Many years ago I owned a Les Paul Deluxe but I sold it to buy a car. Yes, I know, dumbest decision ever, but it was the only thing I owned that was worth anything and I wanted a car. A couple of years later an old guy nearby was selling his early 70s Gibson 335, I saw it but didn't think I could afford to give him a fair price. A couple of days after I saw it my girlfriend went back to him and bought it for my birthday present. I now own a few guitars but that's the one that I will never sell, and we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary last year. So for purely emotional reasons, that's my favourite kind of semi-hollow guitar.

My first electric was a 1965 Epiphone Casino (Gibson ES330 counterpart). Yes, since it’s a hollow body you must learn to tame its tendencies towards feeding back, but without the center block of the 335 it rings out and is therefore usable acousticly without an amp. No plugging in to practice. Also nice in that sense for songwriting. Oh, and it’s way lighter than a 335.

I have a 330 and and 335. They are completely different animals and I love them both. I was lucky to hit on a new 330L 10 years ago or so when they briefly were selling those. Having the neck join in the same spot as my 335 was the key for me taking the plunge, love it.
@Glicksman1 Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct The 330 (Casino) and the 335, while they look similar, are entirely different guitars. The Casino is, of course, fully hollow while 335 is really a solid-body guitar. I don't think that the 335's hollow wings do much of anything at all except perhaps cause feedback under certain conditions.. My Casino is the older version with the neck joining the body at the16h fret. While this does mean that extreme upper frets are not readily available, the neck being so firmly a part of the body gives this guitar an overall acoustical resonance that the longer-neck joint version may not possess. I recently re-strung it to Nashville Tuning for recording and it really does chime and sing like the top half of a 12 string. A lot of great music has been made on those old 330s and Casinos. Good luck and good music to you with yours.

I bought a PRS SE Hollowbody II charcoal burst on a whim and on sale. I love it. I thought I would want to change the pups but I'm keeping them for now at least. I may add a bass roll off knob Ala all Reverend guitars, but that's about it. I love the slightly bigger body and the layered wood (like a 335) as opposed to the core solid carved bodies. The only drawback is working on a Hollowbody 😫😓. But it doesn't look to bad.

I played an Epiphone Joe Pass model until the frets needed changing and the varnish wore off the neck. The thing I found about most vintage hollow bodies is that there usually is a buzz somewhere. They develop over time and eventually, I didn't do too well on the used market. That frilly thing on the trapeze usually is a problem and it can be heard through the pickups. Instead of solder welding them back on, consider taking it off.

I have a few T style thinlines in my collection. All of them have something that makes them different to one another. Baxter, you talked about rotational playing of the guitars on the stand. I have all my guitars in cases lined up and just go to the next one in line when I feel like playing. Knowing that a thinline or semi hollow is coming up next always puts a bigger smile on my face. There's just something special about them. The combination of weight relief and semi hollow resonance works for me. Jonathan, you also talked about your Gretsch and all your points were exactly what I experienced with my Gretsch G6118t Players Edition Anniversary. That one on the wall behind you (Jonathan) a little while back looked similar. I don't/can't play like Chet or Rockabilly but always enjoy the way my cover songs and jams come out. The controlled feedback that I can get from the High Sensitive Filtertron pickups and the resulting vibration of the guitar against my body is what you reminded me of when describing your Gretsch experience. I'm 63 years old and literally burst out laughing every time this happens. Still a kid at heart. 🤣😂🤣😂 Thanks, guys, for yet again reminding me of how much fun life is with a guitar. (or lots of different guitars 😁)
