I have a Nikon Z8, Z7II, and a Nikon Z30. I use the Z30 on a gimbal and can carry it all day if I need to. The video on the Z30 is amazing, and it's my go to for most of my video needs. I can't stress how good the video is on the Z30, and it being light is a super important feature to have. Not having a viewfinder is not an issue if you plan on using the camera mostly for video, and having a LCD display that pops out to the side while using it on a gimbal is incredibly important. The video on the Z8 is great, but it provides far more options that are mostly nit needed unless you are doing serious work with extensive color grading. In most cases I can't tell the difference between the Z8 and Z30, when recording in 4k 30p video; and not in terms of dynamic range, but in terms of clarity and picture quality.

I absolutely agree, the Z30 is a small little beast with wonderful capabilities! Unfortunately I have purchased it especially for wedding videography because my partner cannot hold anything heavier for a 15 hour wedding day. And then comes the first summer wedding season and the camera just overheats EVERY time. It just simply cannot maintain working temperatures while shooting 4K. We have tried 1080p, but I am having a hard time leaving 4K behind while promoting our video work as premium quality services... So even tho I adore the little z30 we are about to purchase another Z6II to our arsenal and guess my partner just have to train her biceps to keep up with the weight! :D

One thing that I learned from many years of digital photography is that sensor size is only one factor to consider when buying a new camera, l have cameras from Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm, Pentax and Nikon, they range from full frame to APSC and Micro 4/3. If you plan on getting serious about your photography i recommend starting with a mid grade camera and choose your lens carefully. If you are on a budget, look at the used market and buy from a camera store that grades the equipment, i have used B&H PHOTO and ADORAMA for my camera purchase. Many of the cameras that I have were purchased new but near the end of their production or after they had been on the market for a while. You don't need a full frame camera to start in paid photography or just using your camera from photographing events, the last wedding i attended i used a Fujifilm XT5 with a variety of Fujifilm and Viltrox lens and it worked great.

Nice overview of the Nikon lineup. Having owned the Z6ii and Z7ii and now owning the Z8 and Z9, the only thing that I would differ on is if I only owned one Nikon Z lens, it would be the Z 24-120 f4 S which is a great hiking, travel and capture the moment lens. I get your preferring the low light capability of the Z 24-70mm f2.8. but for indoor sports I've been able to count on the Z 70-200mm f2.8 and Z 105mm f2.8 Macro (I often shoot with two camera bodies sporting different focal lengths.). I prefer not to use the 24-120mm f4 for indoor sports as it often necessitates pushing the ISO higher than I'd prefer. For outdoors sports the 24-120mm f4 on the Z8 while the Z9 having the 70-200mm f2.8 attached works to cover most of the shots that I encounter. I get that the Z 24-70mm f2.8 S is a great lens, and I'll probably hope to find a slightly used one to add to arsenal one of these days, but for now I've used my spare cash to pre-order the Z180-600mm.

If you do a lot of street at night you are going to love it. Street at night is slow the AF will be more than enough, and steer often call for single point composition. The other point is adapted lenses , the Z8 and the z9 will focus with your old Ninkkors often equal or better than the D850, yes they are that good. The other cameras in the list are not even close. The Z8 is a much better choice than the Z7 but it is not only for the AF but for the EVF. The Z7 does not provide a realtime view of the subject once you start shooting, in H+ it will show you a slide show of what you just shot, this is very annoying and will likely make you lose the subject. For sports and wildlife currently only the Z8 and Z9 can be recommended. It is possible to do wildlife with the others as well but it gets a lot more difficult because of the slide show issue.

Coming from a D750 I wanted the higher resolution and feature set similar to the D750 so my choice was the Z7 II. What is a bit interesting is that when I purchased my D750 it was a 2300 dollar camera and with the Summer sale my Z7 II was the same price. Note, Nikon's "power saver" mode should actually disable the rear screen as a viewfinder. I only rarely used Live View on my D750 and find it's an Energy Pig on the Z7 II. Note in the Setup sub menu set the "Limit Monitor Mode Selection" so only Prioritize Viewfinder(1) is checked and you'll get a camera that basically operates like the D750. BTW, doing this will also make the I menu on the rear display a bit more useful because the top half of the rear screw will display what is seen in the info panel (exposure data) for the bottom of the EVF display. The rear screen will then only be used for the Menu and Review Images functions and this will extend your battery life a lot. The only downside is the rear screen touch features are disabled, so shifting the AF point will require using the joy stick.

I really wish they’d come out with a Z7III with the AF of the Z8, but leaving out some of the other fluff to make it a little easier on the wallet. Basically, get the price a bit under the R5. This way I can use an FTZ adapter with all my F-mounts while I slowly transition to Z-mount. If I spent the money for the Z8, I wouldn’t have to worry about buying Z-mounts because they’d take my house and reposes my car. I don’t want the Z7II because evidently the AF is abysmal, and it seems these hi-res cameras need to be able to record 8k in order to have good 4k. Neither of those is a good compromise for me, but I don’t want to have to swap out all my lenses at the same time as bending over for a camera, as I would have to do switching to Canon. It’s really a shame that you have to switch systems all the time as one manufacturer becomes uncompetitive and another keeps innovating. Maybe that is only a problem for us sad Nikon shooters.

The ONLY reason I switched was the autofocus system. Well-scripted and distilled so as to get to the point quickly. I like long-form videos, too, but this is easily digested.

Get a used Z6 for $850 that pretty much is new. It is almost identical to the Z6II in terms of performance. BTW Nikon should consider releasing a Z8 with around 30-36 megapixels and price it around $2999. The current price of $4000 is just a bit out of reach for many hobbyist.

I have a plan: when it gets to about 100MP on a full frame sensor small camera, I am going to buy one with the sharpest 28mm lens in existence, and for my purposes I can deal with f/2 or even f/2.8, so it can be small. I will shoot 100MP RAW, then get a kickass fast computer with about 10 Tb storage, and crop everything to how I want in post. BTW- I don't even shoot video.

Still love my old D610 DSLR and the cheap glass prices for even the 14-24 and 24-70. Need a video camera for real estate interiors. Even considering Canon R8 and RP. Too many choices.

I couldnt find the lenses i was looking for in z mount or e mount. I went for Canon. For me, it was about lenses more or less, all cameras are good and similar these days, except some characteristics which are subjective sometimes.

Almost bought a Z5 but the R8 is just wayy more advanced in so many ways, Canon AF is very noticeably better, 40 fps burst vs. 4½ fps...

I don't know what your shooting style is, but if you buy a cheap FF, I would instead invest in an expensive APS-C..
@999.9finegold Жыл бұрын
The R8 shoots 40 FPS with an electronic shutter. In any case where you will need so many frames per second, the images will turn out distorted. The sensor of the R8 is not as fast as the sensor of the R3. Therefore it will not suit you for sports photography. This is a dead feature Instead I would recommend the R7 which is a camera with fast and effective FPS using a mechanical shutter. In addition, it has ISIS that improves the sharpness of the images when you shoot at a low shutter speed.

The motion detection has been a long time coming? Also, camera mfgs will sell when they offer the ability to blend videos i.e. scene blending so you can make a production right in your camera, upload it and be done with it.

The chart shows "Video (full)" indicating full-width video. The Z6 II technically shoots 4k/60 but with a heavy crop, limiting the usefulness.

So, questions, at the introduction of the Z6 and Z7 there were major software issues and no one wanted to go with these cameras. Has this been fixed??? If the auto focus and eye focus for wildlife any good???? I would love a Z8 but it is just too far out there, even if I sold everything I got. I shoot a D7500 and have great lenses, just wish I had better auto focus on wildlife shots. Thank you, love Admorama and use them often. 100% solid! Moonpie

Personally I wouldn't be recommending the Z6 II to anyone doing more than landscape or portraits. The AF is slow and inaccurate enough I truly struggle to trust it, the eye AF is flaky if I'm being kind. Its a camera that really should have been replaced a while back. In my opinion Nikon currently dont have a good enough mid range full frame mirrorless camera. If I want to make sure I nail a shot in fast ish motion or in any sort of low light I switch back to the D500 it will do a far better job, I've just the A7 IV and the focus reliability is night and day compared to the Z6 II. In comparison video wise the Z6 II video has jittery AF and the flat profile is far from flat. Truly feel like a wasted my money and wouldn't recommend it to anyone even a year or more ago. (I've had the Z6 II lose focus and fail to reacquire on a landscape, on a tripod before now) though I'm not surprised theres a video from a Nikon engineer saying the Z6 II has 10% the processing power of the Z9 so its just effectively abandoned by Nikon now.
