I have to say Ozzy's and Yes albums. Both give the listener what they are looking for in a classic album. A personal opinion but I stand on that.

Hi Michael, if I take the last three years I chose the last Lindsey Buckingham,midnight oil 's "resist" and....yes...abba's "voyage"...none of these albums have the (bad) tricks of a modern production ... it's only about the craft...strong melodies...no weak track ( in my opinion) ...great lyrics...great voices ,in the end I just wanna listen to them again

Billy Sherwood was the vocalist/Basist for the band WORLD TRADE. Jay Schellen was the 2nd Drummer of the same band. So they are used to work together as a rhythm section. Jon Davison's voice sounds more comfortable as the YES lead vocalist than on the 2 previous albums. The vocal parts are shared between Davison, Sherwood and Steve Howe. The songwriting arrangement and Produktion is awesome. I never thought the guys were able to pull out such a strong Album with no founding memmber and only 2 classic members. 2? Howe and Downes! The so called vlassic Phase of YES lastet from 1968 to 1981. The Fish announced the breakup of YES in 1981. Billy Sherwood was a close friend of The Fish (Chris Sqiure) and he worked with him and YES as well in the past (since 1990). MIRROR TO THE SKY sounds and feels like a true YES Album to me. Kindly regards, Boris.

When RökFlute was out... B-sides from The Zealot Gene? Only Ian Anderson as a somewhat classic member? I thought it was going to be average at best.. Though I really like it. I think it does rock harder than some of their later releases and the flute-playing is as good as ever. That is probably the one I be listening to in the future to come!

I'm going to throw a curveball here and mention a release from late 2020 and it's ACDC's Power Up. It's possibly one of ACDC's best releases. It's completely ACDC classic rock and what seems to have inspired this burst of energy from Angus Young was the death of his brother Malcolm in 2017. The album is like something from the 1970's dragged into the future as a reminder of how amazing hard rock can be when it's done correctly. It is definitely something that will be remembered and played in 10, 20, 50 years time. I'm struggling to think of another artist why has been able to pull off a musical stunt like this so successfully.

"Metal"? if you think 72 seasons is Metal< you might wanna re-evaluate what you're calling "Metal". hard rock, yes. Metal? nope. they haven't been Metal for decades. hence why millennials have taking the Metal out of their name and just call them, "'Tallica".

Unquestionably it’s got to be “Mirror to the Sky” for me! I can’t get “All Connected” out of my head!!! I’ve got Steven Wilson’s “The Harmony Codex” on order. Ordered it on the strength of Hand.Cannot.Erase. I know what SW is capable of and I can hardly wait. I’m intrigued by Rock Flute (easier to refer to it by what seems to be the English translation). Have not heard either of the later two but they will have some heavy lifting to do to match the excellence of “Mirror”!

No original Yes members left in Yes! Steve Howe is definitely THE guitarist for their greatest stuff, but not the original guitarist. Peter Banks, who is also freaking amazing, was featured on their first two albums. Howe came on their third album, The Yes Album.
@shipsahoy1793 Жыл бұрын
Mike, Steve Howe has been around since “the yes album” so he’s practically an original member, but like him or not, he was always a better guitarist than he was rated by some.. except he can’t really sing, and most of the other guys that are in Yes now have been associated with the band for quite a few years now, so it’s not like any of them are green. Jay is the newest member, his first album with Yes as drummer and percussionist is Mirror .., but he has percussion credit on the Quest. And there has been time for him to do some touring with these guys..
@Thomasmemoryscentral Жыл бұрын
Can Steve Howe count enough as a classic member similar to Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones? Both joined years post original lineup but stayed active in the bands for decades

Thanks for acknowledging that Steve Howe is NOT an original founding member of Yes, and defining why you call him an original member. Even though none of the current line-up is original, they still sound pretty Yes like to me, but then again, I'm a Yeshole. I've enjoyed every incarnation of Yes.

Will I listen 10 years from now? Hmmm…good question. Out of the batch of albums you’re presenting Mirror to the Sky does it for me. Maybe RokFlote as well. I have been enjoying both of those. Oddly the Yes album is one I shouldn’t like. I was a naysayer but…it’s a pretty good album. Stuff not on your list that I’ll probably listen to the Girl is Crying in Her Latte by Sparks. There are also albums from newer bands that I’ll probably still listen to. For example I’m liking a band called K’Mono and both of their albums. I can thank Scot Lade for that recommendation. And of course there are plenty of albums released in last 10 years that are definitely worthy of repeated listenings. 🤘😳🤘 Hoping all is well. ✌️

I have RokFlote stuck in my head. so many memorable songs and sections
@scottmcneely1927 Жыл бұрын
I actually thought Zealot Gene, from only a year before, was a better Tull album than Rokflote, but no, neither is an album for the ages. Rokflote is my pick of this list by default, because it's the only one of the five I've heard. I will be listening to that Yes album soon, though. The most outstanding album I've heard in the past year, though, is Lindsey Buckingham's self titled release. Every song on it is memorable, it's kind of lo fi, and it might very well be an album for the ages. If any from this year is.
@Baz63 Жыл бұрын
I suggest none. The reason is that, in general, artists best work is in their formative years and comparing each of these albums to earlier works suggest this is so. Ozzy's is just a corporate release with heavily treated vocals and cannot compare to his work with Sabbath. Jethro Tull's latest is okay but is 'samey' with little or no acoustic guitar work and is screaming out for Martin Barre's return. Yes's is quite good but compared to their 70's work i think not and no way are they as talented as the 'famous five' e.g. Downes compared to Wakeman. As for Metallica once you've heard one track then you've heard them all with little variation. It again suggests a dearth of ideas compared to the band's heyday. However i'm glad these bands are still releasing new music even if the material falls short compared to past glories. So in 10 years i suggest people who want to play music by these bands will more likely refer to their 'classic' period.

95% agree. There are a few exceptions of artists whose later work was some of their best and will have a lasting impact. Johnny Cash’s later work with Rick Rubin comes to mind. Bob Dylan also comes mind. His last album is a complete masterpiece.

I wish I could say I loved them. I like four songs on the Ozzy album, only inamorata on Metallica and the others I just don’t like or get at all. The Yes album would be decent I guess if Howe didn’t sing.

I never liked Jethro Tull. Here's a quick funny story: There was a magazine interview with Jimmy Page and I wanna say circa 1988 during Page's Outrider Tour. The subject got onto Tull and Jimmy says that during the mid 70's, Tull asked Jimmy what he should call his new Live album from the L.A. Forum. Jimmy suggested he entitle it "Bore 'Em at the Forum."
@hurdygurdyguy1 Жыл бұрын
Ozzy, sure…Yes, nope…Metallica, nope…Smashing Pumpkins, nope… Jethro Tull, nope… As for Yes the album is a ho hum toss away, doesn’t even hold a candle to Fly From Here (the original release, not Trevor Horn’s vanity re-recording )…it’s Sgt. Howe’s Owner of A Lonely Yes Cover Band

Hate to show my ignorance, but has Jon Anderson retired? He finally lost his voice?
@shipsahoy1793 Жыл бұрын
Mike, couple more things, Metallica was never very musical even when they were (almost) good back in their heyday; and as for Ian Anderson, the vocals are a little bit better on this last album, but I really haven’t enjoyed albums from Ian Anderson for over 15 years or so.. For these “Reincarnated Jethro Tull” outings, I think he almost has to use the Jethro Tull name to make the most money than using the solo name, that’s my take on it .. he prob should retire or if not just gig and avoid studio work. I have 20+ albums of Jethro Tull, so It’s not like I don’t enjoy the music, but he hasn’t been able to interest me with new material in about 15 years really. The worst was probably TAAB2.. the vocals ruined it for me..JT Christmas album and Rupi’s Dance solo albums are really his last two studio albums that I think are worthy from such a long term professional. Anything newer in time then those albums from 2003 I would have to say his best work in the last 20 years was Homo Erraticus. I think he put a lot of effort into that one.
