Unless your nails grow really really fast they still should last 3-4 weeks. All the nail techs I know do refills every 3-4 weeks depending on the growth. Never every two weeks.

They aren't discrediting your profession. They are warning about what could potentially happen when your carefree about where you get your nails done. I don't know about where you live, but within a 20 minute walk if my home there are probably 10-15 nail salons that would be considered cheap salons. Not all of the employees have gone to school to be a nail tech, they just learn as they go. Also, these salons do just the minimum when it comes to cleaning and sanitizing/sterilizing. Now within that same 20 minute walk there is only maybe 2 "higher end" nail salons where all employees have graduated from a nail tech program and they go above and beyond when it comes to cleanliness. I will only go to these places. I am a hairstylist, so I am educated about these things and what to look for when going to a Nail salon. Not everybody knows this stuff, so we need to rely on shows like this one to show people what could potentially happen to them if they are not careful about where they go.

Actually cellphones are not dangerous....there is a common myth that cellphones can cause cancer because of the "radiation" they admit but...they only admit microwaves and radio waves and those are perfectly safe for humans to be around. In every place ur in those waves roam they are only harmful when they are enclosed in a space,then they can heat up objects and cause some dammage. So all in all phones are perfectly safe to have near our faces and body😊 hope that gave u some new information😊

Here's a common sense statement. UV/LED lamps are about 36 watts. For less than couple minutes. The Sun is a million times stronger. The drive to your nail appointment with your hands on the steering wheel will received way more damage then a little old lamp.

I really wish these people would talk to an actual nailtec before shaming our profession, that way they might learn something. The nail does not need to breathe, i would think a doctor would know that. The nail we work on is dead, it doesn't need anything, The only way a nail can grow out permanently damaged is if you have damaged the matrix and a nailtec can't do that while working on your nails. If the nailtec is a good nailtec she will have the knowledge on how to NOT damage the nail while removing the gel. It's up to YOU who you go to to get your nails done, look around, is the salon clean? Are the instruments clean? ask to see other nails this nailtec has done. Don't blame the whole industry when it's all up to you who you go to. Just a tip, if you want good nails done, don't choose a cheap salon. Also, i don't know what this woman is on about and why since her nails are differently not all natural. How about talking about what to look for instead of telling people it's all bad? Shame on these people.

You took this completely wrong. They weren't shaming the industry, just trying to teach women how to protect themselves. 1, She did warn that you should go to a clean place. 2, I think we all know the nail doesn't need to breath, she didn't mean that literally. And 3, I know of an older woman who went to a nail salon faithfully every 2 weeks to get acrylic nails for several decades (literally). Her nail beds are now so brittle she can't stand for them to be touched. They are painful even to a gentle touch because (just like the Dr said in the video) they filed her nail beds down for so long that they are now week and brittle. This is a good thing for women to know to protect themselves.

1. No most people buy into the "your nails need to breath" crap and the "let your nails rest" like i said, nails are dead. they were living cells in your body, now they are a dead nail. 2. Nails get weaker with age, nothing weird there, there is NO WAY that doing her nails years ago has affected her nails now since the dead nail she had material on has grown out long long ago and the nails she now has are in no way affected by the treatment. If her nails are painful now it's because of something inside her body since the matrix that creates the nail is the thing that determinis how the nails will grow out. I think what she means by breathe is, give them a break from the nail polish, the acrylics, the gels. I know when I go months and months with wearing acrylics, and I take them off, my nails are so brittle underneath, they're flaky, and it takes MONTHS for them to go back to normal. Whereas, if I wear it for a month or two, then take them off, theres little to no damage.

If you go to a professional (not a chop shop) there is no need to give your nail treatments a break. People are misinformed. If you had flaky nails it's because the nail tech damaged them before application.

The reason why your nails are becomes brittle is because the nail tech is over filing your nail plate. Everytime they file your nails becomes thinner and thinner and when they take the nail enhancement off improperly, it takes chunks of the nail plate also. Thats why your nails are so jacked up and weak. Just make sure next time when you get your nails done, tell them you don't want to be buff or file on the nail plate. Enhancements like acrylic or gel is good for your nails because it protects it from water and makes them stronger but if improperly done it will fk up your nails real good. Also, you'll have to live with the lifting if they don't file the nail. The chemist that makes the nail products spend a great deal of time making sure the product is safe and good for the nails but a lot of nail techs mess up the nails.

Someone was either over-filing or not taking them off correctly. You should only file until there is no shine on your nail (very little filing needed), and you should never rip off gel or acrylics. Even if you're just ripping off softened pieces, if it's not easily giving, you're not removing it right.

As a nurse, I can see how having false nails can cause fungus to grow under the nail. But it will not grow due to false nails. The fungus and bacteria will thrive because of poor hygiene. I've had plenty of acrylic and gel nails put on over the years and i wait until my nail grows out before i put new nails on. Just the way I do things for myself. Not all nail techs are horrible. Just saying.

first off nails DO NOT have lungs so they can not breath. Goodness ppl. You get a fungus when acrylic lifts from the nail plate and water gets trapped in between. Ask a professional in this field before you run your mouths. LED is safer and faster anyways. I'm sure the "shop shops" you go to are filthy and do not sanitize instruments are the BIGGEST problem in my field. They only see you as a dollar sign nothing more. So with that being said don't bash our profession cause I've even gone to a doctor who used the f'in internet to diagnose ppl.. SERIOUSLY!!!

Queen Mummy misinformed. A pepper ball technician is supposed to ensure the health of the nail and upon properly inspecting the nail if it has indications of disease or a disorder wee are to recommend them to a podiatrist because it is illegal to work on nails of that matter. I am in nail school and there is a medical side to nails, it's not all just about glam. You want a healthy hand with healthy nails whether you come in for a basic manicure or for extensions. It's not all about the money but that's on you if you go to those cheap ass, unclean, bacteria filled, we don't turn people away with obvious abrasions of the skin on their toes, don't properly clean their instruments, nail tech doesn't wash hands before treating you typeof salons. Everything you see in a modern day salon is usually all wrong and nasty. They are not doing legal things per state board. Luckily my teacher does not pay and will and grass graduated many successfull clean nail techs who aren't looking for a quick check like these bacteria ridden salons you go to. If you want a quality nail technician be ready to spend some money. You get what you pay for. And many women pay for it when they go into the quick shop salons. (Meaning they end up with fungus)

In my humble opinion. Since I kicked fake nails almost 3 years ago, and once all the warn down damaged nail grew out, it took a few months for me to find the right long lasting nail polish and a non light clear gel topper that keeps my color from chipping. But once I figured out what brands work and the gel topper, I love the way my natural nails look, I feel more feminine painting and manicuring my own nails and actually it’s become a therapeutic self love time for myself with my favorite show or KZbin on. My nails not only grow super fast now but they’re soo much stronger now that I’ve stopped the fake nails. My nails are squared medium/long length and I feel even more confident showing off my real nails with all that money back in my pocket. Plus at least for me, with fake nails something always would happen even though they’re supposed to last so long, like besides the obvious gap after a few days from nail grownth, either the nails just start looking dull or worn down around the edges anyway causing you to go back to the shop for them to damage your nails and skin even more just to have the illusion of nails. I say, put in the extra bit of time, make it relaxing for yourself. You can make time, just make time! And let your real nails grow out and practice doing your own nails. You get much faster the more you do them. Get the wooden sticks to clean around the edges as you go! Also, I feel like it says something more for the girl who’s able to get her nails healthy enough, save her dollars, and does her own manicure that lasts ☝🏽. More so than paying for fake nails that ultimately damage your nails and keep you spending money unnecessarily. It kind of adds to the “Boss Lady” feel being more naturally glam and feminine all at the same time. But, not hating, just saying, my opinion. 💅🏽

Please do some research on the chemicals used during this process. Toluene - is a colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent odor. Exposure to toluene can cause eye and nose irritation, tiredness, confusion, euphoria, dizziness, headache, dilated pupils, tears, anxiety, muscle fatigue, insomnia, nerve damage, inflammation of the skin, and liver and kidney damage. Workers may be harmed from exposure to toluene. Formaldehyde - can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers Dibutyl Phthalate - causes hypertension, anemia and reduced hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell levels. Dibutyl phthalate triggers inhibited mitochondrial respiration, liver necrosis and peroxisome proliferation. Dibutyl phthalate raises the odds of reduced kidney weight and contact dermatitis Methacrylate compounds - this substance can cause serious eye damage. If inhaled, methyl methacrylate can cause respiratory irritation and labored breathing, and may progress into asthmatic symptoms. Additionally, it may induce narcotic effects such as drowsiness or dizziness. I am not telling you what to do, only offering information so you can make an *informed* choice about what products you wish to be exposed to. Also, consider the nail techs who work in these salons with improper ventilation, protection and often no healthcare. My neighbor (age 13) just lost her mom to lung cancer caused by years of damage to her lungs by working in/around this industry.

It makes me just shake my head in disbelief when I hear from clients that they hear “On The Doctors or Dr Oz...” that this is bad or that is bad for your nails. A lot of this video, in listening, is just common damn sense. I have been a licensed, practicing nail technician for 30 years this June. First of all, nails don’t breathe. Second, if you look at the nails on the video, those have been created by a profoundly long duration of time that fungus has ate away at the nail. Now in order to have this happen, more than likely, the customer had a darker color polish on so couldn’t see what was going on and went a very long time between fills or the nail tech played ignorant to signs of it when they were filling and just kept covering up the issue. And I will agree that this is from bacteria but, more times than not, it is actually the customers fault. This is just a scenario that I’m throwing out there...noticed some lifting on this nail or broke a nail but I don’t have time to come get it replaced so I’ll just throw some glue in it after I get finished doing the dishes and wait until I go in for my fill. Ummmm, in a week. So now, the nail has been glued, after getting dirty dish water in it. The bacteria sits there for about a week. Customer goes in for her fill and just mentions that her nail feels somewhat sore so she thinks she may have cracked it down into the meat. As the nail tech starts taking the dark polish off...😱 what do you think happened??? The nail bed is totally dark. Now let me ask, who’s fault is that?? The bacteria they are talking about was more than likely the customers own doing. BUT, I’m not saying that every nail tech or salon follows all the state board regulations. Why dont they put someone on there that knows what they’re talking about and maybe educate consumers on how to find out their states rules and regulations and what sanitizing solutions are legal in their state? Just basic questions to ask. Also let everyone know, that as a consumer, you have the right to ask to see what Sanitizer is being used and if you have a concern about a chemical, ask to see an MSDS sheet for it. YOU have the right to see these things. And for gods sake, common sense would tell you if you’re going to someone and they’re actually hurting you when they’re doing your nails, find someone else.

I personally love getting my nails done and I do all the time but think about it, when was the last time you've seen a doctor or nurses wear nail enhancers? Our fingers/nails are in constant contact with the world around us and are a perfect breeding ground all kinds of fungul and bacterial infections. Just because its not visible doesn't mean its not there. I am always doing things while I have my nails, cooking and touching raw meats, house cleaning, dirty laundry, toilet scrubbing, cleaning my dirty mop, washing dishes, taking out the trash, BBQing, touching our animals, changing diapers, counting money the list goes on. No matter how well and how much you clean your nails they will always be dirty.

Acrylics, gels , shellac all destroyed my nail . I wore fake nails for years. It took that long for my nails to grow healthy and strong as there were deep ridges in my nails. This is when the doctor is talking about something she knows very little about. Those nails were damaged due to drills being on high speeds. Most of the nail lamps now don't produce enough UV rays to damage your skin. And you should be getting your nails done every 2 weeks if its acrylic, gel, hard gels or a regular manicure. I could go on but yea.

Hi I am a nail tech and actually Acrylics because it covers your nail and holds them in that position and gel is not that bad but it peels and when it peels it takes a layer of your nails with it The dip powder is the most healthiest nail type it has vitamins in them and helps them grow out and when you soak them off it does not damage your nails

Our nails receive their oxygen from our bloodstream they don't breathe, however as a nail tech of 20yrs i've learned that its not a bad thing to give your nails a break here and there, acrylics can weaken the natural nail so a break can be refreshing xx

I also gave my nails a break for a few weeks and took them off and they looked fine. they were of course tender for a day but were fine after that. Exposure to toluene can cause eye and nose irritation, tiredness, confusion, euphoria, dizziness, headache, dilated pupils, tears, anxiety, muscle fatigue, insomnia, nerve damage, inflammation of the skin, and liver and kidney damage. Workers may be harmed from exposure to toluene. Formaldehyde - can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers Dibutyl Phthalate - causes hypertension, anemia and reduced hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell levels. Dibutyl phthalate triggers inhibited mitochondrial respiration, liver necrosis and peroxisome proliferation. Dibutyl phthalate raises the odds of reduced kidney weight and contact dermatitis Methacrylate compounds - this substance can cause serious eye damage. If inhaled, methyl methacrylate can cause respiratory irritation and labored breathing, and may progress into asthmatic symptoms. Ladies, I am not telling you what to do, only offering information so you can make a choice about what products you wish to be exposed to. Acrylic hurts to come off and makes your nails disgusting because of the glue. I’ve had it before. And on the other hand, gel, you can’t just take off. It’s just so liquid that you add on your nails like normal, but, it stays on long, prevents you from biting your nails, and makes them grow longer.

I have had acrylics on and off for 25 years. Always hand filed. Never had a problem until I had a new tech use a drill. I had a disgusting thickness under all 10 nails and separation of nails too !! Thought I had fungus at 1st, but nope trauma to my nail beds. It's been 9 mos and my nails are almost grown out and I can polish them. Yes, I saw a dermatologist. No drills ! My natural nail was not drilled. She used it to remove the gel Polish.

I always hated painting my nails and never risked the salons (Too time consuming for my life style, don’t have much free time). I discovered Essie Gel couture nail polish over a year ago and I paint my nails every 2-3 weeks and they’re healthy and long. They last for two weeks with no chipping if you cap the tip, they stay on after swimming (I swim three times a week). I’m an engineering student so I don’t have time to maintain my nails every week or so and don’t have time to remove real gel or acrylics. I can ignore my nails for a month and they’d be acceptable and shiny like a gel😍 wearing the shade PR stunt right now, 12 days and no chips 😌 in two days I’ll put the topcoat on again so it stays just as shiny and I’ll be good to go again. Spend the $15 CDN for the colour and get the top coat that goes with it, thank me later Editing to say I hate the original Essie line, my all time favourite nail polish that I will never switch from is the Essie gel couture. I don’t know where my life would be without this line. Other than this, OPI and Nicole by OPI last a week or a little over a week with a good topcoat. Not the MINIMUM 2 weeks I get with my gel coutures❤️❤️ I’d buy out the Essie gel couture rights and formula before I let them discontinue it

To everyone claiming that these doctors' opinions are invalid because nails don't "breathe": Just because cells undergo keratinzation does not mean gas and water cannot pass through these cells at a molecular level. Additionally, your skin (epidermis layer) is keratinzed (albeit not as much as your finger nails), and they still absorb water and gas at small levels. Your epidermi (nails, skin, hair, etc.) are produced to protect the nucleated cells underneath. When you can't do that effectively, for example when bodily sebum is insufficient, you might apply a cream to your skin to retain moisture. Just because cells are keratinzed also doesn't mean irritation/reactions cannot occur (lol we'd be indestructable); just think about inflammation from pimples, burns, or rashes. Most importantly, these karatinzed cells are present to protect, if you're stripping the epidermis of those protective cells, you are more likely to experience water loss (i.e. dry nails), infection, etc. Once you erode a significant portion of the nail bed, the nail matrix can only grow at a certain rate to produce more keratinzed cells, so you have prolonged lack of protection, brittle nails, etc. and yes you need TIME for the nail to recover its protective layer or "breathe" so to speak. Lastly, as a student specializing in toxicology and physiology, I think it's always a good idea to take Paracelsus' advice: the dose makes the poison a.k.a. everything is good in moderation, a tiny bit of sodium and chlorine is essential to life, but an excess of water can kill you.

As long as you go to someone with a great reputation, with good credentials, you will be safe. We take more safety precautions, especially when it comes to sterilization than your average hospital.

i used to get acrylic nails done every 2 weeks (refills) for about 3 years straight and now i no longer get acrylics. acrylics have permanently damaged the integrity of my nails. i have nails that will no longer grow straight along the free edge. they now partially curve around my finger tip. no matter how much i trim my nails they continue to grow a little bent. my nails are very fragile. they break super easily. and there is a single furrow going horizontally on my nail that grows out but usually comes back towards my cuticle bed looking almost like the growth of a newer, thinner nail. and i haven't gotten my nails done in 7 months so my nails have completely grown out from the acrylics but i continue to see the damaging effects post acrylics. even though they look nice and are inexpensive, i will probably never get acrylics again.

I’ve never heard of anyone going to the nail salon every week, have you? I’ve heard of them coming back every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks sometimes even 4 weeks but never every week. If you use gel extensions, they hardly ever File your actual nails. If you do acrylic extensions, you can get fills until you feel like it’s time to put a new set of nails. I do both and my nails always last 3 to 3 1/2 weeks.

There actually are a lot of people who believe that nails need oxygen to be healthy. I've been told so many times by people that I need to take time away from polish because my nails need the air to get at them. They weren't talking about nails breaking down from harsh chemicals or too much file usage. They literally meant the nails needed air. Even when I inform that nails are made of dead cells, they still believe they need oxygen. There are even some nail techs that say nails need oxygen and some polish companies that claim their products allow oxygen to reach the nail for optimum health. It's all baloney.

I think there is something to the nails being able to breathe when hospitals prefer patients to not have on nail polish so that the oxygen sensor they clip on any of the fingers can accurately monitor the O2 level in the blood through the finger and finger nail. Makes sense through observation and personal experience.

LED cures hotter than UV and is more suitable for Gel Polish Manicures. UV is the appropriate light for Traditional Hard Gel product... Speaking of that you want a product that is considered a low-heat to no-heat gel. If you don’t (and you put it in an LED) the heat spike can hurt the nail bed ... it’s just plain stupid to use that combination. But a High-quality nail tech knows what he or she is doing!

Ok first of I'm a nail technician and I have clients that have beautiful healthy nails long and strong some don't because you have to go to a grade A place no chop shops a professional like myself file the natural nail is a must to adhere the acrylic/gel but it's doesn't ruin your nail bed at all the only way that can happen is if you file your nail everyday and and once you get your gel are acrylic it last about tree are four weeks before filling and that's it acrylic and gel nails can make anyone have beautiful long nailz in two months if done right so before you go to a nail salon ask about what products they use and what to expect if they have no problem telling you then that's the place to go but if they cant tell you that's a big no no right there because some acrylic liquid has mma it's acrylic dentist use to fill in teeth and on the nail it kill the nail hurts and it's sticky when you soak it in acetone but real acrylic is flaky and comes of early
