The problem with basic stats is just that they don't account for most factors that affect a football game, they don't provide the necessary context to really understand how good/bad a player is actually playing and why he's playing well or struggling, for example a striker can be as good as he wants, if he doesn't get service he'll struggle and basic stats won't tell you that.

I agree. As a guy that grew up a football fan that later dived into other sports (most major American sports), I can confidently say that football has the simplest and least in depth stat tracking out of all major sports. You can get a very strong idea of how good a basketball player or baseball player is by purely looking at numbers but that doesn't work as well for football. You really need to actually watch games to know how good certain players are.

There's something to be said about how a striker who is super reliant on service might not be as valuable though, which is a lot of people's criticisms of someone like Haaland. I don't think it's necessarily true, but it's easy to see why people prefer strikers, especially these days after the rise of inverted wingers with insane goal numbers, that can collect the ball deeper and make chances themselves.

I'm a eye test guy first & stats 2nd. Problem with stats is that it is easily misleading to the casual fan. Look at Lamine Yamal. His G/A isn't that crazy but you're a fool if you don't think he's Barca's best player or Spain's best player. His impact is clear as day to see on the eye that stats can't tell you. Then you have players like Bruno Fernandes who racks up G/A in his position. People argue he's KDB's level. But on the eye he's nowhere close and often a detriment to his team at times(Mostly see this at United). Stats can be a good indicator on a player who's performing well but you need to actually watch a full 90 minutes and see how they accumulate those stats Instead of Highlights. That's how I see indicate who's truly the best.

Those of which that were simply not avaliable when Pele was playing. Also from the stats you provided, you can only conclude that Lukaku, over his entire career, scored more goals for his country than Pele. That is it. You cannot even conclude who is a better goalscorer or finisher as you do not have the respective goals per 90 and xG over/underperformance stats to back it up.

If you ask me, it's not really about eye test vs stats, it's about how both are generally used badly to push a narrative. A lot of the "problems" with stats are people just ignoring how statistics actually work, like with Haaland missing big chances. If you used a stat like "big chance conversion rate" then suddenly he would look like one of the more efficient strikers again. If stats are used correctly they can tell you a lot. Not everything, but a lot. With the eye test yes people can usually overvalue style or aesthetics. It's great if a player has aesthetics, but it's way more important that they're impactful. An excellent football player can make the game look simple and their technique can go completely under the radar, even for people who watch a lot of ball.

Its not that football is behind in individual trophy awards. Its the fact that not everything in football is stats/trophies. A lot in football is subjective, like art. There is a huge emotional vs rational factor in the game. And also it depends on what culture you come from: in Brazil, Portugal, The Netherlands or Spain a football field is a dance floor, you need to deliver much more than just numbers (you need to entertain the people who pay your salaries and give them a show even if you loose the game). While in countries like Argentina, England or Chile the football pitch is a battle field you need to deliver more than just talent (you need to commit, run and win things). This is why here in Portugal we jokingly often say that CR7 is not portuguese anymore because of how he used to play vs how he plays and sees football in the last 10 years. Which version of him was better? I prefer OG Cristiano but its the recent one that made him Goat worthy. So the voters dont really have a solid common ground to make a fair avaliation of a player, and any common ground that can be established will always be unfair. As a coach my BO was Rodri, but as a football fan my BO was Vini.
