From 1996-1998, my husband and I self-contracted our new home. One day by mistake, my husband started painting the ceilings with gloss paint. When he realized his mistake, he immediately asked for my feedback before proceeding. Although the gloss paint is more expensive, I LOVED the results so we decided to paint ALL of the ceilings in our 3800 square ft. house with gloss paint. The rooms continue to be bright & beautiful and it is still one of my favorite decorating hacks. I can’t believe more people have never heard of this “trick!” HIGHLY recommended.

To clarify-- Our ceilings are 9ft. downstairs, with a vaulted ceiling in the kitchen and breakfast room. The ceilings upstairs (which tend to be darker anyway), are 8ft, except for the FROG, which has a 9ft. ceiling. The house has a (roughly) north-south exposure.

Thank you for this video. I have a log home with a wrap around porch that makes the interior look dark even with light colored interior paint. I'm going to give this a try.

I hope it helps. Big mirrors are great for bouncing light around a room too. And, I switched to “Daylight LED bulbs” to make the light in my dark rooms feel more natural. It helped. 😊

Thank you for the video. I've actually painted Satin on the ceiling in some rooms and it actually looks really nice. I also like flat, and eggshell, it just depends on the person's preferences and the space.

Hi, I was always told not to ever paint a ceiling in anything but flat paint. Here you debunked that myth! I have a very dark, small room & I’m going paint the ceiling in eggshell after seeing your video.😁

That rule must have been started by someone with popcorn ceilings. 😉 I used eggshell on 2 of my bathroom ceilings and my bedroom too. I always love the result. It definitely brightens small rooms. Another bonus, eggshell sheen wipes clean way easier than flat. Which strangely needs to be done more often than you’d think in a house with small boys. They are always throwing things up in the air around here. 👍👍

I've never liked flat on the ceilings because you can't clean bug poop off it lol, you will see every swipe with a cloth. But we have trouble painting eggshell on the ceilings without leaving some patterns from the roller. I'm wondering if it's from using paint that dries too quickly.

I like to let the ceiling paint dry, then just touch up any random spots with a duller sheen. There's always 1 or 2 that I miss with the roller. Painting over your head is harder than on walls. :)

That was what I noticed that areas that had been repaired look made the ceiling look more uniform and imperfection less noticiable

The eggshell in the ceiling is going to attract Your eye up I would have to see it in person but I think the flat white you always do your ceilings flat white hides imperfections even using an eggshell on the walls do you fix a lot of drywall a lot of spots that’s why I like using satin But I’ll use an eggshell high traffic room and satin everywhere else

Well you are wrong about using eggshell on popcorn ceilings because it’s actually awesome using eggshell on your popcorn ceiling especially if the popcorn is beginning to loose strength. It makes the popcorn look great and gives it some much needed stiffness. Try it and you will see. I recommend the Behr premium eggshell, it’s really bright white and beautiful on the ceiling. However mind you, if you have imperfections on your ceilings like repairs and all, don’t use eggshell, absolutely use flat as it hides those imperfections. With eggshell you will probably love your popcorn ceiling again. Lol

Most people would do semi gloss oh that molding and crown molding eggshell on walls . Flat on ceilings egshell on ceilings is fine I guess I don't see a problem with it . Iv seen homeowners that paint there walls with semi gloss and it works so hey to each his own

I agree, if you have an ugly texture, you should use flat. But, in every room I’ve used Eggshell on, it 100% improves the room. Whenever I see beautiful ceilings out and about, they’re never flat. Most ceilings don’t have imperfections anyway. Just my opinion. Everyone can decide for themselves. 👍

Ok the one room has A lot of recessed lights it all looks really good but I will definitely keep my ceiling slack you see in the one picture although light hitting it it’s just too much shine

The ceilings were flat for years before I made the switch to Eggshell. Eggshell on the ceilings has always improved the whole look of the room. But, I have tons of crown molding and ceiling trim in these rooms. So, I want the ceiling to stand out. Like I said in the video, if you don’t like your ceiling texture, stick with flat. Everyone should go with whichever look they like best. 👍
