There's a reason why the golden goal rule was abolished. No team wanted to risk conceding a goal and losing the game, so it resulted in both teams shutting up shop and playing ultra-defensive football. It made watching extra-time completely unpalatable. When Canada played Mexico in the 2000 Gold Cup, Mexico hammered them for the entire game and then Canada went down the other end on a counter-attack and won the game with a GG. The funny thing is CONCACAF had pretty much the set the tournament up for Mexico to reach the final and when Canada got there instead, about 2000 people turned up in an empty LA Coliseum.

Even though the Champions League pedigree is still belong to the El Clasico rivals (Real Madrid and Barcelona), there are many Spanish clubs that had at least won the European club silverware in the past. Sevilla conquered the Europa League with 7 titles, as did Atletico Madrid with 3 Europa League titles and Villarreal in 2021. Valencia also played in 2 Champions League Finals, iirc. Don't forget that La Liga clubs had always won the European club competition finals, especially when they faced any Premier League clubs. I believe the last time La Liga clubs had actually lost the final was Alaves in 2001 UEFA Cup, when they lost by golden goal to Liverpool in a 9-goal drama.

@JobHans Agreed, but Madrid also lost 3 other finals during the European Cup era (not the Champions League since 1992), with Liverpool being the last case just 2 years before Aberdeen's own historic win. Barcelona won the first European Cup in 1992, which was the last season before being rebranded as the Champions League. However, they lost 2 European Cup Finals before.

@kryss2056 Lazio might be a serious contender in Europa League. Even though they got battered more recently by Inter Milan in Serie A, they are still remain unbeaten. Bilbao's challenge might be even bigger, especially when you see the fact their own home ground (San Mames) will host the Europa League Final on May. It will be a massive disaster for Bilbao if they failed to win the Europa League this season. I believe Sevilla might have a chance to win the Europa League in 2022, when that year's finale was held in Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, but they lost to West Ham United in Round of 16 after extra time. Sevilla won the Europa League the next year instead.

Nah man, the premier league has always been a better league top to bottom than la liga. The low end teams in the prem historically like the fulhams, the burnleys and the newcastles of the world were always better than the other leagues equivalents. Teams from la liga back in the day like levante and eibar would get relegated in the prem no question. La liga has always just been top heavy.

I think a possible theory is that there was a misconception within the English media and English football fans that they were the best squad of players when the other teams may have had better players or a better squad that just did not get as much hype and air time as the English players. I get a sense that they lived in a bubble and didn't take into account that other teams has just as good squads as them just without the publicity. Like they said they possibly overrated the Premier League and underrated the other leagues.

The problem with this conversation is that non english people keep saying English players are overhyped and not talented when that is simply not the case. The main reason England hasn't won any trophies since 66 is due to questionable managers and lack of cohesion and chemistry within the squad. Sometimes they've just been plain unlucky. And it's not like England are just dreadful at tournaments, they're the ONLY national team in world football to reach at least the quarter finals in every tournament they've participated in since 2018. People don't give the Netherlands this much flak for failing to win a tournament since 88. Personally under Tuchel I think England will get the job done at either the world cup or euro 2028.

Southgate is mostly hated because England played some atrocious football under him, he was so defensive and scared to attack, and the football was horrible to watch. Even though he went far in tournaments, he almost never actually beat a team who had better players than England, it was all games we should be winning because of the quality of our team. I feel like he actually made us worse than the sum of our parts and it was just individual talent getting us through. When we came up against better coached teams (Italy and Spain), we lost both times. Also what he did to Saka was crazy. Southgate himself knew how hard it affected him and hurt his career when he missed that pen, so making a 19 year old take that 5th pen when you had more experienced players like Grealish sitting out was cruel af. Luckily Saka had the mental strength to rebound but for many players that could have ruined their career before it really started.
