Which is better? The Original or the Cover?

Today I ask for covers that exceed the original. I am on the search for covers that take the original material and improve it in one way or another. Here is the result of that.

It's genuinely hard to compare Dolly and Whitney, because Dolly is singing a soft ballad and Whitney is making a pure emotional power song for a soundtrack. They are both amazing and it is so hard for me to say one or the other is better. Dolly is so underrated.

I prefer the Dolly Parton version of I Will Always Love You. Mostly because of the more cheesy instrumental on the Whitney Houston version and that I heard it so much growing up it just feels like part of the wallpaper. I discovered the Dolly Parton version more recently and I love everything about it.

As Whitney's one of the vocal trinity, obviously, her voice is unquestionable. But that instrumental definitely dates it, it's the same thing with all those classic 80's ballads, or any cinematic ballad really, and sure Dolly's is the original so it's technically older, but there's a difference between "older" and "dated"- songs can sound old because they belong to a certain genre or you can tell from production... but that doesn't mean they're always made cheesy by it or borderline unlistenable. Lonesome Town by Ricky Nelson is another example of this, the language would be a bit different today, but it's written timelessly and would still fit on any acoustic or blues playlist with songs written way after the 50's!

i agree, but i feel like i have to give it to whitney technically because it’s one of the most impressive vocal performances of all time, and the way it builds is very good. i feel like i have to give it its due as the objectively better version, but i personally prefer the subdued sincerity of the original dolly version.

The Man Who Sold The World versions each have their own atmospheres about them and they're amazing Bowie's is off the wall, almost psychotic in its sound, then Ure's adds a dark, sinister twist Then Nirvana comes in and continues that dark feel with a more defeated tone, like he might actually regret it compared to the other 2

The thing about Tainted Love is that Gloria said she never liked the song and was uncomfortable with the word “Tainted” (because she was a virgin lol)… there’s actually a lot of backstory with the song. Even the story of how how it first got the UK has history. it was a B side to a failed single and soft cell made it one of the biggest songs of the eighties- it had the longest chart run on the US singles charts for a long time. I think it’s fantastic. The way it transitions from Tainted Love to the cover of “Where Did Our Love Go” is simply magical. i like the original, but Soft Cells was next level. It was one of a kind. There’s a damn good reason it’s survived and everyone knows it more than forty years later.

Bob Dylan's All Along The Watch Tower, covered by Jimi Hendrix. One of the best covers of all time, this is what Dylan himself said about it: "It overwhelmed me, really. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. Ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Dude, I didn't really know the original until after I discovered a cover I bought at a record store by The Neighborhood (not that new age band, fuck that shit) from 1970 on Big Tree Records. After I discovered Joni Mitchell's version, I came to the conclusion that she can't sing her own song properly. The way they transform a moody song about a mighty soldier who helped another bretheren in arms and the twist at the end gets turned into a tale of legend and the tragic feeling is transformed into heroism and fate. I love every second of it and it's always in the playlist xD

Frank Ocean’s cover of Moon River by Aubrey Hepburn might be one of the most unique covers of all time. He took a soft, simple song and added so much emotion with his vocals and instrumental. It has so many layers that stack up throughout the song to provide one of his most cathartic outros. The original is good in its own way but Frank’s is just so special in my opinion.

Late but I want to nominate the art vs science version of enter sandman. Obviously enter sandman is absolutely iconic and as someone who doesn’t really listen to metal I don’t feel qualified to judge whether or not it’s a good song but the cover is like super funky and just a banger honestly.
