Fun fact: Chinese isn't wordy; quite opposite it is compact. Chinese has 10k+ characters so that it needs not many words to express meaning: most single characters already can express detailed meanings. That's why Chinese sentences are shorter and simpler. You can find Hollow Knights speedrun in Chinese to spend the least time on cutscenes.

Chinese is wordy. I always know that the text wasn't written by a native when I can recognize most of the words in the text and the words I check are not yet another way to express something I supposedly know how to express. Chinese combines characters to create new words, but it is not like you just need to know the meaning of its components. No amount of thinking would lead me to guess 开 - 'open, start, turn on, drive' +心 - 'heart, mind, intention, centre, core' makes 开心 'to feel happy'.

@@oraorao8245 that hardly makes the point of Chinese not being 'wordy'. I know of at least 7 different ways you can say 'to feel happy' in Chinese. My point with 开心 is more about how it is a separate word no just a combination like English 'swimming pool', but more like English phrasal verbs where combining words make wildly different meanings like 'put up with'. Most people making a point of Chinese not having many words think about this 一字一词 principle from Classical Chinese, which is not exactly applicable to Modern Chinese. So they think that because Chinese has around 60k characters, it has only 60k words. So I wanted to make a point that there are 2 and 3 syllable words that aren't just a simple combination of characters made to specify one character (like 说话 is).
