I never use an adjustable wrench anymore, there’s so few applications it’s actually useful for, and I always have my socket set and open end wrench set with me anyways. Adjustables strip bolts, they don’t fit in nearly as many spaces as a socket or regular wrench, they tend to gum up and become hard to adjust... I had the luxury of working in my grandfathers shop all through my teenage years and while I loved the idea of an adjustable wrench I quickly learned its one of the most useless tools there is, makes no sense when you have a nice socket or open end wrench set readily available.

Many moons ago I needed a new ratchet and bought a 1/2" from Wisent (kind of a house brand of german Bauhaus home shops). I don´t really know who actually made it, but they made it well! 1 meter pipe as a cheater bar? Using a hammer? Stand on the handle with quite some bouncing action in the knees (~85kgs)? There has been only one nut that didn´t budge (rusted center bolt on a driveshaft, that only gave up after one side was ground nearly down to the threats and heavy use of hammer and chisel), but this ratchet never failed. What makes this even more awesome - it has pretty fine teeth! I mostly use it to loosen wheel bolts, set it horizontally, stomp on it, loose they are. Guess they don´t make budget ratchets like that anymore...

@FarmerMiyagi check out AvE's channel. He also gets "better" results as his rig uses a hydraulic wrench with a transducer that has a suitable range for this type of testing. So regardless of what is thrown in the rig the transducer is spitting out a value that's directly proportional to the torque (moment) being applied to the test specimen at the working end. IIRC the big takeaway is that every wrench withstands much more torque than you can apply w/o any cheater bars & more torque than any bolt can withstand. So it basically comes down to ergonomics, design for small spaces, etc, etc. Not sure on wrench to bolt fitment though. You should check out the vids.

Close enough to Russia that he should look for some bolts from ROSCOSMOS, that are used for hold down on the launch pads. Those do go off with a bang, though as well frangible bolts are also a good bet for high speed footage, as you torque them up to destruction. Needs that oil exploration hydraulic ratchet head though from AVE, to get the torque to the right point, but the hydraulic pumps and setup to get the insane high pressure is already there in the press shop, and the flexible piping should also be enough to get to the outdoors to the blast cage.

the distance of nut and press is always the same
@Gabri-9915 жыл бұрын
That's right, but you must also consider that the press' cylinder has a certain diameter, and the first point of such cylinder touching the handle can be different (e.g on the left edge or on the right one) depending on the length of the handle, then changing the leverage dynamics during the pressure. Of course it's only a slight difference, but however it can create a distortion in the test, or something to take into account. Just my opinion :)

The wrench at 8:30 was on the nut backwards. That is why it stripped your hex nut, you were pulling it off the hex. If you flip it around, you would be pushing it onto the nut instead of pulling it off. Also, don't need a hydraulic press to brake a 3/8" ratchet, a 3' cheater bar will do it every time.

You can't really compare the force needed to destroy the wrenches because they are not the same length. You would need some kind of of force measuring device at the rotating end - like AvE

If my pressure meter would worked better I could measure the force on end of the lever and with my amazing math wizard skills I would been able to calculate torque that's been generated
@thomasmurphy83316 жыл бұрын
This has an equal amount of validity. The force that can be applid to the end of the wrench when it breaks is just as useful at finding out when it would break based on the bolt gripping end. If anyone was interested, they could convert between the two.

@@HydraulicPressChannel We don't need numbers, we just want to see shit survive or break. :-) The tools were stronger than I thought.
@Cess182sn6 жыл бұрын
@@HydraulicPressChannel But it's not an accurate measure of the force required to break the different tools. The force required to break a tool 100mm long would be multiple times more than if the same tool was 1 metre long. To know the strength of a given tool before it breaks you would need to measure the torque being applied at the nut. Or, have the hydraulic ram at the same distance from the nut for each tool.

Adjustable wrenches worst aspect is the people using them. Most haven't even heard the fact its supposed to be set up so that the adjustable jaw is under compression load leading the turn and the solid jaw is trailing the turn under tension(Just like you had it in this video). Also getting the tightest possible fit is important to avoid the "machining" the tool is infamous for.
@WoodworkerDon6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Not sure why some people think adjustable wrenches are supposed to go the other way. The way it was tested is the preferred proper way for the reason you described. 🔧

He shows you what each thing is he fixing to destroy can handle and he compares them all to see which is better. I have to admit that I was very shocked or plain out surprised to catch myself watching video after video and trying to guess how much pressure that it can take before he starts. This was a great idea, that's taken off!!!! He's got 2 and a half million subs. This to me is impressive and awesome. Just what I needed was another channel to watch. Lol.
