Which Motor Oil to Choose

Both 5w40 and 10w40 are winter motor oils. So what’s the difference?
In general, the numbers at the front and end refer to the oil viscosity (or thickness) and operating temperature extremes.
The number ’40’ at the end indicates it’s thicker than the average motor, which is 30. This can lubricate an engine even when it’s hot, unlike other oils whose efficiency decreases with heat.
5W40 oil supports higher mileage engines and in locations that experience winters above freezing temperatures. 5W40 is much better than 10W40 in starting your engine at cold temperatures, down to 5 degrees Celsius. But both may be ineffective when used in freezing climates.

40 weight is 40 weight at operating temp. They'll both protect the engine thebsame at operating temps. 5w-40 will flow better at lower temps.. as the 5w means the viscosity acts like a 5wt at 0C (32⁰F), while still acting like a 40wt at 100C (212⁰F).

Weight has nothing to do with it. The W stands for winter and is a measurement for oil viscosity at cold temps

@@AH6man weight is common vernacular for viscosity in engine oil. W does indeed stand for winter; specifically the viscosity rated at the freezing temperature of water. The second viscosity rating is measured at the boiling point of water, or typically closer to engine operating temperature. That was the point of the original comment. Sorry for your confusion.

Not necessarily Just look at the spec of the oil and decide 5w40 are oftentimes more expensive because it is simply better (Lower viscosity at low temp means better protection during startup)​@@CarlosMartinez-pc7je

@@onehourmusicbc less polymers the better. It I live in Sadia Arabia Id run straight weight vs multi viscosity. Same base oil quality small the number gap more stable oil is.

@ most 0w40 shears in 2000 miles & the large amount polymers to reach such a large gap 0-40 causes deposits. 0w30 is the largest gap Id go. 5w40 is good in cold Europe in winter. 5w40 year round if I were you. Lake Speed Jr has a video on mobile 1 0w40. But he might approve a certain formula.

Incorrect. The W is the winter rating. 10w will flow better than 20w in winter. Both are 40, so they will behave the exact same at operating temperatures

In australia normal temperature when hot is around 30 degrees upwards to nearly 40s..so my oil viscosity can be a 30 or 40 if my kms are really high in the 100s and 200s..in winter it can reach just below 10 like 6 to 8 but normally around close to the 10 degrees...so my oil viscosity is 10W...so all up I can use a 10W30 or 10W40..the difference betwwen the 2..is the 40 is much thicker than 30..so if my kilometres are high like over 100ks up to 200ks and over..I recommend you use the 10W40...but 10W30 is perfect as well..when new up all the way to getting close to 100ks and the 200ks..cheers

🤔 I learned from experience and verified by the mechanic that If you use 10-40 in the 4.9 liter Ford motor in the 05 Crown Vic I promise it’s gonna chug and stutter. 5-30W only for that one. The tolerance is too tight it can’t handle it unless it’s clapped out and done. It’s necessary for some motors with tight tolerance to use exactly what it says in the manual or most of the time when it’s vital like that it’s written boldly on the fill cap. Don’t ignore it please for the best results use whatever is written. 😢 Also. NEVER EVER NEVER USE ANY FRAM FILTERS!! ABSOLUTELY NEVER FOR ANY REASON!! I Strongly recommend Wix. The most pleats and high strength and quality construction. Fram is PURE CRAP 💩. Hope this helps 😏❤️✋🏼🇺🇸

As a former car mechanic, I recommend: 0w40 for cold climates and normal use 5w40 for hot climates and normal use 10w40 for hot climates and heavy use Or use 10w60, 20w60 or 20w50. Whatever k bye

I like to switch a car I buy to 10W40 high mileage full synthetic even if a car oem recommends 5W30. I stay in Michigan where it’s gets cold but not negative degrees cold. Is that bad?

you should run 0w20, operating temperature of engine oil is around 100 degrees Celsius up to around 125, and anything over 140 degrees Celsius is considered high temperature that degrades the oil

My car manufacturer recommends them both 10w40 and 5w40 But for a diesel engine that is well maintained and in warm climate There’s no benefit in using 5w40 It all comes to the climate you live in

The 5W40 has a synthetic base, it is more resistant to heat and shear. In the long term, it will make a difference. Full synthetic 10W40 are available. But they are rare and expensive (10W40 Motul 300v or 10W40 Redline for example).

Your Explanation is Not Accurate!! The only difference of 5w40 and 10w40 is the Cold Start Viscosity.. 5w is thinner than 10w but Both of them have same Viscosity in Operating Temperature "SAE 40" 🌡️.
