Brazil were favorites in 1950 but that doesn’t mean that Uruguay were absolute underdogs, Uruguay had just won the first World Cup and two pre-world cup Olympic tournaments, so that’s not an underdog to me. West Germany wasn’t an underdog either, they had some good players and had been on good form the past couple of years. They didn’t park the bus like Greece did and they kept winning subsequent trophies after 1954 which is not the case with Greece, Greece disappeared after that 2004 euro win

Qualifying for WC is more difficult than qualifying for Euros but when it comes to the actual tournaments it evens out. After group stages, Italy had to beat Austria, Belgium ,Spain and England to win last Euros. Argentina had to beat Australia, Netherlands, Kroatia and France to win last WC. The point they are making is that the group stages are harder in Euros than in the World Cup, as you have many times 3 of the top 10 teams in the same group, while the groups of death in World Cup would be classified as easy groups in Euros. i dont understand the logic for the euros being harder than the world cup? the most important games happen in the quarterfinals and on anyway. if Europe is so good, then all 8 spots should go to European nations in the world cup anyway right? So you would just have the euros quarterfinals taking place in the world cup. and if European nations aren't good enough, then you have the best of other regions taking spots in the final 8, which means that the nations in the final 8 at that point are at a higher level than the euros quarterfinals. it just doesn't make sense because it's not like the world cup only allows 4 European nations to participate or something and European nations ranked 5 to 16 are just better than every other nation in the world.

Shaka is right. You don't need to play the game of football the way the best teams play it. Modern football doesn't win all the trophies in the world. In fact Modern football - possession / high press / geggenpressing - has a quite awful record relatively speaking of winning in CUP COMPETITIONS. It only dominates in leagues where week in week out you play inferior opposition who can't spend like you do. Real Madrid who have won the last 100 UCL finals have done so defending deep and hitting on the counter. France did the same at the 2018 World Cup. Argentina did no, but they had a player called Messi playing for them. Defensive, counter attacking football is perfectly fine for most teams to play. The US have this false idea about becoming a world power of football, but the reality is that they have about 4 - 5 other sports that get all their best athletes first. It will never happen. 1. Compare the rank of "worst" national team in world cup and of euros. 2. In euro you dont have a easy run, even in the group stage any team can beat you, because these is no bad ranked team . Whereas in world cup you have reserves spot for asian and african teams and we know how good is their rank. 3.
