You know…when my fiancé passed. Randy’s niece whom he never met. (Kathy’s daughter, Jenna)reached out to me on Fb and sent a very nice message to me. Knowing how much her uncle meant to me. As his (no 1) fan :p It meant a lot. I have been attempting to play his music since I was 14 I’m now 30. I also knew that her family had to deal with Randy’s death. As a guitarist dealing with grief. it felt like Randy’s soul, through his family member, was consoling me in Lauren’s passing. What great people they were. I always wanted to play Dee for Delores whom Randy wrote the song for, but never got that chance.

I like how Randy's solid knowledge of music theory really showed in his riffs and solos. Like in this song in particular, how he plays off the concept that every major key has a relative minor. Randy Rhoads died in the plane crash the day before my birthday in 1982. I already knew who he was, along with Ozzy. I grew up in Metro Detroit, and my Uncle Mike played in a garage band with some of his buddies, and they played Rock. By the late 70's they had me turned onto Black Sabbath, Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who, The Stones, and others. Ozzy was, and still is my favorite, and Randy Rhoads in 1981-82 was my favorite guitar player. Since then I have seen Ozzy reunite with Black Sabbath in concert, I have seen Dio with Black Sabbath in concert, and have seen Ozzy solo in concert a number of times. My favorite Ozzy moment in concert was at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, March 28th 1992. The band played songs from the Randy Rhoads days and also songs from the "No More Tears" album they were supporting. The show was OFF THE RAILS, AMAZING! and at the end of the show, Ozzy invited the crowd up on stage...CRAZY! So me and my buddies crashed our way to the stage and made it up there with Ozzy and the band...IT WAS MAYHEM! I actually got to put my arm around Zakk Wylde for a second while he was playing. It was Awesome! but I wish it was Randy. R.I.P. Randy Rhoads, your guitar and music artistry and influence will last the test of time! thanks for the video again...I'll watch more.

When Randy announced he wanted out,he was neck deep in the Diary of A Madman tour, the album was a smashing hit, had already seen Lee and Bob get screwed from the royalties and get kicked out before the US tour of Blizzard,he probably didn't like THAT side of the business,Ozzy and Randy had a fistfight during a breakfast over this-his planning to leave-,Sharon had backed Randy into a corner and "REMINDED" him of his legal contract to stick around.. he agreed to do one live album and one studio and that was it... Later when he passed Kelly Garni says that Sharon flew to Cali. 24-48 hrs after Randy passed to change the contract to avoid paying his family the royalties he was due. The family took OzzyCo. to court and they backpedaled to move.......

Appreciate your analysis Phil. I’ve always been a fan of the late Randy Rhoads. Tasteful and passionate, he was succinct and deliberate, his rhythm and ability to enhance the others in the band were certainly rare. He truly expanded their musical style with his open mind and willingness to keep learning. I personally love his classical influence!

As humble as he was talented. He was a student willing to always learn more ... but a master guitarist to his fans and peers. Still gives me chills listening to his playing.

Out of all the proto-metal chops guitarists, Randy is my favorite. His harmonic choices just speak to me. The way he weaves in and out of standard blues guitar stuff and classical lines.. it’s just incredibly inventive for the time. And like all the greats, it’s emotive. Some chops guitarists it starts to sound like typing fast instead of music. But not his solos, always sounds like he’s fighting for every inch of that guitar and winning. Sad we didn’t get to hear more from him 💙

I also keep coming back to this Randy video. I think Randy was a guitar God and I love how Fil talks about him, giving him the praise he so deserved. He was leaving Ozzy to go play classical for a while. We will never know just what break throughs Randy was yet to make on guitar. So so sad he was taken so young. RIP Randy we love and miss you.

Could you imagine if Randy was alive today? He would've done things on the guitar we couldn't even dream of. He would of had his own guitar probably better then Les Paul.

You have GOTTA do the song DIARY OF A MADMAN! IMo it is his masterpiece, and criminally underrated. The amount of guitar work going on is amazing! The classical guitar work with the very subtle variations, the building of the song, the feel, building to the amazing solo, still brings shivers after all these years. I had my tickets in hand for that tour, which was my first big show, and he passed a month before.

Fil I just discovered your channel by accident a few weeks ago ( Jim Stafford ) watching Randy it's just so sad what loss , like Buddy Holly . I saw Randy one time and it was amazing. So so ... So ... Interesting to hear. That sounds like not a compliment but it truly is. Never a dull moment. My Face and Brain melted !!! I played classical violin as a child ( youth symphony orchestra) being trained in classical I automatically listen to all the parts BUT didn't realize it fully till your analysis . You point something out about the pieces or band and most times I go "yeah I heard that too" not always. The arrangements or just one instrument. You're a great student of music!!! Thank you

Man I was super young when Ozzy w/ Randy on guitars flooded the scene! I missed the first time they came through. But the second I heard they were coming back after their second album dropped I was on a mission! I secured the tickets and was counting down to the day! It was too be the third act with Foreigner as the headliners! Well I listened to the radio when it was announced there was an accident and Ozzy wasn’t performing due to Randy’s death from the plane crashing! It was so upsetting and everyone was in shock! The only thing I remember from that concert was being upset! I loved both albums and was getting to see a true master but his life was cut short by an absolute devastating accident! It’s still so tragic looking back! Thank you so much for covering this and explaining what I loved as a kid and still do!!!! Your cool beyond words Fil!!

Robert Messner Same here, man. I already had my ticket to the Diary of a Madman show (I was 12...first concert) when I heard about the crash. The school bully, straight out of reform school, came crashing into the school hallway and looked right at me, crying, and announced to everybody what had happened. Fuck I want to throw up just thinking about it.

Chris Gattman I was 16 and completely crushed. I knew there were others but I felt alone in my pain. I remember Pat Traverse took they’re place but even Foreigner did nothing fo my pain. I was mainly wanting to see Randy and then Ozzy second and the rest of the band. Even though there’s a ton of talent around Randy Rhodes I personally was going to see Randy. So when he died I was simply too depressed to enjoy any part of the concert. I can’t remember the other two bands but I think they were UFO and maybe Bryan Adams. It’s been a very long time!

What impresses me the most about Randy's playing was how every single part of his impressive technical vocabulary was always used so tastefully to express musically VALID ideas. No phrase, or run, or fill ever seemed to be out of place, or excessive, with all of those individual parts building towards a clear goal like a beautifully told story. A phenomenal player who we lost far far too soon.
