolfdog, he'd mostly be the same size as a real wolf and tower over Steele and it would ve very easy for the townspeople to tell he wasnt a regular stray husky

This movie has some very good animation and character desings are mostly pleasing. The plot is OK, but I always thought that Steele comes out in the end little too evil, not even caring if all those kids die as long as no-one takes his spot in the limelight - to be honest, I simply can't believe that any dog could ever be even slightest of bit mean spirited!

My pet theory is that anyone who hyperfixated on Balto, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Last Unicorn, and/or All Dogs Go to Heaven as a kid has a high likelihood of now being a depressed bisexual studying/working in a field related to animals or the environment. I am example A for this theory.

I don't know about hyperfixated, but I did very much enjoy three of these four, especially Balto and All Dogs Go To Heaven. Hell, I loved Xenofiction like crazy as a kid, and to be fair, the Watership Down movie was one of the most influential pieces of media on me at a young age, and the closest I got to hyperfixation. I'm anxious rather than depressed, straight, and working in a field related to animals _and_ the environment, so...close enough I guess?

I am pretty sure this movie is the main reason my life long favorite animal has been the wolf. Because I made sure my mom knew I needed Zelda: Twilight Princess since Link gets turned into a wolf, and had I already loved wolves for years prior. The sequel that follows his daughter Aleu was really good too, loved the song sung by her mouse guide.

off-topic but I need to say it Drawpinion, you should try watching an awesome girls doing cool stuff show (pretty please) LEGO Friends: Girls on a mission it has great characters, awesome voice acting, juicy animation, and great stories too! I'm sure you'll like it and it needs more attention, I'm afraid it is going to be cancelled, as the 4 season is only 8 episodes(twice less than the 1 season), and the animation team site makes it seem it's all that we're left with, it says 70 episodes (11 minutes each) were produced, and all of them are out this way or another I'm just a really worried fan of the show, this cartoon is what Moominvalley is for you ❤

My family once recorded this movie off of TV which we still have to do this day when it originally came out, and I loved it back then, and still do. While it wasn't the crown jewel of my childhood, the fact that it was based on a true story makes it all the more worth it to watch it at some point in your life. I now have a copy on DVD and still break it out every now and then.

I think my love for this movie comes from my own grandmother. My mother was the one to show me this movie but the story reminds me of my interactions with my own family. My grandmother would always tell me reworked stories of fishing and whales and adventures to the north. I live in a place where most of the population of my town is older people, 40-90, and so I have spoken with people much older than me. My grandmother was always there for me and always reminded me of this story. From her tales of fighting off giant seals to retrieve her fishing pole to simple stories of small creatures making their mark in the world. I will always remember my grandmother and grandfather for all that they helped me with and all that they did. I will always love them. Even now 4-5 years after they both passed, everyone in the town still feels their impact. Rest in peace Eliza Hynes and Leo Hynes, I will always love you. ❤ On a brighter note, this is one of my favourite movies from my childhood. It's characters have so much to share and Balto is such a cool character. I hope everyone involved with this movie is doing well to this day. This is an absolute masterpiece. Thank you Balto.

I remember repeatedly watching this movie and its sequel on TV as a child. I'm from Germany and there is a channel called SuperRTL, which, for the most time, would just rotate the same movies over the span of like idk maybe a year? Anyway, the scene that stuck with me the most was the one in which a child sized coffin was made. It just gave me chills and, for the longest time, was just a memory that I had stored somewhere in the back of my mind. A few years ago I randomly pieced parts of my memory together, found out what the movie was called and rewatched it and oh god, it was a great experience going back to it Weird I didnt become a furry later on haha

Balto was my huge thing in the early 00s in primary school, I read all the fanfics and I remember always going to a fan website I can't recall the name of. I also remember sitting with my Pop watching Balto with me in 2003 (he passed in 2017 of cancer) and I remember being impressed at the scene when Balto was sitting on the boat watching the sled dogs set off that he accurately predicted the ending to a T lol.
