Another Gem of crisp insight for general confusion among research scholars by Prof Ganguly, I miss this kind of guidance during my PhD. Sir please also have some direction for professional exp 12-15 years in interdisciplinary fields in industry both in India/abroad b4 completing their PhD research like me. It's very difficult to go back to consultancy again and teaching opportunities are scarce/difficult due to age limitations and other GPA filters even if the publication record is excellent. In my case, I have double master's and worked in India and internationally with top engineering consultants b4 deciding to do the PhD which I completed in years 18-21 with 8 journal papers 11 conference papers so far and 2 years of teaching experience as a contract faculty in an Indian university. Any direction whatsoever will be highly benevolent, Many thanks in advance Prof Ganguly, and I will definitely circulate your yt series among scholars with whom I directly or indirectly interact. 👍

Dear Prof. Ganguli, Thanks for sharing this important information. I request you to please share your views and advice students by making a video on the topic "Age limits for Faculty Positions". Since, usually in IIT's recruitment at assistant professor level age limit for general category students is preferably 35. If someone finish his/her PhD at the age of 33, what is your suggestion, they should try for postdoc or not. Since, getting a postdoc also takes 6-7 months. What should be the typical strategy in this case. Requesting you to please guide students on this aspect.

Yes if you are 33 then try to get faculty job as soon as possible. The other option is to do postdoc and then try for associate professor but that can be difficult to get. I will address some of these issues in a video

Dear Prof. Ganguli, so what about someone who obtained Ph.D. at the age of 33 and he/she belongs to SC-ST? Can they go for postdoc as they will get age relaxation in professor job in India?

@@Praseeda_Mol yes sure they can do postdoc but need to have multiple plans in case any one does not work out. Should not put all eggs in one basket

My son is PhD in theoretical physics from Tifr and abt to finish post doc (age30) . It’s difficult to get faculty position ,he is planning for 2nd Post doc. When he will finish ,he will be 33. Do u think it’s high risk ? Plz guide for another option to get job at this stage..or option for post doc to add value of present academic achievement

He can consider an industry postdoc. What is an industry postdoc? (as a PhD) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJzOeJKmrLB-kMk Or a second foundation postdoc like Humboldt, JSPS etc. Jobs are possible in faculty positions if one applies globally and is also amenable to teaching jobs. Thanks for this information. Could you please clarify my doubt? Right now I'm in the verge of submitting thesis from NIPER-KOLKATA. I got post doc position in himalaya wellness company for 1 year and it is about 3 months I joined here. Actually here there is not much research and scope of good publications. So if I get some assistant professor job in private college shall I quit this and join or else 1 year post doc I should continue. Is it ok if I do post doc for 6 months here and join as assistant professor? Could you please suggest sir?

You can complete the postdoc and join. But if you already have a job then you need to decide. Industry post docs sometimes lead to jobs in the same or similar companies too.

Yes phd in physics is a must. Try to see where the top papers in your field are, where the authors of the books you study are and plan for that. CERN and Princeton are good. But there are many more places too.
