In the UK we usually junk the beams engine for a 1jz. Have an Altezza on my channel with one. Regardless this will be a cool refreshing swap in a Celica can't wait to see the results thanks for the upload

Looks like 360p is the only quality available at the moment also, not sure if the others are slowly updated later, or if it's required to re-upload. Also, what a wonderful motor choice. The BEAMS is such a cool engine, I love the fact you kept it unique and original with a somewhat obscure motor. I've got a 1992 MR2 SW20 with the 3SGTE and it's a wonderful motor, Yamaha did a great job. However, I love that you now have a NA motor with over 100hp per liter, impressive stuff for the 90s. Following this build closely, keep up the good work guys.

I really like the choice of the motor, keeping the original spirit, I remember videos of Celicas rallying against mk2 Escort etc and those sounded so angry exiting a curve wide open juice. About the compression glad that all 4 cylinders are okay, a friend of mine changed an engine a few years back, the compressions were so low it sounded like a snapped timing belt with no compression at all. It took a few minutes to start the thing but then it was good and runing strong. Honestly I didn't expect an episode about the Celica this soon but it was a good surprise !

@beaujangles101

These engines should test 178psi in each cyldinder at 250rpm. I am a bit worried you are covering up the bad piston rings with oil so you are getting crap readings. Min pressure according to toyota is 142psi with no more than 14psi difference across all cylinders, so your readings of 200 are most likely blown up because of the oil you added. It would be good to do a test once you get it in the car, run for a little so the walls are cleaned up and then test again. Also how in the world do you have time to post so many videos haha
@speedacademydave
@speedacademydave 8 жыл бұрын
Yup, we will definitely do a dry compression test once the engine is in and running. Just didn't feel comfortable cranking it cold and dry given its been sitting for months.
@speedacademydave
@speedacademydave 8 жыл бұрын
Sucks to hear you had a bad experience there. Seems like for every JDM importer, I know someone with a bad experience connected to them. I guess I've been lucky over the years, as I've bought a bunch of JDM engines from 4 or 5 different importers and so far so good.

@Aurimukas17
@Aurimukas17 8 жыл бұрын
Well, I wouldn't tell, that this compression test was accurate because of oil you put in cylinders... I did same hoping my cylinder #1 was not bad, and yeah, I got huge number after filling cylinder with some oil, BUT I couldn't believe the difference with oil and no oil tests - so I removed head, took off piston and found a broken ring. So the piston with broken ring compression = 174 PSI Same piston with broken ring + some oil = 230 PSI Anyway, love your channel!
@speedacademydave
@speedacademydave 8 жыл бұрын
+Aurimas Kiseliovas I share your concern. I'm going to do a leak down test and retest compression with no oil in the cylinders and see what we get. I don't expect there to be a problem, but I want to be as thorough as possible before installing it.

funny i wanted a rust free old Japanese car from phoenix, so i flew out there with my girlfriend and bought a 1977 corolla station wagon and drove it back. After rust proofing it i am looking into what engine i could swap to make it a fun sleeper. Really don't want to destroy the body cutting it up to fit a huge motor and this looks like the 3sge might be a viable option.

@speedacademy
@speedacademy 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Loker haven't quite decided yet on the rear end. Might do a MA46 swap to get the bigger 7.5 rear end, or maybe a AE86 GTS complete rear axle w/ LSD, or even just refreshing the Celica rear end and converting it to AE86 rear discs is a decent option to get it rolling.

Have you decided on engine management yet? I'm Really wanting to try the AEM EMS-4 with a large drive by wire throttle body. I was just going to use the Toyota ECM, but I decided I want to be able to do more tuning, as I may eventually go turbo with it too. Not too mention, the Toyota ECM will be looking for the ABS/VSC system, and the 110mph speed limiter.
@speedacademy

Will most likely go with an AEM EMS2 tweaked by Panic Wire, though I'm also considering a Link standalone as well. Interesting idea to try an EMS-4 with a DBW TB. Are you using a Blacktop with dual VVTi?

There is a difference between a wet compression test and dry compression test. That engine seems to have low compression.
@speedacademydave
@speedacademydave 8 жыл бұрын
+Enrique Alvarez I know there's a difference. Typically if you see low compression and you add oil to that cylinder and you see compression come up by 40psi or more, you've got a ring problem. But in our case, because I didn't put the same amount of oil in the #3 cylinder as the others, the original test was off. Once I put the same amount in #3 as the other cylinders, the numbers were even across all 4 cylinders, so I think we're ok, but I am going to do a leak down test and a dry compression test in a few days to confirm.

+Patrice Murfene ya, TRD built a 280-hp version, too. Big cams, ported head, long tube racing header, ITBs, the whole nine yards. Maybe we'll do something similar.

He must of spent a pile of cash to do it because the Beams like all the other S-series engines have bad harmonic and oil pump issues

U do know oil helps seal bad rings right? When u get low compression numbers you put some oil down in the cly and if the numbers come up it means u have bad rings if it doesnt cone up it means u have bad valves or a cracked head. Not saying u have bad rings but u prob got a improper reading by putting oil in the clys. The 150psi is more then likely what u really have for compression numbers.

+Scott Merrihew is your wife hot? Haha. Sorry, had to. Pete's not married, obviously, and my wife is very supportive of all the car madness. She has a responsible adult job with benefits and all that good stuff, so I get to be 12-years old and play with cars for a living. It's a good deal.

Why you need a high revving engine for street use have you seen the traffic on highway 401 and QEW.

Hey guys, I'm having problems with my Civic Si transmission. It grinds whenever it goes into 4th and sometimes when going into reverse. Do you know of any reasonable shop that can fix this problem aroun Mississauga/Brampton and also install a new clutch and flywheel. I don't want to spend tooooo much, but I do know this is a costly job. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

if you were to have compression problems how would you go about fixing that?
@speedacademy

Well if its within the alotted time to bring the engine back then we'd return it. Otherwise, it would need a bottom end re-ring.
