Which is best? Ferry or Chunnel to get to France with a motorhome and a dog? (Episode 1)

In this vlog we explore whether we are better getting to France in our motorhome via our usual Eurotunnel route...or should we take the ferry? With the dog to consider too, we review the pros and cons...and the cost of both options to help us make our decision.

We travel to France several times a year to see our son and his family who live near Lille. Tunnel every time - quick and smooth! Not a great traveller at the best of times. Now we are aged we have treated ourselves to Flexiplus for the first time! Excited!!!!

Congratulations grandma and grandude. Great news. we're going on our first trip to France in July, very excited. We have chosen to go ferry, only because we live 30 mins along the coast from Newhaven , so no brainer really, but I do like the sound of 30mins travel time. maybe next time.

Congratulations on the expected grandchild! We usually take the tunnel with our dog too. It’s considerably cheaper if you book a long time ahead but we often like to be a bit more spontaneous. Have a great trip.

Congrats on grandparent hood , Jane and Andrew ! Coincidentally, we are also going to be grandparents in mid September for the first time. We are also trying to fit in lots of travels before the event. Sadly , our dog is 18 and seems to be deteriorating in his health. We flew to warmer climes without him recently and now are booking lots of trips in Uk with him . Looking forward to your blogs from EU , we hope to do the same trip in the van next year . X claire

Great video, we use the Chunnel as we have 4, yes 4 dogs to take to france, so no brainer as they stop in the van on the crossing. 😊

My other half is so tight he’s even made a spreadsheet of all the crossings to France and Spain versus the mileage and fuel costs, and he’s not even from Yorkshire 😂 We’re about to do our first crossing with our dogs to Calais in June and still finding out all we need to know, so thanks for this helpful info 😊 Congratulations to you soon to be grandparents! Yes, we would be in France already, but our youngest is doing his A levels so I thought I should probably be at home to make sure he turns up on time etc 😂 So it’s the 21st for us 🎉 I forgot to say, I’m so glad Andrew didn’t jump/get pushed off the cliff…was worried after 8 days 😂😂 Have fun buying those baby gifts 🥰

We're also off to France again in June......and coincidentally were going on Tuesday 4th. This time we're going with our good friends who have a motorhome similar to ours. It will be their first trip across the channel with their motorhome. We're going to meander our way down to Lake Annecy. We always use the tunnel as we just find it so easy....and as we favour eastern France the tunnel puts us in the right place and in a fraction of the time a ferry would take. The flexibility of the train schedules on the tunnel is a real bonus. We arrived at Folkestone quite early last year and they put us in a train and hour earlier than our scheduled crossing. If we decide to head to the western coast of France in the future we might......and only might.....consider a ferry. Great video, with enjoyable, down-to-earth content.

We love the tunnel too and would choose the tunnel again from Dover, however we have just done the Hull to Rotterdam ferry (we're Norway bound). It surprised us how relaxing it was and how well our dog settled in the pet cabin. We did a quick 'back of the fag packet' comparison with the tunnel and considered the cost to be similar but it's a whole lot less driving and we just hate that journey to Folkestone. Congrats on the new baby

😂😂 We prefer the Chunnel too. Its the short crossing and having the dog with you that makes our mind up and the ease of it all. We did try the Portsmouth Caen route last year while my daughter looked after the dog and we enjoyed the crossing and it got us to the part of France we wanted to be in but hanging about waiting to get on and the customs seemed very long winded in comparison. It was also more expensive. So when we go with the dog its definitely the Chunnel every time.

@@Eurosully We live in the north of England so we travelled to Dover the evening before and stayed in a safe park carpark in the centre of Dover(behind the police station with free overnight) We got the early morning ferry to France arriving there recovered from the M25 ! At check in for the ferry they just pass you the scanner into the vehicle so that's easier then going onto the euro tunnel pet passport area. The pet lounge is excellent so a relax and a couple of coffees in there and arrive in France ready to go.

Congratulations on the soon to be new arrival, we are due a grandchild in November, so a couple more grand dudes, we've used the train many times but never with a dog, but last October 23 we got a puppy and took it to Belgium in feb 24 to get a eu passport at six months old using the p@o pet lounge, and for us thats the way to go, we only paid £12 extra for two adults and one dog each way, we've also only paid £12 for a crossing the last week in July, we did phone p@o and didn't do it online so maybe thats why, first time going over they parked us at a lift I'd never noticed before that took us straight up to the pet lounge but not on the return, on the return its was the normal stairs etc, yes its an hour longer by boat but we're in a motorhome not a sports car so I'll take that, on saying that the train if fantastic, you pay your money and take your choice, another enjoyable vlog keep them coming 👍.

I am pleased that you chose not to get the P&O ferry. As well as financial reasons, ethical ones are also important. Let us not forget that P&O sacked 800 of their staff without any notice. I would hate to think what the quality of the replacement staff are like when it comes to training, or in an emergency situation 😢.
