Wow that’s a lot of information! I didn’t realise how complicated some filtration can get. I love how simple the ecosystem filtration is. The skimmer and biofalls make it so easy to look after and not much work to clean.

The drum filter is the most effective, given that it does not need to be cleaned.❤
@ThePondAdvisor7 ай бұрын
Really, I have found them to be expensive to run, you need to give them more attention, error codes are common, water changes are mandatory, it’s harder to create a decorative water feature with them, you need a filter room or house! For a compact koi pool yes a drum filter might be the best but for ponds with plants, fish and one that needs less attention or a degree if anything goes wrong. Don’t get me wrong they have there place and are the best for some koi pools. They are however just mechanical so you still need bio chambers. Just not the best for most ponds with koi or other garden ponds.

Reed plants cured my green water instantly, I find the all in one filters still quicker to clean than a box and pump. They need to be connected to a water fall the opposite end or the water is not cycled and then is pond weed city.
@ThePondAdvisor Жыл бұрын
I agree, reeds are amazing for tackling green water issues. And I share your preference for all-in-one filters; they do make maintenance much simpler for some people. Thanks for the tip about connecting them to a waterfall to maintain a balanced ecosystem. These all in one filters do have limitations however and need more attention than larger filters. I prefer adding a skimmer and biofalls for most garden ponds. As it’s much easier to clean out a basket or a net than dragging a pump out every couple of weeks.

Are you looking to build an aquascape ecosystem for Koi, if so look into wetland filtration, you can’t beat it, if you don’t want to have a pump/filter house that are becoming the norm with koi pools. These filters are the largest filters on the market as you build them to whatever size you like. If space is an issue look into a koi pool set up, these are compact but need a lot more attention from the pool/pond owner.

I have a bare liner, 6x11' pond that's 3'-5' deep(~2000 gallons). I use a DIY pressurized filter from a 58 gallon pickle barrel with matala, bioballs, and oyster shells to buffer the water. It is fed by an Aquaforce 2700 Turing about 2000 gph. I clean it every 6 weeks. For UV I have a fountain pump that turns 900 gph, my water is clear but my fish are growing. I'm going to expand to a second barrel this fall/winter and separate my mechanical and bio filtration. I currently have 6 layers of matala ranging from black to gray and ~1000 bioballs in mesh laundry bags. My plan is to add a little more matala and expand to 2000 bioballs. I also will make the water swirl below the matala in an effort to settle out big solids and help with maintenance frequency. Is there anything different that you would suggest regarding filter media?

I wonder if you can help me I am about to demo our old concrete pond and redo it all over again in concrete. This time I want it to be 6-7 feet long about six feet wide and 4 feet deep except at the shallow point at a 2 ft. depth so only 1 step. The shape will be an L shape. I am thinking it will be between 700-800 gallons max so only 3-4 fish max. I am not sure what GPH of a pump I might need. The intention is to have Koi and plants. I am now dizzy with options. I heard ideally you want the pump in the skimmer? I also saw that pumps last longer outside of the water. We are keeping the gravity system in place since it is built into the concreted in waterfall. The tube pops out of the soil and is generally run from there. I also heard we would need the UV light filter? Ahhh so confusing how this would all go together if we already have a built in gravity cascade? Thank you. :D
Mark I need help.. My pump was running fine in my skimmer but suddenly the skimmer empties faster than it can feel I honestly don't feel the water level is changed at all. Before I add freshwater I need to buy dechlorinator. There is nothing holding the weir door. When the pump is turned off the skimmer fills with water level with the pond, which is about halfway up the weird door. Do you have any videos on skimmer and pump troubleshooting this is really baffling me

Hi, so i have a lined pond approx 4000l With waterfall, Waterfall end is run with just a pump no filtration and planted its around 4 inches deep so basically the wildlife end water is beautifully clean. There are 2 large boulders between that end and the fish end so water flows all around pond but fish can't get to shallow end. Large end is 4ft deep then 3ft, 2ft shelves. Currently using a all pond solutions canister filter pfc8000 with a 9000l pump water is not good. Can see so many particles, also running a 3000l canister filter as extra. I have 3 koi, 2 turtles 2 weather loach, Swan mussels and around 20 goldfish 10 need rehoming as they have grown from eggs laid so they will be moved on. I've been looking at the Blagdon 25000l box filter that has 6 or 7 compartments as I feel the cannister all in 1 is just not filtering the water enough. No bottom drain on the pond. Planted well with Marsh marigold, watercress, iris and grasses. Wildlife area has frogs, newts, boatman. Any advice is welcome on filtration, I just can't seem to have good, clear water in the fish end. Thanks so much.

Could you please advise me which pump / filter I should get. I am building a small raised pond approx. 2m x 1 m x 0.5m depth and want to run a small waterfall 0.3m above into it. It wont have any fish just frogs. I am considering a pressurized filter fed from an in pond pump with a turning handle or pump handle for ease of cleaning. Is this overkill for such a small set up. Thank you for all your great videos and advice.

Really struggling with stringy algae , filter box has nothing in it but stringy algae have to clear my pump everyday etc. Water is pretty clear not perfect though. I've got a pressure filter . I've got a pond expert easy spin 30000 and thr pump is a 15000 ponds 14x14 by 5 ft deep in thr middle . But it's probably average 3 to 4 foot if you count thr shelves etc, do you think this should be enough? Got 16 fish most under a foot some.4 to 6 inch 2 big ones( had 20 year) its guarantees clear water but mines never been crystal clear since I've had it? Do you think this is enough? Yes I would say the pond and load is to big for the filter system. Or your having to clean it to often and the bacteria can’t cope. A waterfall filter after the pressure filter will work.

Boy did I hit the jackpot with this one! We are struggling to keep our about 3000gal biological koi pond clear. We just a few days ago built and set up a 100gal rubbermaid stock tank as a bog (its ugly) with a 1600gph pump. We also have a 1600 gal pump on the aquascape bio ball's waterfall box. We had a heavy fish load until I rehomed a good many due to not being able to keep up with the maintenance (cleaning filters and quilt batting every day). I am now trying to figure out the best solution to this problem. The new bog seems to be working a little even without plants right now (was told take all plants out in cold) is this true? Any advise would be helpful!

A quality drum filter + moving bed is your best pond filtration. You can feed as much as you want and your water is crystal clear. Maintenance is next to zero. Sure, you might have to set up an auto top-off system but that means you'll be doing less water change. I don't know why you're saying drums need much maintenance.

Hi Mark. I’ve just built a large v heavily planted pond which has a layer of clay covered in gravel across the whole thing (shelves and bottom). Instead of the box filter I’m currently using, I really want to filter the water using an up flow wetland system. Aquascapes use a snorkel centipede system which you can buy in the U.K. but it’s v expensive, Do you have a good alternative to this? Would a capped 300mm dia corrugated perforated drainage pipe with access chamber work as well? Also I was planning on making the wetland filter around 4000 litres ... just under half the volume of the pond... and obviously using the storm crates on top of the centipede/perforated pipe followed by the large then medium then smaller and smaller gravel .... all together, including the crates to about a meter deep. What do you think? I just don’t want to cock it up 🙈 Ps I have 5 small koi, I quite large koi and a fat goldfish who all like being fed but who are very well behaved with most of the plants in the pond Many thanks Ann🙂
