I'd say Republic Venator's many weakspots could be defended by starfighters which could be easily deployed with the giant hangar.

Depends on how quickly they can be deployed. If a Venator jumps into the middle of a battle, it might get shredded.
@socipathicgaming59142 жыл бұрын
But that was not how it was used. Tactics is a strength or weakness of ships design as well. In this case the fighters could do nothing to defend the Venator's weak spots as the Jedi's tactics was to face palm the Separatist's fleets with this ship which was a job the more suited for the Victory class star destroyer.

The venator was so miss used. It was a carrier, not a frontline ship. It was designed to support from the back with its enormous fighter count and take out enemy fighters with its large array of point defence lasers. Thing is the Venators "weakspot" was almost NEVER exploited. The big ventral hanger never opened when it went into direct combat, instead before being within range of any Seperatist ships, it would release its fighters and then engage once the hangar was closed. I don't think we've ever seen any Venators fall due to this "weakness" and instead lose from overwhelming enemy firepower, superweapons, incompetent leaders, sabotage or Anakin breaking fhe Geneva convention

Aren’t they pushing twenty years old at that point and the Alliance are using starfighters primarily designed in the years after the end of the Clone Wars? The Y-Wing is the only ship of a similar age the Alliance used and they had them stripped to the bone and upgraded compared to the Republic’s Y-Wings. Edit: In the new cannon there’s been only one post-Clone Wars Acclamator, the _Lodestar_ under Hera Syndulla. The _Lodestar_ was destroyed over Troithe in the novel _Shadowfall_ trying to hold off an Imperial Star Destroyer. The _Edict_ and her flight of TIE fighters pinned down the _Lodestar_ and she broke up. Troithe’s planetary defences brought down the _Edict_ and she crashed into the planetary shield, destroying it.

The Venators were also able to operate by themselves deep within enemy territory, and do so many deep strikes in Confederacy’s territory that it prove vital for the continue fighting against a innumerable droid armies that the Republic was facing.

I agree and I think it's unfair to say they weren't used right. Because if the other ships were used right they would have been defending the Venators thereby forcing it's proper use. So when it isn't used right none of them are. It seems like a cheap way of knocking the Venator.
@youcanthandlemyname73932 жыл бұрын
well not exactly. palpatines influence won the war for the republic navy. i love the venator but it was used improperly by the republic navy. it should have been used as a dedicated carrier along side victory classes acting as the battle ships but instead the venator was used as both a carrier and battle ship. because of this the cis navy heavily outmatched the republics navy and the republic navy would have fallen if it was not for the inane industrial capacity of the core worlds pumping out ships faster than the cis could destroy them, remember the core worlds had correllia, kuat, rendilli, and mon calamari just to name a few on their side. their ship building power far surpassed that of the cis. and palpatines influence. again i dont think this is the venators fault as it is an excellently designed ship. rather its the republics fault for using the venator as a battle ship instead of using it as a dedicated carrier in conjunction with the victory classes. hell you could have scrapped the acclimator line all together had they done that since venators are more than capable enough of transporting and landing troops/vehicles on planets thanks to their large array of gunships and walkers they carry. not as good at it as an acclimator mind you but more than capable enough.

The Republic fleets had ships that were designed to fit a specific role in the fleet. Acclamators were unstoppable on their way to planetside to deploy thousands of troops and heavy walkers, and provide heavy turboloader fire support vs CIS Tanks. Venators with their fighters/bombers could knock out repurposed CIS Freighter Battleships before they are even in range of their guns.

The issue is Thrawn is the only one in star wars smart enough to use a mixed fleet with multiroll ships. I mean seriously the Jedi treat the Venator like an attack ship and they don't even do it smart and go broad side but instead gun the engines and go face forward limiting the amount of guns that can fire. As for the imperials well one of thrawns idiot subordinates took an interdictor suport ship our of formation to use it like an ISD and charge the rebel fleet. And the rebels sure they use a mixed fleet but not because there smart but because all they have is random shit.
@thefirstprimariscatosicari68702 жыл бұрын
The issue is simple: they didn't have a diverse fleet. They did not have the dozens or hundreds of new, yet throughly tested, solid designs, a true Navy would need in war. They had patrol cruisers with more guns bolted on, ludicrously upscaled troop transports with more guns bolted on, and finally what were most definitely designed as faster Lucrehulks, mobile patrol bases to hunt down pirates. Ships take years to design, and the Republic had to take what little they had available, mass produce it, and hope it held the line long enough for proper warships to be designed. Without Palpatine manipulations, they wouldn't have lasted long enough either.

It's sort of a reflection of WWII and modern carrier groups; after the U.S. Pacific fleet was mostly wiped out and things turned to an island-hopping land war, all they had left were aircraft carriers and little to no combat support ships... But that, some really good strategy, and lucking out on a Zero crashing mostly intact in the Aleutians to finally give accurate info on what their fighters needed to be capable of, was enough to bring the fight all the way across the ocean. At least until some of the ships that were being constructed were finished and hauled ass to join up with them. At that point they barely even engaged in direct ship to ship combat anymore, battleships became more of artillery batteries for the island wars. The issue is that aircraft carriers back then could become essentially useless for potentially days with the right targeted strikes to the flight deck, just like how the Venator's giant dorsal hatch, one of its biggest advantages, was also its weakness. I think the best sort of carrier group the Republic could have would be like 3 Venators acting as dedicated carriers, 3-4 Acclamators modified with a mix of at least interceptor or escort fighter bays and troop space to be able to play the rolls of frigates or destroyers (in naval terms, not SDs) and still act as assault cruisers, a Victory to act like a battleship, handling artillery and missile bombardment, plus additional anti-starfighter support, and a couple Arquitens acting as skirmishy light cruisers/corvettes for ambushing pincer movements and transporting specialized units quickly and quietly. Perhaps with some escort fighters that could handle being out with them alone for a while, like some dedicated ARC-170's that hitch rides with other carriers when back in the main group.
@BravoHalcyon2 жыл бұрын
I think the Arquitens is insanely underrated. Yes on paper it was “undergunned”, but if you look into it that wasn’t true at all- it simply had an efficient gun layout. Looking at the design, the Arquitens had a very effective firing arc for a Star Wars ship at all angles (besides behind) and all the guns were on turrets, unlike those of the nebulon b you compared it to. That means it could bring all its guns to bear on a forward facing target instead of risking a broadside so you could fire merely ~40% of your guns at an enemy. There’s a reason this ship was used from the start of the clone wars to the end of the empire.
@thefirstprimariscatosicari68702 жыл бұрын
There's a reason RL ships went for less and less guns as time went on. The Arquitens was a screening and patrol vessel, it didn't need to fire at all times in all directions. It needed to outmanouvre larger foes, hunt down and focus on its weight class, provide high resolution sensor data etcetera.

I feel like I say this a lot but I'm gonna do it again. The Venator doesn't need heavy arms when it has an air force of fighters and bombers on board. The small craft act as it's weapons and shields when used right I know someone will say it wasn't used properly and that's true, but also applies to the rest of the ships. If they were used properly then the Venator would have been used properly as well because they would have been protecting it from enemy ships. So the Venator still wins for me. Basically a Venator can win a battle alone with it's fighters but a Victory or Acculamtor can't beat the Venator. As the almost 200 fighters it deploys will wreck them. And while not as tough, the Venator is tough enough to last through the fight and help break the enemy with it's few cannons.

What I've noticed is that republic ships usually specialize in a role of which they excel at but are made flexible enough that they can take on secondary roles if need be, albeit with less effectives then a specialized ship. 1# Venator Your carrier but can also fill the role as a capital ship if need be 2# Victory Your frontline combat ship but it's missile swarms can also screen fighters 3# Imperator Your command ship but can function as a heavy destroyer 4# Arquitens Your corvette hunter and harasser 5# Carrack Your gunship/fighter screener ( since it has 2 loadouts ) 6# Gladiator Your escort cruiser 7# Mandator Your dreadnought 8# Praetor Your battleship 9# C70 Your corvette and fighter screener 10# Acclamator Invasion/landing ship but can function as a heavy cruiser and fire support ship. Put them together in a combined fleet and your have a very effective and efficient fighting force. All in all the Republics naval doctrine was pretty solid and if you take all the ships above and put them together in a fleet you'd have a pretty solid fleet with no real notable weakness's. I'd also argue that the fighter craft of the republic make up for a lack of firepower given that that a large majority of the republics fightercraft were pretty heavily armed.

I disagree. The victory to me is like the Tiger II. Too heavy, too experience and way too late to make a difference in the greater scheme of things. Manpower in Star Wars is not an issue. Like with the Imperium of Mankind. That it never appears in Clone Wars tells a lot about its availability. If it had been availability in sufficient numbers, we would have seen it. As such I'd say it's the most capable out of all of the them. The Venator is a dedicated carrier that rarely saw combat equiped with a full compliment due to lacking numbers of pilots. Even with these bad prerequisites it managed to hold its own sufficiently, which was enough to buy the time needed to develop ships more suited to the war at hand. With the Arquitens we have a ship not meant to be deployed as a capital ship but rather as a screening vessel as part of a strike group. Leaving us with the Acclamator, which was a troop carrier equiped to be the jack of all trades. Serving as a capital ship wasn't it's role either. As such I think the Venator was the best serving ship for most of the Clone Wars. Not because it was the best ship available but because it was able to take up most of the brunt successfully enough to buy the time desperately needed. Even though it meant the death of millions of soldiers through oil the entire war. Which is more than acceptable in a galaxy wide conflict involving trillions of beings. It's the best because it worked well enough.

I think i'll always be disappointed that clone wars never showed acclamators more, especially in space battles, and that towards the shows end we didn't get an appearance of a victory class star destroyer. Didn't even need to be a thing, there could've just been a space battle and the camera pans and we see that the flagship is a victory class

I have a doubt, is the Star Wars galactic empire distributed in the Star Wars galaxy similar to the Imperium of Man from Warhammer 40K? The Galaxy is huge but the galactic empire only controls 2% of the habitable planets which is about 70 million planets out of 3.6 billion. this makes me doubt the galactic empire has several planets very distant from each other in each sector of the galaxy since it controls "very few" planets?

According to wookiepedia the Venatior could pack enough energy into it's turbolasers to equal the firepower of an ISD1 which combined with an airwing of almost 500 and decent shielding in a ship less than 2/3 the size should put it in the top spot.

The Republic Navy actually compliments each other very well. It may not be very diverse, but give a Republic fleet with these ships to Thrawn, and I bet he'd kiss you. The Acclimator can act as a troop transport and a destroyer. The Arquitens can act as a screen and fire support to the other three. The Venator can deploy starfighters in a defensive role to protect the other three against enemy starfighters while... Providing supporting fire for the Victories that, tbh are fairly light on crew compared to their imperial successor. On that note, they dish out all the damage being the backbone of the fleet while having the ability to operate alone. The same goes for the Acclimator.

“While I was in between some tasks, we used one of those Consular-class cruisers, one that wouldn’t be assumed to be a target in The grand scheme of the Navy. It seems like the light armament was a liability when we got attacked while I was getting transferred back to my unit in the 442nd after helping support with some odd wetwork in the middle of unknown space, collecting information about hyper space lanes near the unknown regions. These operations were actually pretty extensive, utilizing a large amount of probes as well as these ships. I don’t know how they found us, but they caught us off guard so fast, we weren’t particularly able to identify who attacked. Despite losing my arm, my eye, and half of my brain, they had me back in a month after I got a prosthetic arm, a prosthetic eye, a whole lot of bacta and some therapy, but things always felt weird after that. Every significant battle in Star Wars is decided by Starfighters. Battle of Naboo: decided by a single N1. Battle of Coruscant: decided by 2 Jedi Starfighters. Scarif: Y-Wings disable ISD. Yavin: Obvious Endor: A-Wing destroys Executer, others destroy Death Star II. Starkiller base: X-wings blow it up. Last Jedi: Single X-wing disables all the point defense on the dreadnought. Ties destroy both the hanger ans bridge of the Raddus. Exogul: Resistance force of mostly Starfighters destroys dozens of Xyston class. With that in mind you would be mad not to pick the Venator. In an era where most Starfighters dont have hyperdrives carriers are the king.

If you think about it, once the Victory Class was out, you'd have a solid core fleet. Acclimator's refit for from being transports at all to being heavy hitters that still have the speed to hit and run while Starfighters and Arquiten's ran escort on them, preventing them from being overwhelmed by any enemy ships fast enough to keep up with them, then the Starfighters stay behind to waylay and destroy some enemy craft before returning to home. And if the enemy tried anything to assault their Venator's, the Venator has some of the fastest sublight engines around and powerful hyperdrives so it can outrun a lot and get out of dodge when it needs to, not that it would with the Victory 1's you've kept in reserve due to their slower speed puppy guarding the home base for all those irritating Starfighters. This would have been a very bad day for even the best CIG fleets in my less then humble opinion.

Not sure I woulda put the Acclamator in the top spot as easily. Yes it has all the aforementioned- except firepower. 12 Quad Turbolasers are nothing to sneeze at yeah, but is far outstripped by even the Muunificent. The Venator was only as widely used because its 8 Heavy DBY-827 Turbolasers not only had punch but also longevity; meaning it is able to throw down continuous amounts of fire without burning up as quick. Not to mention it’s supported with its 2 Medium Turbolasers and AV-7 Broadside cannons. It may not be as armed as the Victory (which would have been number 1 for me) but it was far more armed than the Acclamator with just the Heavy Turbolasers. And it’s weakness is only a weakness when the shields go down. Otherwise, the Ventral hangar for launching fighters is fine.

Each ship has their own roles. Some were strictly battleships, and others were fighter-bomber carriers. HOW they were used though, is what we should be looking at. A lot of them were misused to hell and back. And comparing Cruisers to Super Carriers is a little unfair.

I'm still triggered by the fact that cruisers are smaller than destroyers. It doesn't make sense. It goes from destroyer, cruiser, and then battleship. Destroyers are supposed to escort other vessels in real navy, I can't understand how star wars messed this up.

Tbh, Victory was a good start at better, legitimate ship-to-ship Star Destroyers. And the Acclamator was easily refitted if needed, so even if the base design doesn't have fighters, they have Venators for that specific reason.
@andreykuzmin43552 жыл бұрын
I just have noticed after watching your video, that every capital ship of late Republic era had some serious flaw. Acclamator was a bit weak in broadside and could not carry starfighters without a dedicated refit. Venator relied too much on starfighters and again, had a weak broadsidd and added vulnerability of giant hangar. Arquitens was an obvious wartime refit/improvement on Consular class. Victories were well-armed, but ponderous. It made me think: did Palpatine had intentionally ordered ships, that would quickly becone obsolete to 1) lessen their effectiveness in hands of any would-be rebels, 2) fascilitate development of Imperator and other "Tarkin doctrine"-compliant ships for keeping systems in line, 3) make various ship types dependabt on each other for optimal perfomance, safeguarding Empire from mutiny within the Navy Zaarin-style?

Okay, I’ll admit my hate for the Victory Star Destroyers is due to how they seem more Imperial than Republic to me as well as the fact in Disney Canon, crews of the Victory 1 ships called them unlucky vessels and coffin ships since they were rushed out into service. Still, I feel it would have been wrong for the Victory to be the “best” Republic warship because if anything, it was more of an Imperial ship. The whole outer design looks so much like the Imperial Star Destroyers that came afterwards. I guess I see the Victory destroyers as being the bridge between the Republic and Imperial navies. Sure, the latter had a few Venators and Acclamators left while the Arquitens were remodeled as we see in Rebels, but at least they don’t feel lifeless and scary. The Victory on the other hand though just screams Imperial.

Few issues- First off, I think you might be overestimating the combat abilities of the Acclimator. All the lore I’ve ever seen indicates that it was only good in direct combat with some specialized refits, and without that it was highly vulnerable in capital ship combat. Second I think the Victory 2 only came out after the Empire
@Norrikan2 жыл бұрын
The Venator really shines brightest when it can just hang back and fart out a gorillion starfighters, but the fact that it could operate in multiple other roles with a substantial degree of competency is a point in its favor rather than against it. As for the Arquitens, there is something to be said about a speedy interdiction ship that can keep fighting way after most other light vessels have been knocked out of commission. Yes, it is undergunned, but it wasn't going to brawl with a Providence anyway - it's weaponry is perfectly fine for protecting a Venator by shredding bombers, corvettes and the like.

>completely ignoring the Arquitens it's way more versatile the the Acclamator, it's only shortfall is that is not a capital ship, but it is an excellent light cruiser even in canon, it was modified to make it more sensible, putting an actual hangar in it though with a bit of remodeling you can easy turn it a combat monster, put proton torpedoes into the hole in the prow, remove the quad laser cannons and add point defense, add 2 ion cannon batteries, one top, one under and maybe put in a slightly larger reactor and better hyperdrive in it, and now you have a cruiser that can pick it's engagements as it wants, punch beyond it's weight-class, and still barely cost anything on the other hand you can allocate hull space to hangars and crewspace, and probably have it be the base of operations for a strike team, like clone commando squads if I had to pick one ship from sw I would pick the Arquitens, it's just way better utility and less maintenance and upkeep than the larger ships

The acclamator's slightly OP, but a lot of times they needed jedi escort/some form of escort vessels, as during the battle of geonosis the very venator carrying hundreds, if not thousands of jedi including master yoda, planetside was ambushed by separatist missile frigates and unending swarms of geonosian starfighters, requiring the heavy escort of adi gallia and her apprentice siri tachi. Sometimes, the venator can be quite defenseless and helpless, unable to hold it's own. And, despite it's strengths it also had it's crippling weaknesses. Such as being shelled by seperatist HAG mortar tanks during the battle of thule, the acclamator could barely take that much abuse even from ground units.

I feel that each of these ships weren't meant to fight alone, kinda like modern real life ships, each ship serves a prepose, and when put together, they form one of the best fighting group, the Victory being the equivalent of a battleship, the Venator a carrier, the Acclamator a troop transport, and the Arquitens a Cruiser, the ships are used in those roles fairly often as well on screen, just that the Victory-class hadn't been really concepted, so they had to use the Venator for that.

Definitely the Venator. Tough enough to kill smaller warships or hold its own if caught off guard, enough troop capacity for smaller ground operations. The fighter/bomber capacity gives it amazing offensive or defensive potential in conjunction with its heavy weapons. Efficient layout with the twin bridge design to split workload and the crew requirements are not high all things considered. Its one weakness being its open deck when deploying fighters is easily mitigated. Being used incorrectly should not reflect on the design and if anything that the fact it was used incorrectly and didn’t flounder shows its versatility.
@0th_Law2 жыл бұрын
When you can field dozens of squadrons of Protorp-carrying, hyperdrive-equipped starfighters, having incredible firepower is... irrelevant. A Venator doesn't need armor or weapons. It doesn't even need to be in the same _system_ as enemy warships to inflict massive casualties.

i agree that the venator got way to many weakspots to earn 1st or even 2nd on this list. but when it comes to crew requirements, i could not imagine what 7000 people would be needed for. if the pilots for the fighters as well as the maintenance crew would be part of the 7000, then OK!, that would explain it. if i had to rework the ship: i would remove the large hangar in the front and with that the weakspot. looking at its size of ~1150 meters (~0.7 miles), this ship is large enough that hangar in the back could also house several hundred fighters, enough to be classified as a carrier. the space of the former front hangar could be used for more generators, shielding, storage and crew compartments. you could modify it to whatever you need it to be with this much space, really. on the exterior, extra armor plates and TONS of weapons. a centerline of heavy weapons, not just on top but also its belly (i hate that star wars ships NEVER seem to have much down there), as well as one or 2 heavy batteries on each blade left and right of the centerline, combined with 3 to 5 AA batteries. now you got yourself a frontline brawler with a high fighter capacity and decent transport capacity, allowing it to work far from home for a long time without the need to restock on anything. you could basically use them as a fleet in battle or independently as raid ships, kinda like the german submarines in WW2. for that you use some long distance fighters to scout the area for targets, before quickly moving in the the venators class 1 hyperdrive, wrecking everything with the now superior firepower and its large compliment of fighters, before making for a fast escape.
