It's that time of year again, when speckled trout, redfish, flounder and even bass all across the coast are gobbling anything in the water that even resembles a shrimp. Wise anglers will always leave the dock with at least one artificial shrimp rigged on one of their rods.
But, of course, some plastic shrimp are better than others.
To determine how "shrimpy" they look in the water, we visited a neighborhood pool with an underwater camera.
Check out the video to see which lures shined.

i have used some of the lures you have presented, and it really strikes me as weird that almost every lure falls on its side, something i dont remember seing when i have used them, i wonder why is that happening, also, we have to take in to consideration for "fall rate" that all these are salt water lures and salt water is more dense and these lures would be more bouyant in the ocean than they are showing in a pool.

Thought the same thing, I fish the DOA a lot and to me it always seems to fall vertically, especially with a little bit of current.

Well done, and I have to say, I’ve always appreciated the transparency with you and your sponsors. That’s rare.. Ive really done well on the savage gear lately and it’s probably my all time favorite, but it really hurts the gut and the wallet when you lose one or it gets worn out by toothy fish. The DOA has often been unstoppable for me on a semi-slack drift or swing when nothing else will get bit. I’m about to pick up some of the matrix shrimps right now haha. They have a real savage gear feel without the steep price tag. Thanks for another informative pool test

Andy I know this video is specifically for shrimp lures without a cork, but for what my 2 cents are worth, the ez shrimpz work really well under corks. The location of the hook eye and the way it’s balanced with the elaztech causes it to hover at the perfect angle. I’ve never gotten bit free lining one though…
@rmorris75252

@@bradleystokes3277 I’m that ways with the Vudu shrimp, love under a popping cork, but free lining I prefer the DOA. Some shrimp just perform better under corks.

Todd I’ve fished and fished those vudu shrimp on my end and I’ve never caught much of anything with them. I like to keep my baits local but we mostly use down south lures for trout on big lake. And matrix for reds. Just can’t get the fish to get on the plastic shrimps.

Curious if you used a loop knot or a snugged one? Either way would love to see a video comparing the two ways to rig with some of these baits. As you know it makes a big difference and most people don't realize it. Might hinder or help the movement of some of these baits. Just an idea since, I don't have a pool 🤣

Love the pool tests. Did you use a loop knot on these baits?
@MarshManMasson
@MarshManMasson 2 жыл бұрын
No. I know others feel differently, but loop knots are terribly overrated in my view. They definitely have applications -- like when fishing a crappie jig under a cork -- but I don't think a loop knot would have made a bit of difference in this test. Also, loop knots are weaker than palomars and improved clinches
@mikelocke1620
@mikelocke1620 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarshManMasson I would be interested in a loop knot versus snug knot pool test, ignoring knot strength and concentrating on lure action. Maybe a couple of shrimp lures and jig heads.
@willwilliams2944
@willwilliams2944 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarshManMasson I agree with @Mike Locke as you can see with my first comment. Yes it does have its uses like with a rattle or a jerk as you'll pull it straight with a snug not instead of it having the side to side action that it should have. I'm curious if it has the same effect on these lures or if like you said it is over-rated to be tieing when using shrimp or even paddle tails. I'm not concerned at all with strength since we are dealing with specks that are less than 10lbs. You don't see people using high lb braid for the same reason. I've personally reeled in 30lb and 40lb fish with loops and have seen people reel in way higher than that. If you would like to I would love to see you put knot strength to the test also though. Add dead weight till the knot fails. There are plenty of different slack tied knots other than just a loop knot, unless you were just grouping them together, but I do still have to agree with you that most snug knots are more durable.

Thanks for the test. I wish you had ranked them by performance only (without the cost factor). I guess the Savage Gear wins.
@MarshManMasson
@MarshManMasson 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, price isn't a performance element, but it's really important to a lot of people, so it has to be figured into the equation. A bait that looks great but is a 1/4 of the price of one that looks slightly better is a more desirable option for many anglers.
@willwilliams2944
@willwilliams2944 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarshManMasson Where is the durability factor then? I know alot of people that fish Vudu just because of the nylon mesh that they use. You don't have to waste time re rigging especially when your worried about the bite stopping. Gotta get that lure wet quickly and when the shrimp slides a foot up your line or is just a head that can be alot of valuable time lost. I don't think any of these lures had rattles, so not gonna even ask about that.
