I’d say somewhere around the middle with the right balance. Get a sig LC for your favourite units that you know you'll be using for a long time, and Eidolons on their reruns if you're still using them and would like a kit upgrade down the road. Roster depth will just be depending on either getting the units you're interested in, or the ones who can enhance your current favourite ones (support).

As a day 1 HSR player, starting from 2.0 I really felt that I no longer NEED to get new characters to clear content, since Im fine in MoC and PF. Finally I can relax and just go with the flow of luck with 50/50 or serious saving for characters that I really like, for example Robin and Sunday, just purely out of pretty design! Also I clearly know, which characters going to stay with me and I can/should improve, for example LC for Ruan Mei and Jingliu. I no longer worry about my 50/50 loses on any characters, since all of them just cherry on the top.

Eidolons on support and harmony that buff the team are definitely the move. That way if or when you do replace dps they still get the same damage buff from your support.

Lightcone for supports can be classified as a “doesn’t matter, there are plenty of good 4-star options” or they can be “this signature LC can optimize/change the way this character is played”. But i find it surprising that it was RuanMei’s LC that you decided on getting. Yes it is good, but Memories of the Past is so good on her, that no other 4star LC matches another support the way that it does to her. Idk, maybe you just wanna minmax RuanMei? I love her but I didn’t pull her LC for that reason.

From what I see so far, until 2.0, I prefer deep on support or enabler. With the introduction of Sparkle, it helps even “okay” DPS to have insane damage output (Serval to name one). Elemental coverage is important for DPS in HSR not like Genshin, so rather than pulling JY, Kafka, and Archeon that cover the same element, I think it is better to put it on support instead. With a good setup, a starter like Serval and Qingque covers your lightning and qauntum floor for MoC, in the end you only run 1 DPS mostly per floor based on the mobs on that floor, as long the support / enabler is there, you should be able to finish the MoC with correct element DPS. Of course, the idea of “just pull your favorite characters” still applied in some situation, just pull someone you are fond of!

I would say that I not 100% true cuz sometimes you want your dps or support to shine brighter so you would invest in them however new character push for more experience. I was luck and had jingliu blade kafka Dan Heng IL dr ratio. I have enough dps characters for now, same goes for harmony. What I luck are sustainers so my focuse will be on them and I will see if I go for adventurine or wait for master deviner rerun or who knows get both.

What makes fun is you win all the game modes thrown at you with your favorite character…im f2p but Im always saving up for lightcones and eidolons. Only dummies will get so many characters and end up benching them.

@@athancoreextreme With the end game content changes or new additions to the enemies you will have to face, older characters will have a harder time fighting the new enemies than the new 5* from the current version, I honestly think that having more characters on your account is overall a better investment than any Eidolons, but having some Light cones are definitely worth it down the road, all of this as a Low spender or a F2P, I also like to think that we F2P play a different game from these content creators/streamer because they have access to any team compositions possible for any scenario, that's just not a think for most of the players.

LC that worth pull are LCs that add something new to the character, example: LC that can change a character rotation. If the LC is just increase numbers on a character's kit then it is not must pull.

Should mention to get some "staple" characters that can work in every comp. Fu Xuan, Ruan Mei. Bronya from guarantee ofc. Thhis allows you to invest vertically for characters you want to pull for as they will always have a strong foundation ready for them

Space Prism in SU is how you really get to test how good a character's next Eidolons are without having to use pulls =) And it's also why it's one of the curios I always looks for - it makes getting it more satisfying when you do end up getting it. Usually my characters clear regular content well enough already

Everyone should know what they enjoy most, but I d also not recommend anyone to roll for multiple dupes of 1 character before they played for the character at least for a few monhts. If you got a character and you have been continuously enjoying them and basically findginy yourself constantly playing them - sure go for eidolons, but I think the most common mistake is to go for eidolons before you had the time to properly test the character out, as many time a character being "meta" or "hot" does not ensure that you will continue liking to play for them even after a few months. I personaly have E3 Dan, but went for E3 only on this rerun, coz he has been my favorite character and favorite playstyle for a while now. Next rerun I can go for E6, and my enjoyment of the game is within being able to use my faves regardless of the content or enemies - which eidolons enable. But for this to work, you first gotta find who is the character you wanna use even in scenarios when you shouldnt.

I think priorities change as your account develops. When you start, it's vitally important to build up a roster of dps characters for different weaknesses, as well as Harmony units to buff them, and a couple of good sustainers, one for each team in MoC. After that, pulling for more and more E0 dps characters is not going to help you beat hard bosses. You need to start getting lightcones or eidolons for the strongest characters in your roster. A good example is DHIL. At E0 without his lightcone, he's crippled by skill point costs, and performs badly. At E2, his ultimate lets him immediately do a 3SP attack for free, which then gives him even more energy for another ultimate. His Lightcone gives him more damage, as well as energy recharge, that lets him get ultimates even faster. Add Sparkle to the team, and he can spam 3SP attacks back to back, becoming easily the best dps in the game. Good candidates for Eidolon/Lightcone investment are: DHIL, Ruan Mei, Sparkle, Fu Xuan.

@@Yawar25 yep they definitely can clear but I don't use them. Getting Silvers LC and e2 not worth imo, e0 is more than enough with event LC. And Seele dropped off my radar after getting other units, so I regret getting her e2 instead of just e0.

Invested with real money for Raiden C2 in Genshin before. It does feels powerful but after a while it gets boring. I rather pull for new characters now than investing vertically.

The other benefit for funneling your wishes into vertical investment is it saves you the time and resources you would need to spend getting a new character combat ready! Which frees up the time and resources to farm for better artifacts for your existing units. Or just let you play the game less often/less intensively. Now that I have two 5 star sustains, two 5 star supports, as well as the standard 4 star units we all know are excellent and a range of DPS/sub DPS units I have no fomo. I can decide whether to get LC or eidelons, or see where my teams might be lacking. What I think would help my account presently, based on the units/team comps I enjoy is Topaz and Kafka. I have a few follow up teams that Topaz would fit well with and I adore Black Swan teams, so Kafka would only make them stronger. Played her in the current event and she was fun. I like her "boom" 😆 Played Jing Yuan since his launch and decided that his light cone was a wise investment. It is so universal, that if I ever stop playing him I can use the cone on any other Erudition unit and see the benefit. Lucked out and got two copies in one 10-pull! Keeping them separate and giving the other to Herta. Who surprised me with how good she is when invested into 💪🏻

If you are the kind of person that really choose characters delicately and don't want to spend so much time on multiple characters, then eidolons is a very obvious pick as you can beat hardest contents in the game even at low relic investment. But if you are the kind of person that easily gets bored of using same characters all the time and want to experience playing differently as often, then having more characters is better.

The established rule of Honkai Gakuen 2 and Honkai Impact 3rd, every new character is a power creep, just pull every new character if you want to stay on top, I see this as the same in Star Rail.

I'm auto battling MoC 12 with Black Swan, Kefka, Ruan Mei and Yaoyao one side and Sparkle, DHIL, Luocha, Tingyun on the other side. I'm not a whale so I've never pulled light cones, just getting these characters means I literally don't need to play the game.

Archetype investment is heavily favored by the devs. Make a strong DoT, follow up, basic attack, skill point spender and hypercarry team. This allows you to make full use of the MoC and PF buffs.

Having a few of those maybe, but the game is not that hard. Elemental coverage is one thing, but you really don't need to worry too much about having a strong team for every style of comp. It's simply not necessary unless you want to mindlessly stomp everything.

@@justinwickes4962 Stomping the content is when you hyper invest with eidolons and signature LCs. Because that allows you to ignore mechanics and buffs. Just press auto... I much prefer having a large roster and picking the best ones suited for the task. It is a huge part of the fun of the game.

@@virrre I literally only buy the monthly stellar jade thing and pull only for characters that I think look cool or play in an interesting way. The highest eidolon I have for a character is e2 bronya which happened by accident, being that she's standard banner. I am beating almost all content with ease, the game is not that complicated. I'm sure what you're doing works and I'm glad you're having fun, but let's not pretend that simple pattern matching is difficult or complex. If you really had one of every kind of team, then you would just have to match your teams to the moc/pf buffs. If that's how you like to play, that's great, but it's not necessary by any means.

It's pretty easy to make a tier list of value for pulling, honestly: 1) Characters: Open up entirely new team build options, voice lines, etc. Helps the game feel fresh and assist with MOC team combinations and conditions. 2) Light Cones: Add more effects than eidolons and in the case of 5 star signatures they are tailored to specific kits, while still giving you the option to put them on other characters if you need to down the line. More flexibility and more visible than eidolons. 3) Eidolons: Usually only change one or two aspects of a kit at a time compared to Signature LCs locked to a specific character, not visible without going into that specific menu.

In Genshin I was always about depth, making my 2 favorite teams as invested as I can and brute forcing all the content. I pulled an R5 Polar Star for Childe (id get his cons too but they kinda suck) and will be pulling for C6R5 Diluc on the upcoming special banner. On SR though I kinda went with a completely different approach. Go full breadth and avoid eidolons/lc banner entirely. This also made me appreciate things a lot more, where I have to worry WAY more about trailblazer power efficiency and sometimes having to use suboptimal sets on characters since I physically don't have the trailblazer power to farm for everyone's best sets. I've been loving the teambuilding for MoC/PF and creating the perfect team for every chamber. I know both ways are probably not optimal and you probably want something in between, but I guess I just like challenging myself.

i find topaz to be an edge case here, where her eidolons (E1) and lightcone allows her to become almost a hunt/nihility hybrid, with her applying 3 debuffs alone which is crucial for consistency in ratio teams (cannot wait for adventurine for numby spamming every turn)

I decided to skip Black Swan to save up for Sparkle's LC and it actually felt pretty worthwhile for my account. It's hard to save up enough jades since there's always the risk of losing the 50/50, but now that I have a lot of usable characters, I'm keeping an eye out on reruns to try and snag E1's and LC's for the characters I use. I'd say the only issue is that once you open the door to getting past E0 the temptation will always be there. Even now, I'm trying to start saving up for 2.1, and in the back of my mind I keep thinking "You have a whole month until 2.1, just drop another ten roll, maybe you'll get E1 Sparkle on this one."

in genshin i made the mistake of going for any character i anywhat liked. which resulted in a lot of perma benched chars and wasted money. star rail im hyper focusing on few characters i really like to make them last long term bc idc ab meta. to each their own but this is what has been working for me ! e2 kafka e2 black swan and e1 huohuo :) gonna go for acheron and maybe an eidolon but after that im chilling for the foreseeable future

Genshin is different from the Honkai series, Honkai is pure power creep, every single 5* character is a power creep. Genshin doesn't do power creep, it has more or less maintained the same power level since 1.0 which is why 1.0 characters like Bennett, Xingqiu and Xiangling are still top tier meta, it is actually the cheapest of the Hoyoverse games to stay on meta.

It depends on the person too. I'm a meta/min maxer, so i really want to invest into characters that way i dont have to switch them out for the next "shiny' dps unit. I have both E2S1 on Kafka and Black Swan, and I just picked up E1S1 Sparkle. Hyper investing into units like these, drastically increases the longevity of them, allowing you to comfortably skip banners, rather than feeling like you need to pull another stronger dps or whatever because youre E0S0 just doesnt feel as strong as you want them to. It's a fact that pretty much no DOT character will EVER powercreep my 2, e2s1's. Even if they do, the question becomes, do i need them? Definitely not. So 1 full side of both MOC and pure fiction is already completely covered, even if im fighting non wind/lighting weak monsters they just do so much damage that it doesnt matter, and i brute force my way quite comfortably.

I think DHIL has been the only broken E2, it's dps difference from E0 is absolutely massive and with sparkle now absolutely huge, even at E0 still jumps to S+

For me I prefer e6 support character mainly harmony instead of DPS eidolon because support can fit in many team and make your e0s1 dps deal pseudo e6 dmg and save a lot of jade even for f2p. This can be seen in many showcase that with e6 harmony any character can be OP. Just my 2cent thoughts.

As F2P, the only thing I want is GOD Tier relic . I'm okay with e0 characters, relic farming is more painful then lose 50/50 to Yanqing. You can spend a month and get NOTHING!

If I had money to whale on the low end, I would e1 two main dps, and supports, then look into their light cones last. As I am broke f2p, I see more value on getting more characters and build towards two solid teams. I'm new to the game so for ex. I tried getting both Dan Heng IL and Black Swan, to build them with Sparkle and Acheron, if I can hopefully pull them. Then I'm halfway there with both teams, and would focus on Fu Xuan and Huo Huo(unless someone better releases instead of her) if I could choose.

Both, having like 30 limited characters all built would mean you cant use most of them nayways. I would suggest just getting a dps for every element, some good supports and then start going for light cones and eidelons

I agree that eidolons and LCs are worth pulling for vertical investment, but personally I would rather have more characters. It's more fun for me. If I can full clear MoC and PF, I'm good. I don't need to 0 cycle. I'm a monthly player, skip all doods, and have every female 5 star (except Bailu) with +190 pulls. Set for future banners.

The only eidolon that I actually got was Ruan mei’s e1. I also have e1 jing yuan (on accident) but I usually only go for eidolons on supports that will last a long time and need to be very picky since I’m a low spender.

i have 3 plan to roll in my mind the first is to roll for every dps of each element and then go for support that buff differnt kind of stats and play style then lastly pull whoever i want or pull for eidolons for the character that i want to be stronger

IMO as a semi F2P im around 15$ total spent until i have almost all elements of breaking covered as dps characters (im waiting for a fire one thats not TOPAZ sorry topaz enjoyers) i think pulling a wider variety adds more to account power, but then again i have 1 element left thats why i am currently planning to pull a dupe in the near future around 2.3 to whomever that may be i dunno yet

So far, I would say support Eidelons are better. Then you can use ANY DPS. My Fu Xuan is used when I am still building a character and they are very low levels or have no good gear.

fu xuan lc allow you for SU pick greedier the seals with pay x life and get a blessing for example or the heal is sometimes handy before waves to gain a lot of lp.

Been playing the DoT mommy team comp and having fun with them. If you really dig the playstyle, I say go for it. Kafka is integral though because of her DoT detonation mechanic. If they ever release another DoT detonator down the line, then go for that character if you want. Ruan Mei also makes the comp run a lot more smoothly.

I’m f2p but I did go and wish for some of my most commonly used dps’s signature light cone. It really helps especially with establishing a respectable crit ratio. Getting that juicy 80/160+ crit ratio is usually really hard to do when trying to get away with non-signature light cones.

Balance is the way. I am F2P and saved everything up for e6 SW, but now struggling on some MOC or even pure fiction cause of lack of dps and supports. but it also depends on which unit you're investing to too.

Without watching the video, imma say after going character wide, I would suggest getting eidolons for your favourites because even MOC 10 was harder for a casual like me

I do play 4* and E0S0 5* and i can clear moc 12 and all pure fiction consistently since quite a few month ago, i dont think your suggestion makes any sense based on the reason you say it

People get mad when I tell them that the way the game is balanced around the gacha system is just objectively worse in HSR compared to Genshin (by which I mean more baity and less F2P/low spender-friendly), and yet the fact that we're even having this discussion (where in Genshin the answer would immediately be "no, you absolutely never need vertical investment to clear any and all content in the game, just pull for characters you like and I guess consider grabbing the archons") pretty much proves my point lol

Yea the established rule of Honkai Gakuen 2 and Honkai Impact 3rd, every new character is a power creep, just pull every new character if you want to stay on top, I see this as the same in Star Rail. Genshin is different from the Honkai series, Honkai is pure power creep, every single 5* character is a power creep. Genshin doesn't do power creep, it has more or less maintained the same power level since 1.0 which is why 1.0 characters like Bennett, Xingqiu and Xiangling are still top tier meta, it is actually the cheapest of the Hoyoverse games to stay on meta.

@@GuyWithAnAmazingHat Yeah and the weird thing is that Genshin (for all its faults, it's obv not a perfect game) has proven that you can have one of the most successful and profitable games in the history of the medium (and definitely by far the most successful gacha game) with minimal levels of power creep (there's literally videos of people full clearing the current abyss with only 1.0 characters/weapons/artifacts) ... only for them to completely ignore that lesson for their very next game lol

The gameplay prefers horizontal over vertical investment so definitely more characters for sure. Being able to play more different characters is also arguably a huge part of the game's selling point which is why Mihoyo never had a business strategy to release more eidolons and go beyond E6 into E7, E8, etc.
